The Iterates of the Frank-Wolfe Algorithm May Not Converge

The Frank-Wolfe algorithm is a popular method for minimizing a smooth convex function f over a compact convex set C. While many convergence results have been derived in terms of function values, hardly nothing is known about the convergence behavior of the sequence of iterates (xt)t2N. Under the usual assumptions, we design several counterexamples to the convergence of (xt)t2N, where f is d-time continuously differentiable, d > 2, and f(xt) ---> minC f. Our counterexamples cover the cases of open-loop, closed-loop, and line-search step-size strategies. We do not assume misspecification of the linear minimization oracle and our results thus hold regardless of the points it returns, demonstrating the fundamental pathologies in the convergence behavior of (xt)t2N

Radicalization of Islam or Peddling Radicalism? Lessons from the French Experience

A simple game-theoretic model is used to end the sterile intellectual trench war between those who analyze each instance of a community’s radicalization process as a self-contained phenomenon and those who prefer to embed such episodes within a more encompassing social framework. In the model, two groups labeled “Islamic” and “Nativists” are competing using radicalization as a tool to enlarge their share of the limelight in the media. Exogenous shocks are then shown to entail both idiosyncratic responses and interactions between the two groups. The French “radicalized decade” 2011-2020, which witnessed both the Bataclan highly lethal Jihadist attack in 2015 and the populist gilets jaunes massive uprising from 2018 to the COVID-related lockdown in 2020, among other radicalization events, is used to put some of the model’s insight to work. A simple extension of the model is used to shed some light on the emerging Islamo-Leftist and Lefto-Populist tacit collusions, which suggest that the radical left is somehow breaking apart, thus probably boosting in fact the collective radicalization process

How landownership equality created a low wage society: pre-industrial Japan, 1600-1870

Despite its sophistication, Early Modern Japan, 1600-1868, had among the lowest real wage levels ever recorded, half of those in pre-industrial England. This paper resolves this puzzle by considering the more equal landownership distribution in Japan relative to Europe. Due to institutional differences in land transmission, most of the rural population were landless in England but only 16% in Japan circa 1800. Using a Malthusian model, I show landownership equality in Japan paradoxically generated lower wages and GDP per capita. This is due to the concavity in the positive income-fertility curve resulting in greater equality generating greater population pressures. I provide evidence of the mechanism at the cross-country level and at the individual level using Japanese village censuses. If, as many historians believe, high wages in western Europe explain the onset of the Industrial Revolution, then Japan’s failure to industrialize first could have been shaped by its unusual pre-industrial equality
