Surface karst geomorphology in the Jahani salt extrusion, Zagros Mountains, Iran

    Get PDF
This work analyses the superlative salt karst developed on Jahani salt extrusion (ca. 70 km2, 900 m in local relief). This active diapir is expressed as a salt fountain comprising a summit dome above the feeding vent and laterally spreading salt glaciers (i.e., namakiers) moving at rates of the order of cm/yr. The salt extrusion hosts the first documented and mapped salt karst poljes, developed at the foot of the steep rock salt slopes of the summit dome by differential suballuvial dissolution and expansion by rim dissolution. A cartographic inventory of 6489 sinkholes has allowed to characterise morphometrically the differences between the juvenile and mature sinkhole landscapes developed in the proximal and distal sectors of a namakier, respectively. Sinkholes developed in the recently expelled salt at the proximal sector have an average length four times smaller (23 m versus 83 m) and a density three times higher (600 versus 200 sinkholes/km2), reflecting the variable impact of expansion and coalescence processes. The Firuzabad River has trimmed the northern namakier, generating a 6 km long and > 400 m high salt escarpment, likely the largest on Earth. The dynamics of the escarpment is governed by the antagonistic roles of salt flow and rapid erosion by fluvial undermining, rock falls and dissolutional removal of the rock salt debris, causing severe hydrochemical degradation of the river waters. Exceptional halite rimstones occur in a marginal stream largely fed by permanent brine springs

This study investigates the catalytic activity and time-on-stream stability of Ni catalysts supported on CaZrO3, SrZrO3, and BaZrO3 perovskite oxides for the glycerol steam reforming (GSR) reaction, which aims to convert the crude glycerol obtained from the transesterification of vegetable and microalgae oils (during bio-diesel production) into hydrogen gas. We employed XRD, N2 physisorption, H2-TPR, H2 pulse chemisorption, CO2-TPD, Raman, TPO, and TEM/HAADF-STEM to examine the surface and bulk properties of the catalysts before and after the reaction. Regarding catalytic activity evaluation, the Ni catalysts supported on CaZrO3 and SrZrO3 can effectively eliminate all liquid products (acetol, acetone, allyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid) at reaction temperatures higher than 500 °C, converting all glycerol to gaseous products (>6 mol H2/mol of glycerol for the best performing Ni/SrZrO3). This is due to a higher Ni dispersion, increased availability of active sites for the dissociation of C3H8O and H2O molecules, and a more favorable and stronger Ni-support interaction. Notably, the activity of Ni supported on SrZrO3 is among the highest reported in the literature. Furthermore, due to its unique Ni-support interaction, the Ni catalyst supported on SrZrO3 demonstrated remarkable catalytic stability. Apparently, some Ni2+ cations are solubilized into the perovskite lattice following high-temperature calcination. After being incorporated into the perovskite lattice, these cations then migrate to the surface via the exsolution process upon high-temperature reduction. During the glycerol steam reforming reaction, this helps prevent carbon growth on the exposed metallic Ni surface, thereby prolonging the catalyst lifetime and ensuring reliable H2 production during long-term operation and under harsh reaction conditions

New analytic representations of the Lerch transcendent

    Get PDF
We consider an integral representation of the Lerch transcendent function (z, s, a) of the form (z, s, a) = 1 0h(t, z)g(t, s, a)dt, and two different analytical methods for the approximation of this integral transform to obtain new convergent expansions of the Lerch transcendent in the variable z. The first method uses multi-point Taylor expansions of h(t, z) at certain appropriately selected base points that provides convergent expansions of the Lerch transcendent in terms of elementary functions of z uniformly valid in compact sets of the complex z−plane. The second method expands g(t, s, a) in a Taylor series at a selected point in [0, 1] giving a uniform convergent expansion of (z, s, a) in terms of elementary functions of z valid in a large unbounded region of the complex plane. We provide explicit and/or recursive algorithms for the computation of the coefficients of the expansions. Numerical experiments illustrate the accuracy of the new approximations

Epidemiology and factors associated with the perioperative course of patients undergoing hip fracture during the initial phase of the state of emergency declared in 2020

IntroductionCurrently, there is no gold standard anesthetic plan for elderly patients with hip fractures who must undergo surgery. The state of alarm during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic changed certain hospital paradigms, prompting an investigation into differences in anesthetic management and patient survival for hip fracture surgeries using gamma nail osteosynthesis in 2020 compared to 2019.Materials and methodsA historical cohort study was conducted to assess morbidity and mortality, with data obtained from anonymized medical records.ResultsStatistically significant differences were found, notably an increase in Body Mass Index during confinement. A statistically significant decrease in leukocyte and hemoglobin levels was observed after surgery. However, there were no statistically significant differences in mortality between 2019 and 2020. Patients who did not require vasoactive drugs during surgery to maintain blood pressure levels above 90/60 mmHg had a better survival rate.ConclusionDespite the reduction in postoperative hospital surveillance time, no increase in complications was found. This allowed for early patient reintegration into daily life, early functional rehabilitation, and the minimization of economic costs

Three new dinuclear complexes [CuCl(o‐van‐en)Ln(H2O)3 Cl]Cl·C2H6O (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3); H2(o‐van‐en) is the Schiff base formed by 2/1 condensation of o‐vanillin and ethylenediamine) were prepared in a single crystal form by the method of horizontal diffusion. The prepared complexes were characterized by chemical analyses and IR spectroscopy. The three complexes are isostructural and the Cu(II) is situated in the smaller cavities while the larger cavities accommodate larger Ln(III) atoms. The pentacoordination of the Cu(II) atoms is completed by a chlorido ligand in the apical position, while the octacoordination of the Ln(III) atoms is achieved by three additional aqua and one chlorido coligands. AC susceptibility studies have shown that complexes 2 and 3 exhibit field supported slow magnetic relaxation while complex 1 does not display AC activity

The language of evaluation and stance in crowdfunding project proposals

    Get PDF
Today, digital crowdfunding platforms allow researchers to increasingly use digital resources to reach and engage diversified audiences, making scientific content accessible to everyone. This paper explores how evaluation in text contributes information relevant to understanding how scientists use language to express their expert opinions of scientific research and their attitudes about the value of their projects. Starting from the compilation and analysis of a 50-science project corpus from Experiment.com, evaluative stance expressions in this work were classified according to Biber’s (2004) taxonomy into the following stance categories: verbs, adverbs, adjectives and nouns. Subsequently, genre analysis was applied to identify the discourse functions of these evaluative words in each rhetorical section of the project proposals. Results show that the analysed crowdfunding proposals are rich in stance verbs (52.65%) and, to a lesser extent, stance adjectives (23.52%), serving to express values of effort, improvement and diligence in the proposed projects, as well as judgement regarding experiments and ‘Lab Notes’ updates, respectively. This can be useful for both theoretical advancement and pedagogical purposes, that is, to apply scientists’ findings to digital communication teaching and learning

Abusive Head Trauma in Infants: A Case Review (2016-Present) and Prevention Strategies

    Get PDF

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease of uncertain etiology. Several drugs have been lin- ked to the development of sarcoidosis or systemic granulomatous reactions indistinguishable from this disease. We present the clinical case of a patient diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treat- ment with capecitabine who, after developing systemic and musculoskeletal symptoms, was ultimately diagnosed with capecitabine-induced sarcoidosis
