Key lifelong competences: exploring EFL teachers’ perceptions and challenges in Greek state schools
The study aims to explore the familiarity of EFL teachers with the concept of key lifelong competences and examines their preparedness in integrating them in their classes in Greek schools.
Quantitative research was carried out using a questionnaire (N=95) comprising in total 15 questions and exploring aspects such as the EFL teachers’ perceptions of the FL curriculum, their familiarity with the concept of key competences and their preparedness to integrate them in their teaching practice along with potential barriers they face and solutions in coping with them. The data from the questionnaire was processed using descriptive and inferential statistics and revealed that almost half of the teachers are aware of the term competence and to a considerable extent prepared to integrate key competences in their teaching context. The EFL teachers are adequately aware of multilingual competence and are highly prepared to integrate it in their classes, given the distinct emphasis placed on multilingualism in Greece. On the contrary, competences such as entrepreneurship, and citizenship are the least known to teachers. It should be noted that the EFL teachers identify barriers in implementing all competences which indicates that focused training on promoting a gradual complete immersion of the entire educational system in the principles of key competences should be considered
Counter Terrorism, Sanctions and Humanitarian Access in COVID-19
This article will look at the impact of counterterrorism and sanctions measures on principled humanitarian action in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. It will also explore the daily operational challenges faced by humanitarian organizations as they carry out their work, as echoed in a growing body of research. This includes, though are not limited to, difficulties to the independent selection of beneficiaries, to carrying out bank transfers, to engagement with non-state armed groups and to the provision of healthcare to people in need in sanctioned jurisdictions.
The need to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought new urgency to these issues as pre-existing constraints in parts of the world, despite joint efforts undertaken by donors, can hinder the response.
In addition to, it will discuss the need to reaffirm the fundamental importance of the humanitarian principles and to ensure that counter-terrorism measures and sanctions do not weaken adherence to them. It will seek to identify ways to ensure that such measures are consistent with Member State obligations under International Humanitarian Law, ensuring people-centered solutions and strengthening effectiveness
Supporting the Wellbeing of Children with Special Needs through Strength Based Curriculum
Singapore’s Ministry of Social and Family Development’s definition of “persons with disability” are those with physical and mental impairments, therefore resulting in reduced opportunities towards a higher quality of life in terms of education, employment, and recreation (MSF, 2023). This identification of a disability is rooted on the affliction rather than the person. Mental health approaches have traditionally followed a linear deficit approach pathway as well, with the prescription that the termination of problems would in default result in a healthy state of mental health (Torres, 2021) and past policies and efforts were made to mitigate the affliction, in the view that the quality of life will improve in the absence of mental illness or the reduction of disability. Therefore, such endeavours on rehabilitation thrusts need to be revisited and revised, to accommodate the broader context children with special needs are part of. The present literature review seeks to explore the relationship of strength-based approaches on three variables, namely, self-esteem, self-concept and self-perception and its effect on overall well-being. These two variables were selected for two reasons. The first being their centrality to theories of positive psychology and have been long explored as indictors of wellbeing and scholastic levels (Baumeister, 2003). Second, these variables seem to have good predictable validity of self-views (Swann et al., 2007)
The Effect of learning resources on enrollment for higher education and career advancement in Kenya
The higher education space appears to have greatly evolved in the last two decades following a raft of reforms. Education and career growth are widely perceived to be intricately interlinked. Education leads to overall economic growth as well as increased income for the individuals. This has resulted to an increase in demand for higher education as individuals advance in their cognitive and social skills leading to development in human capital. However, the attainment of higher education is dependent on the quantity and quality of inputs which shape the outcomes. To address this gap, the paper examined the effect of learning resources on the pursuit of higher education and career advancement in Kenya. Career advancement increases individual’s competitiveness and translates to deliberate progression in work and socioeconomic growth. The paper is motivated by the human capital theory which associates higher education to increase in productivity of human beings through improved skills, the social cognitive career theory which explains self-efficacy and academic efficacy to individual economic development as well as the input output theory which in this context links the learning resources as inputs in higher education and the acquired academic knowledge which is an output to career advancement of primary school teachers. Findings from the study revealed the significant role played by the available learning resources. The study recommends that the MOE, TSC and education stakeholders, leverage on the findings from the study when making decision regarding higher education in relation to career advancement and growth
Research and Design of VR Based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Model and Database
In response to the application of drones in real life, drones are more susceptible to interference and influence from various external factors such as weather, site, airspace, etc. during flight operations or related tasks. Not only can they not guarantee the completion of expected goals or tasks, but they are also prone to problems such as falling, collision, or accidental injury caused by the unstable state of drones. The drone flight simulation, virtual training, and drone database system developed based on VR technology has improved the safety, diversity, and instability of drones in practical applications, and reduced the interference of external adverse factors on drone flight. A comprehensive drone model database system has been established. This provides effective guarantees for the application and implementation of drones in various fields
Analysis of the Kanban system in the warehouse of a maritime engine maintenance company
The machine control has always been a task, carried out exclusively by people who do not work directly on the production lines, so people directly involved in production do not need to worry about the materials needed for their work, and with this model there was difficulty when product supply. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify benefits and results in the application of the Kanban system in a marine engine maintenance company, in the warehouse sector, added to the selection of literature that conceptualized the mechanism of the system; the identification of the process, from the organization of maintenance parts, as a way to facilitate the maintenance of marine engines. The company studied, founded in 2014, headquartered in the city of Manaus/AM, specializes in marine engine maintenance, with machinery as its main sector. The company has vacancies ranging from 11 to 50 employees annually, according to demands and times of the year. The methodology addressed is of a mixed nature, being part bibliographical in order to select works for the basis and better understanding of the subject, and part case study, since the maritime maintenance company will be the focus of this article. The kanban system determines the quantity of supply so that bottlenecks do not occur with regard to the company\u27s production. Regarding the updating of the table, every day you should check which are the stocks with the highest degree of demand, indicated by the color red, being possible and necessary to pass on to the replacement sector, the missing products. the control system was installed by means of plates that indicated the quantity of parts they had and with that, it could be predicted which parts were priorities in reallocation in the stock, replacing mainly products and fundamental parts for the continuity of the maintenance. After applying this process, it was possible to easily identify the needs and speed up the notes of the company\u27s technical staff with the supply sector (purchases), as well as to avoid the constant lack of “priority” parts in the maintenance process. The performance of the kanban production system applied to the marine engine company was concluded, since the nameplates of the missing parts became much more visible, optimizing the replacement process of pending parts. This production technique presented in the study is of great importance in today\u27s world, as it focuses on the quality of the production process and the quality of finished products offered to the market, making the company that has this system solidify and can remain competitive
THE PSYCHOLOGY: Coping Strategies for Cyberbullying by Adolescents in Secondary Schools in Nairobi County, Kenya
Use of social media has a significant influence on the behaviors of teenagers. Although nations around the world are aware of what occurs on websites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and others, there has been evidence of cyberbullying on these platforms. This study was conducted among the teenagers attending secondary schools in Nairobi County, Kenya, to investigate the coping strategies used by adolescents in dealing with the effects of cyberbullying. The research used Ex –Post- Facto design. All of the adolescents in selected secondary schools between the ages of 13 and 18 made up the study population. The study used stratified random sampling techniques to select the sample of 318 adolescents. the study also used purposive sampling to select 5 School Principals and 5 Teacher-Counselors. Data was collected using a modified Cyberbullying Coping Questionnaire. Interview schedules were used to gather information from the Teacher-Counselors and School Principals on the quality of cyberbullying coping strategies. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 and presented using frequency tables and percentages. The results revealed that the coping mechanisms for cyberbullying involved team efforts from parents, teachers, and students. The study found that 58(18.2%) and 81(25.5%) would seek professional advice or report the matter to their parents, teachers or school principals. Additionally, the study found that there was age difference with those who blocked, deleted or informed the bully to stop his bullying behaviors. The study recommends that School Principals and parents should create a safe and healthy environment in both home and school. Further, the study recommends that schools to put in place surveillance strategies to support students who experience cyberbullying and to develop programmes to enhance psychological adjustment
Superior Mesenteric artery syndrome: A systematic review
Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SAMS) or Wilkie syndrome is a rare clinical condition, the incidence of superior mesenteric syndrome reported in some previous studies can range from 0.013% to 0.78% but the true incidence is unknown. This syndrome is characterized by extrinsic constriction on the anterior surface of the duodenum by the superior mesenteric artery and the abdominal aorta, leading to the formation of an aortomesenteric angle < 25°, and a decrease in the normal distance between the aorta and the mesenteric artery to 2-8 mm. Objective: Therefore, the objective of the present study is to carry out a systematic review of the literature to describe the superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Methodology: This study is a systematic literature review, with a qualitative approach, with interpretation and analysis of the elements obtained. The research was carried out from the survey of scientific articles found in the main search platforms for scientific articles: ScienceDirect, PubMed, SciELO, Bireme, from 2017 to 2022. Results and discussion: For this review 15 articles were selected as the studies showed that the symptoms of Wilkie syndrome are confusing, epigastric pain, vomiting, heartburn may be signs of other gastrointestinal pathologies such as gastroesophageal reflux, as presented in the literature. In chronic patients, non-operative therapy is often prolonged due to the long period of hospitalization, with a low success rate ranging from 14 to 71%. Strong\u27s operation, gastrojejunostomy, and duodenujejunostomy are treatment options for Wilkie syndrome. Final considerations: The diagnosis of Wilkie syndrome often depends on a high index of clinical exclusion of other diseases, resulting in ineffective symptomatic symptoms. For this reason, a detailed history should be taken and after careful endoscopic evaluation, CT images should be analyzed carefully and surgery should be considered in cases of longer duration with nutritional support, always emphasizing the importance of individual assessment of each patient
Time delay induces a back to back Hopf bifurcation on oncolytic virotherapy.
This study analyzes a basic mathematical model for the dynamic interactions among tumor cells, infected tumor cells and viruses population, focusing on the viral lytic cycle for oncolytic virotherapy. I study the time delay effect of viral infection on tumor cell populations by identifying bifurcation thresholds in both the burst rate and time delay of viral infection in oncolytic virus therapy. Time delay plays an important role in changing the structure of tumor cell populations in a dynamical system. The multi-bifurcation thresholds of the time delay are observed and also dependent on the bursting rate. This study demonstrates a strong relationship between viral burst rates and time delays in population dynamics. The results of this study show that time delay affects oscillation generation and results in back-to-back Hopf bifurcation. This study provides insight into understanding the relationship between the two control parameters, in which tumor cell populations pattern from equilibrium steady-state solutions to periodic solutions and from periodic solutions to equilibrium-state solutions
