口腔内細菌を用いた微生物燃料電池(MFC)発電実験
To investigate the relationship of oral hygiene with electric potential, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was created using Streptococcus mutans, a representative caries-causing bacteria. S. mutans showed the ability to generate electricity under experimental conditions. This S. mutans-generated electricity was accompaniedby biofilm accumulation on the anode carbon felt electrode surface. The amount of accumulated biofilm in the anode chamber correlated with S. mutans electric power generation in the MFC system. These results suggest that oral microorganisms may act as fuel cells in the oral cavity and that their power may be related to the process of biofilm formation. Measurement of oral potential may be effective as a simple method for monitoring oral hygiene

Epiphytic diatom flora was investigated along the Sea of Japan coast of north-central Honshu, Japan. The brown alga Sargassum thunbergii, the red alga Gelidium elegans, and the seagrass Zostera marina were collected, and the morphology of diatoms attached to them was observed using light and scanning electron microscopy. We found 72 taxa and 94 unidentified taxa in 42 genera in this study, and the microstructure and systematics of the following taxa were examined: Caloneis sp., Cocconeis scutellum var. posidoniae, Cocconeis sp. 1, Cocconeis sp. 2 and Gomphonemopsis sp. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was calculated from the species composition, and the values differed among the samples, possibly reflecting environmental difference of their habitats. Despite the relatively high latitude of this study area, most of the species observed were common in temperate regions and Japanese common species, and there are some subtropical or tropical species such as Epithemia guettingeri and Mastogloia crucicula, suggesting that warm Tsushima Current is affecting the Epiphytic diatom flora
