Understanding how software project managers learn using kolb's learning style inventory

    No full text
Teaching project managers involves conveying complex concepts in an accessible manner while fostering strategic thinking and promoting problem-solving skills using specific methodologies. Additionally, continuing education requires techniques for meaningful learning that balance theory with practice and build upon professional experience. However, unlike other software development roles, little is understood about how software project managers (SPMs) can learn effectively. Therefore, this research aimed to identify teaching techniques that better align with SPMs' learning styles. Kolb's learning styles test was administered to 27 project managers to determine their preferences in this regard. The surveyed SPMs leaned towards abstract conceptualization, exhibiting a balance between active experimentation and reflective observation, with the thinking style best reflecting these preferences. Building on this, some SPM-centered teaching guides were adapted from existing knowledge on teaching professionals with Kolb's thinking learning style.

    No full text
Mining operations are the most important industrial activity in the northern regions of Chile with a high use of fossil fuels. This paper develops a techno-economic assessment of a green hydrogen complex designed to supply fuel to stationary diesel electric generators (small-scale project) and fuels cells trucks (medium-scale project) for a company dedicated to exploiting stone materials for the mining sector. The hydrogen complex consists of a photovoltaic plant, electrolyzers, hydrogen compressors and storage, considering geographical location, solar resource and company layout. The economic assessment considers the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), including investment and sensitivity analysis. For the small-scale project, a 60-kW photovoltaic plant installed in an area of 1000 m2, with an investment of US69,000,resultsinanaverageLCOHof4.88US 69,000, results in an average LCOH of 4.88 US. However, the NPV is -47,645andtheIRRis2247,645 and the IRR is −22%, indicating that this project is not viable. For the medium-scale project, a 1700-kW photovoltaic plant installed in an area of 28,000 m2, with an investment of US 2,100,000, results in an average LCOH of 4.62 US$. The results indicate feasibility, economic convenience, and scalability, marking this project as a precursor for future initiatives in the Chilean mining sector

Writing High-Quality Case Studies in Sport Science

    No full text
Sport-physiology and -performance research often relies on group designs that compare experimental and control groups and/or preintervention and postintervention results. This commentary highlights the key elements of a high-quality case study and provides clear guidelines for readers and authors of the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance. We propose 4 essential components. First, case studies should offer relevant and original insights by tackling novel issues and defining a clear purpose. Second, they must employ rigorous methodology, encompassing careful participant selection, comprehensive data collection from diverse sources (eg, interviews, surveys, physiological tests, training diaries, competition data), and deliberate data analysis that explicitly addresses factors influencing performance changes. Third, they should be well structured and engagingly presented to reach both academic and practical audiences. Finally, bridging the science–practice gap is vital, requiring and strengthening collaboration between researchers and practitioners to enable data-driven decision making and spark new hypotheses. Conclusions: Although case studies traditionally rank low in the research evidence hierarchy, high-quality examples can significantly bridge the gap between research and practice. By working closely with the sporting community and strategically sharing findings, case studies can enhance evidence-based training strategies and amplify the real-world impact of sport science

In the first decades of this century, alternative media have firmly established themselves thanks to the transformation of the media ecosystem made possible by the massification of the Internet and social media platforms. From a peripheral position, these media differ from the traditional press, which tends to report almost exclusively on the issues that interest the elites and their authoritarian voices, which is even more pronounced in Latin America. A comparative and critical qualitative analysis of the information published by two Chilean alternative media with opposing ideological positions - El Líbero (right) and El Ciudadano (left) - in August 2024, a period before the elections, was carried out to examine their predominant thematic agendas, the use of sources and the quality of information. The results clearly show distinct thematic agendas and the use of sources based on their ideological positions, as well as opposing frames. In both media, the origin of many sources is not clearly identifiable, there are no verification filters, only one or no live source is used in two thirds of the publications and opinions are used in informative texts, which affects the quality of the information

Baseline body fat percentage is associated to weight and fat mass gain from high-fat overfeeding over 8 weeks

Background & aims: Epidemiological data suggest that participants with lower vs. higher body mass index (BMI) resist exposure to the obesogenic environment. To test this, we analyzed the relationship between overfeeding-induced weight and fat mass gains with baseline BMI and body fat percentage. Methods: In this controlled intervention study, 34 men (age: 26±5 y old; BMI: 25.5±2.4 kg/m2, body fat [DXA]: 19.3±5.1%) consumed for 8 weeks 40% more energy than needed at weight maintenance. The energy costs of weight and fat mass gain were calculated as the 8-week excess energy consumed divided by weight or fat mass gain. Energy expenditure (baseline and after overfeeding) was determined using a metabolic chamber and doubly labeled water. Transcriptomic analysis was conducted from abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue samples. Results: Body weight increased 7.2±2.1 kg and fat mass 4.0±1.4 kg. There was no statistical association between baseline BMI and weight and fat mass gains. However, baseline body fat percentage was significantly associated with weight (r=0.57) and fat mass (r=0.59) gains. Body fat percentage was also statistically associated with energy cost of weight (r=-0.38) and fat mass (r=-0.40) gains. Metabolic adaptation in energy expenditure (adaptive thermogenesis) was unrelated to the energy cost of weight and fat mass gains. Transcriptomics analysis showed that high energy cost of weight gain was associated with up-regulation of inflammation-related pathways. Conclusion: Body fat percentage at baseline was inversely associated with overfeeding-induced weight and fat gain resistance. The underlying compensatory response appears unrelated to changes in energy expenditure

Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is a key construct that emerges as distinct from both pedagogical and disciplinary knowledge, essential for understanding how teacher training should be structured. Since its genesis, it has been the subject of thousands of studies, and although there are reviews within each disciplinary PCK area (e.g., PCK in mathematics), there are no bibliometric analyses that allow for the recognition of trends and gaps in productivity in the field of teaching in general. The aim of the present study was to identify such patterns through a review of high-impact specialized journals. For this purpose, 1,942 Web of Science articles were analyzed with various bibliometric parameters and digital visualization software. The results show a series of trends not described in previous literature. The implications for research on teacher training are discussed, considering the initial intent behind the construct's formulation and its relevance to contemporary educational challenges, and new lines of research are proposed

    No full text
The main objective of this study was to carry out the cross-cultural adaptation of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives - MAIN, a narrative assessment instrument available in several languages, to Chilean Spanish. The adaptation process involved six stages: direct translation, synthesis, back-translation, revision and preliminary version, piloting, final report and presentation to the committee of experts. The adaptation paid special attention to lexical, grammatical, and cultural aspects to ensure the comprehension and familiarity of the instrument in the everyday context of Chilean children, without compromising the original structure and format of the test. In line with previous studies in other languages, the results of the pilot test revealed an increase in performance in the narrative production categories with the age of children from 4 to 7 years. Regarding comprehension, an improvement with age was observed, reaching a peak around 6 years of age. These findings are consistent with previous research conducted with the MAIN. The availability of a tool adapted to different languages facilitates the comparison and exchange of data between professionals and researchers from a range of linguistic and cultural contexts. This work also promotes the adaptation of the MAIN to other languages spoken in Ibero-America, opening up the possibility of assessing language combinations that are not usually assessed
