Regular Meeting May 13, 1948 president Hanson Presiding 45 Members Present Dean Tilberg reported the following from a study of the success ot Gettysburg students in graduate school based upon the total of 74 replies received to date. Gettysburg percentile 293. report of the Freshmen taking The request of the Interfraternity Council for deferred rushing was referred to the Scholastic Standing Committee with power to act. Reporting for the cur~iculum Committee, Dr. Waltemyer infor.med the Faculty that Biology 2 and 3 had been dropped from the Physical Education curriculum, that Sociology l and 4 semester hours of Fiµe Arts or appreciation courses had been added, and that Bible la, lb had been moved to the Sophomore year • ....--Reporting for the Discipline Committee, Dr. Glenn reported that PAUL s. BOVlMAN had been found guilty of cheating in a Greek A course on May 4, 1948 and had been given the following penaltys F in the course, 12 hours added to graduation requirements, and probation for the current and the next semester. i./ Dean Tilberg gave a detailed report on the practices of seven representative colleges in handling and penalizing ch~ating convictions. The usual penalty for a first offender is F in the course with suspension usual for second offenders. Penalties. given at Gettysburg are more severe than in ~ of the seven institutions studied• namely Oberlin, swarthmore, Wittenberg, Dickinson, Grove City, F and M, Muhlenberg, and Wooster. It is the opinion of the committe~ that cheating at Get't'Jsburg is at a minimum alld that most of the Faculty is diligent in supervising examinations. ~~ A short discussion followed concerning the signing of matriculatio~ a. i-:r "T c; cards• The thought was expressed that all new students should be assembled after the President's address in September for formal matriculation including the signing of an honor pledge. A thorough discussion of honor principles brought the following thoughts: l. The more serious students favor penalties severer than those now administered. 2. The honor system should be extended. 3. The Faculty should make its position on honesty clear to each class. 4. Honesty in work done outside of class should be encouraged. s. A group of 50 students have requested strict proctoring of e:xaminations. Following the discussi cn# the Faculty passed Prof. J.V&r.then' s motion _. ---..· that all flagrant cases -;of ' plagiarism and other forms of dishbnesty be turned over to the Discipline Committee for action. Proof of plagiarism or other flagrant forms of dishonesty must be furnished by the department or the individual reporting. -- .. · .. , 15

This minutes is available at The Cupola: Scholarship at Gettysburg College: https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/facultyminutes4748/5 Regular Meeting January a, 1948-President Hanson Presiding 49 Members Present President Hanson announced the appointment of the following committee on Faculty Hospitalization and Insurance: .Zeigler, Johnson and Rau. Dean Tilberg announced that the College ranked 78th out of the 575 colleges administering the American Council of Education Psychological Test to entering Freshmen. The Dean praised the work of the ten Freshman advisers who assisted their advisees not only in registration routine, but also in their problems during the semester. Upon the motion of Dr. Miller seconded by Dr. Smoke, .CONALD DIEHL, was granted permission to withdraw from the current semester with full credit. The reason for withdrawal was death in the family. The Dean announced the examination schedule for the first semester and requested that all F's be handed in early. The Registrar announced the registration dates for the second semester as J'anuary 14,15, and 16 and that examination questions could be duplicated -· for the Faculty. -; ) Dr. Fortenbaugh requested that departmental curricula be turned in to the Catalog Committee by the end of the semester so that the curricula could be edited and printed for use in Spring Registr~tion. The Discipline Committee announced that JOHN B. MORGAN .A!~D T~MAS &a ~AldM AGHEft had been convicted of cheating in a French A1examinatiori on De~ember 12 and that a penalty of F in the cour~e, 9 hours added to graduation requirements, and probation to June of 1948 had been imposed. Regular Meeting December 4, 1947 President Hanson Presiding Members Present Dr. Hanson announced that the January lecture would be "The Inside Story of Korea" by Keller Rockey and that the February lecture would be on Cancer Research. He likewise announced that the Board of Trustees had ap-proved the Pension Plan to go into effect immediately, that the interior of Science Hall would be painted, that the class rooms in Glatfelter Hall would. be soundproofed, and that the Expansion Fund Campaign was giving most encouraging results. Teachers in the northern end of Glatfelter reported that the bells were inadequate. The Faculty accepted the recommendation of the Scholastic Standing Com-mittee that no action be taken at this time to increase the quality point requirements for graduation. The Faculty approved the recommendation, effective June 1, 1948, that a quality point of 1.00 in the major subject be a requirement for graduation. The Discipline Cammi ttee reported that Richar~....nQ. had been found guilty of Cheating in an English test, and that the penalties of F in the course, 9 hours added to graduation requirements, and probation until June of 1948 had been imposed. The Committee pointed out the College recommendatfon that in crowded classes where it is impossible to seat students in alternate rows that alternate examinations be given. 6 _ ... .... ~ Professor Bilheimer announced that 88 seats had been reserved as a Faculty section at all home basketball games. This minutes is available at The Cupola: Scholarship at Gettysburg College: https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/facultyminutes4748/3 ... - -.t -" Regular Meeting November 11, 1947 President Hanson Presiding 41 Members Present After the minutes of the October meeting were read and approved, Dr. Hanson announced that the Pension Plan as modified by the Faculty and its committee had been received by the Board of Trustees Committee with no objections. After prolonged discussion, the Faculty granted the petition of the Student Body that the 1947 Thanksgiving Vacation begin at Noon, Wednesday, November 26 and end at 8:00 A.M •. Monday, December 1. The Faculty rejected the petition of the Interfraternity Council that no classes be held on the Saturdays of Interfraternity weeks. The Faculty accepted the "No Parking" plan as recommended by the Faculty-Student Committee and the Student Senate; namely, that there will be one-way traffic from the Lower College past the President's home, Glatfelter, and the Gymnasium, that all other roads be closed to automobiles, that parking be permitted only to the President, to cars in the two fraternity parking lots, and to visitors in designated areas beside Glatfelter Hall and the Gymnasium. Dean Tilberg asked the departments to check the latest WAA surplus list for items needed. Dr. Waltemyer suggested that a permanent committee of three be appointed to study the group insurance and hospitalization plans now in force and to keep the Faculty informed on changes in rules, rates, etc. \. The Registrar requested that all Courses of Instruction materials for the 1948 catalog be turned in within the next three weeks. The Scholastic Standing Committee promised a report on the quality point graduation requirement at the December meeting. Dr. Miller requested the cooperation of the faculty members in closing windows and turning off lights after classes. Dr. Saby suggested that hereafter the placing of posters and bulletins be confined to the bulletin boards. Dr. Sloat asked the professors to curb the careless ha.bits of smokers who create dangers of fires.
