Concrete block tracking in breakwater models
The protection of harbours in coastal areas, that are exposed to the action of the sea waves, is made by breakwaters. During the phase of design of new breakwaters or the rehabilitation of existing ones, the evaluation of effectiveness of the shape and of the protective elements to save the harbour, 3D scale models are built inside wave basins or wave flumes. In the testing phase, water waves are generated, and the resulting impact on the breakwater model is periodically evaluated to study the hydraulic and structural behaviour under predefined sea-wave conditions. This study proposes a methodology to estimate displacements of concrete blocks of the outer layer, also called protection layer, of rouble-mound breakwater models. These blocks are placed in the areas where it is expected that action of the waves is stronger. The combination between the 3D information of a point cloud survey and the visual information of a digital image is a key factor for estimate the spatial location of the geometric centre of the blocks. The location of a block centre point, at different instants, gives its spatial displacement. The equipment used for data acquisition tests were a Kinect V2 sensor and a digital camera, with which were obtained the main data sets for this work: RGB imagery and 3D Point Clouds. The data collected by this allowed the generation of point clouds (X, Y and Z) and orthomosaics, both fundamental for the determination of displacements of the blocks. Indeed, displacements detection results from the determination of the spatial coordinates of the several locations of the Geometric Centre of each block, which is in fact the main outcome of this study. It is expected to serve as a contribution to the laboratory teams working at the Harbours and Maritime Structures Division of the Department of Hydraulics and Environment.12pComunicação de acesso livre na InternetDBB/NG
Regular and irregular wave propagation analysis in a flume with numerical beach using a Navier-Stokes based model
This paper describes the analysis of the propagation of regular and irregular waves in a flume by using Fluent® model, which is based on the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations and employs the finite volume method and the Volume of Fluid (VoF) technique to deal with two-phase flows (air and water). At the end of the flume, a numerical beach is used to suppress wave reflections. The methodology consists of adding a damping sink term to the momentum equation. In this study, this term is calibrated for three cases of regular incident waves (H = 1 m, T = 5, 7.5, and 12 s) by varying the linear and quadratic damping coefficients of the formulation. In general, while lower values of damping coefficients cause residuals on the free surface elevation due to wave interactions with the outlet boundary, reflection occurs on the numerical beach when higher values are used. A range of optimal damping coefficients are found considering one of them null. In one of these cases, temporal series of free surface elevation are compared with theoretical ones and very good agreement is reached. Afterwards, an irregular wave propagation, characterized by a JONSWAP spectrum, is investigated. Several gauges along the flume are evaluated and good agreement between the spectrum obtained numerically and the ones imposed at beginning of the flume is verified. This study shows the capacity of NS models, such as Fluent®, to simulate adequately regular and irregular wave propagations in a flume with numerical beach to avoid reflections.81-90ppVolume 372DHA/NPEDefect and Diffusion Foru
The BINGO project Work Package 5 envisages the understanding and improving of the decision making process at the individual, societal and institutional levels to cope with the expected impacts of climate change at six European research sites. The initial input of this work is based on interviews at each research site using the three-layer model questionnaire on water policy and governance from the Water Governance Centre – Content, Institutional and Relational layers. The purpose of this document is to describe the interviewing process, based on this questionnaire, of some members of the Portuguese community and of some relevant personalities, in order to provide the context of the Portuguese research site features and institutional framework. It aims at facilitating the BINGO partners understanding of the answers received and summarizing the main conclusions. For this purpose, the answers received are exhaustively analysed and the main issues regarding water resources management in Portugal are identified. The conclusions are presented according to the three-layer questionnaire on water resources governance and climate change risk management.
This report starts by presenting the framework of BINGO and, in particular, the objectives and activities regarding Work Package 5. It contains a brief reference to the three-layer model of policy and governance questionnaire, allowing a better understanding of its content. The findings and recommendations, to be discussed with the relevant stakeholders, are presented in chapter 3. The key conclusions are presented in the last chapter. Those will be the basis for the recommendations for improvement to be provided in the future by the BINGO project.Bingo project – Bringing INnovation to onGOing water management – a better future under climate change / CONFIDENCIALDHA/NR

The importance of technological knowledge for the valorization of azulejo heritage
In this article considerations regarding the importance of recovering and protecting the knowledge of tile production techniques are elaborated. An overview of the Portuguese tile production system is made. The intangible method of knowledge transfer through oral dissemination and learning “by observing and executing/imitating” is observed. A comparison is made with the dutch case, where a larger amount of tangible historic information exists – namely technical treatises and potter’s books - describing the materials, recipes and techniques used for historical tile production. The preservation of this knowledge has allowed potteries (such as Makkum and Harlingen) to continue to use similar raw materials and techniques. This has highlighted the need to create sources of information to contribute to historical information regarding Portuguese tile production techniques. The physicochemical characterization of tiles enables us to draw information about raw materials and production methods. The possibility of gathering of information from contemporary tile artisans-artist has also been suggested, namely from factories that are still functioning or that have functioned in the past. Above all, the article will explore the technical knowledge of tile production as an important intangible cultural value in the construction/development of Azulejo as Heritage.55-66ppRNI 100DM/NBPCProceedings IMaTTe2017- Intangibility Matters - International conference on the values of tangible heritag
