The Tucci attribution was then taken up in 1976 by Federico Zeri (1976), Everett Fahy (1976, 1984), and Roberta Bartoli (1999). 47 Biagio d’Antonio Tucci was a painter active in central Italy from the 15th century through the beginning of the 16th century. Previously, Biagio was confused with the Faenza painter Giovanni Battista Utili (Bertucci). From the mid 1930s onwards, that situation was clarified and Biagio’s own existence gradually became known. Biagio was born in Florence and studied in that city. Biagio’s early works reveal striking traces of influence from the works of Filippo Lippi and Cosimo Rosselli. Then around 1470, it seems that he encountered Verrocchio’s studio, and his style approached Verrocchio’s style. Historical documents indicate that he was active in Faenza in 1476, and that he was in that locale until at the very least 1504. And yet he maintained his connection with Florence, and he continued to observe the art movements of that city. From 1481 to 1482, he worked with Cosimo Rosselli on his frescos for the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. Some scholars are convinced that the Crossing the Red Sea scene – one of 16 Life of Moses scenes on the south wall of the Sistine Chapel – should be attributed to Biagio. [1] After the completion of the Vatican project, in 1482 he was contracted to paint murals with Perugino in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence (not completed). In addition to his references to Fillipo Lippi, Rosselli, and Verrocchio, Biagio also amply incorporated elements of his period’s various artistic expressive forms, such as that of Domenico Ghirlandaio and the works by northern European artists brought to Florence. And yet, his entire oeuvre reveals a consistent color palette and figural expression characterized by a hard, somewhat geometric doll-like nature.  A connection has been indicated between Verrocchio’s paintings and this work’s Christ Child’s pose, the expression of the Madonna’s curved little fingers supporting him, and its overall light sensibility. [2] The pose – the Christ Child standing on the Madonna’s knees to be shown to the viewer – appeared in Italian art before 1400. There are examples by Filippo Lippi and the Donatello circle in 15th century Florence, and it was a preferred iconography for sculpture and paintings by Verrocchio and his studio. [3] In addition to this example, Biagio repeated the icono-graphy in the Baltimore work and many of his other Madonna and Child paintings.  The tight arrangement of figures within a shallow interior space combined with windows in the background revealing a distant landscape is a compositional type often seen in Flemish painting. The realistic touches, such as the glass vase and its shadow, also indicate study of Northern painting styles. Regarding the depiction of this vase, Bartoli noted a marvelously pre-Caravaggesque” and “an exercise by a truly vir-tuoso luminist.” [4] These elements fully reveal the reception of Northern painting techniques in Florence. Regarding its dating, Bartoli positions the work ca. 1490 when Biagio had fully matured as a painter, with Zappasodi concurring with that dating. Zeri mentioned this work in his discussion of a similar work by Biagio in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, noting that the NMWA work is more carefully painted and overall a superior work. [5]  [WATANABE Shinsuke][1] In addition to this scene, Bartoli particularly attributed to Biagio the Arrest of Jesus and the Crucifixion scenes incorporated in the Last Supper, and the Pope Clement I image above this scene. Cat., 2023 -24 New York, Ahead of Her Time: Pioneering Women from the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century, eds., Virginia Brilliant and Helen Record, Robilant+Voena, p.14 .フェーデ・ガリツィアは17世紀初頭のミラノで活躍した女性画家である。1574年ないし1578年頃、トレント出身の画家である父のもとに生まれたと想定され ［1］、1590年代から主に肖像画家としてミラノで名声を確立、1610年代からは聖堂のための祭壇画も制作していたことが確かめられる。しかし彼女の再評価は20世紀に入ってから、カラヴァッジョと並ぶ北イタリア静物画の旗手として認知されるのを待たねばならなかった。近年は、アルテミジア・ジェンティレスキやエリザベッタ・シラーニと並び17世紀のイタリアを代表する女性画家のひとりとして再評価が著しい。　本作の主人公ユディトは、旧約聖書の外典「ユディト記」に登場するユダヤ人女性で、故郷ベトリアに攻め入ったアッシリア軍の将軍ホロフェルネスを  新収作品  New Acquisitionsフェーデ・ガリツィア［トレント／ミラノ？、1574年頃－ミラノ、1630年頃］《ホロフェルネスの首を持つユディト》1622年頃油彩／カンヴァス127 × 95.5cm署名ありFede Galizia [Trent/Milan?, c. 1574 – Milan, c.1630]Judith with the Head of Holofernes c. 1622Oil on canvas127 x 95 .5 cm Signed ‘FEDE GALITIA’ (on the seam of the sack, lower left).P.2024 -000552己の美貌で誘惑し、泥酔させて斬殺した救国のヒロインである。「ユディト記」は対抗宗教改革下の1592年に正典として認められ、それに以降ユディトは、異教徒＝プロテスタントに対する勝利をもたらした英雄として、17世紀のカトリック圏地域において頻繁に造形化されるに至る ［2］。　ガリツィアは本主題を生涯にわたり度々手掛け、現在 6点が伝わる。最も有名なものは、1596年の年記を持ち現在リングリング美術館に所蔵されるヴァージョンである ［3］。そこではユディトの着る衣装とそれを飾る宝石類のディテールや質感が、16世紀末のマニエリスト的伝統に従い、冷たく精緻に描き分けられている。この作品については、ほぼ同じ構図の自筆ヴァージョンが3点知られている ［4］。2019年には、それとは別の構図による初期の同主題作品が初めて紹介された ［5］。　国立西洋美術館が新たに収蔵した作品は、ガリツィアがこうした作例に続き、その画業の晩年に手掛けたユディト作品と位置付けられるもので、2023年の競売で初出となった作品である。その後、過去にもガリツィア作の鑑定を行っている研究者フェーロが真作として紹介する論文を公刊した ［6］。そこで認められるように、本作は構図のみならず様式、主題解釈の面においてもまったく新しい展開を見せる点で、彼女の画業において際立った重要性を持つ。ユディトは胸をはだけ、簡略化された―バロック絵画の聖人像に典型的な―衣をまとう。様式の面においても、ディテールの精緻な描写は髪飾りなど部分的に用いられるのみとなり、特に背景のドレープや人物の衣に明らかなように、大ぶりの筆致で形態のエッセンスを抽象的に表現する、バロック美術の演劇的な手法が共存するようになる。こうした点は、17世紀に入ってイタリア全土を席巻した新しい時代の絵画にガリツィアが適応しながら、様式をアップデートしていったことの表れであろう。テルツァーギは、ガリツィアがカミッロ・プロカッチーニやジュゼッペ・ヴェルミリオなど、同時代のロンバルディア絵画を参照していること、またトリノの宮廷が所蔵していたカラヴァジェスキ絵画を学んだ可能性を指摘し、本作を1622年頃の作と見なしている ［7］。また、本作は血の滴るホロフェルネスの首の下、侍女の持つ布袋の縁に赤い文字で ‘FEDE GALITIA’と記されている。　本作は過去の作業の結果、新旧少なくとも2種のニス層が混在し、絵画層の一部（特にユディトのスカート部）においてグレーズ層が失われ、かつ古い変色した補彩個所が斑状に入り乱れるなど、最適な状態にあるとは言い難い。そのため当面は修復作業を優先させることとし、展示は2024年度以降を予定している。　国立西洋美術館は今年度に至るまで17世紀以前の女性芸術家による作品を収蔵していなかった。本作は17世紀の女性画家による作品として最初の収蔵作となる。 ［川瀬佑介］［1］ フェーデ・ガリツィアについての基本文献としてはカローリのレゾネと2022年にトレントで開催された展覧会図録が挙げられる。後者にはアップデートされた一次資料集成が付されている。また2021-22年デトロイトとハートフォードで開かれたイタリア女性画家に関する展覧会では、フェデは「1574年頃に生まれ、恐らくトレントに生まれその後ミラノに越した」とされている（p.98）。Flavio Caroli, Fede Galizia, Turin: Umberto Allemandi, 1989 ; Exh. She is thought to have been born either c. 1574 or c. 1578 to a painter from Trent and his wife. [1] Galizia was known primarily as a portrait painter in Milan starting in the 1590s, and it has been confirmed that she also began to produce church altarpiece paintings starting in the 1610s. Her oeuvre was not re-evaluated until the beginning of the 20th century, when she was recognized as a leading Northern Italian still-life painter alongside Caravaggio. There has been a striking recent reevalu-ation of Galizia, in which she is considered a major 17th century Italian female painter, alongside Artemisia Gentileschi and Elisabetta Sirani. Here she has painted Judith, the Jewess who appears in the apoc-ryphal Old Testament Book of Judith. The Assyrian general Holofernes had attacked her hometown of Bethulia and was bewitched by Judith’s beauty. Judith took advantage of the situation and beheaded him as he lay drunk. In 1592, the Counter Reformation recognized the Book of Judith as canonical, and this began the frequent depiction of the theme in 17th century Catholic countries. Judith was envisioned as a Catholic heroine who helped defeat the Protestants and their heretical Reformation. [2] Galizia painted the subject numerous times over the course of her career, with at present six known versions extant. The most famous of these six is the version in The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art which bears an inscription date of 1596. [3] The details and material quality of the garments worn by Judith in the Ringling version and her various jewelry are in line with late 16th century Mannerist traditions, with each rendered in cool, intricate detail. There are three autograph versions of essentially the same composition as the Ringling work. [4] In 2019, an early period version of this theme with a different composition was introduced. [5] Galizia produced the newly acquired NMWA work in her late years, after those four previously known works, and it first appeared in a 2023 auction. After its auction appearance, Filippo Maria Ferro, a scholar who had previously authenticated Galizia works, published an article intro-ducing the work as by Galizia’s own hand. [6] Ferro’s study cites the im-portance of this work in Galizia’s oeuvre, given its demonstration of a completely new development not only in composition but also in her inter-pretation of the subject. Judith has her breast bared and wears the simpli-fied garments typical of Baroque images of Christian saints. In terms of style, Galizia only occasionally used intricate brushwork on hairstyles and other such details, relying instead on the use of typically Baroque dramatic and expansive brushwork that gives an abstracted expression of the depicted form’s essence. In this regard, Galizia appropriately applied the new painting style that swept across Italy at the beginning of the 17th century, all while revealing her own updated style. Terzaghi notes that Galizia referred to Camillo Procaccini, Giuseppe Vermiglio, and other contemporary painters in Lombardy, and that she may have also had an opportunity to study the Caravaggisti paintings in the ducal collection at Turin. Terzaghi dates this work to ca. 1622. [7] The painting is signed “Fede 54Galitia” in red letters along the hem of the bag held by the maid beneath the head of Holofernes dripping blood.  This work cannot be said to be in the best possible condition. Earlier work done on this canvas has resulted in a mixture of both old and new varnish layers, of at least two different types of varnish. The glazing layer has been lost on some paint layer areas, in particular Judith’s skirt. There is scattered spotting visible in old, discolored supplemental brushwork. As a result, conservation work has been prioritized and it will be sched-uled for display sometime after fiscal 2024. Prior to this fiscal year, the NMWA had not owned a work by a female artist from the 17th century or earlier periods. This work is the first work by a 17th century woman painter to enter the NMWA collection.  [KAWASE Yusuke][1] Caroli’s catalogue raisonné and the 2022-2023 Trent catalogue are the primary biblio-graphic sources on Fede Galizia. The Trent exhibition catalogue includes an updated as-sembly of primary source materials. The 2021-22 exhibition on Italian women artists held in Hartford and Detroit states that Fede was born ca.1574, probably in Turin and then later lived in Milan (p.98). Terzaghi considers this work to be ca.1590, in other words, the earliest of the Judith subject works.[6] Ferro 2023.[7] Based on the sales entry sheet provided by the gallery. On the other hand, Ferro notes influence from Guiseppe Vermiglio’s works on the same subject and dates it to slightly earlier, to the 1610s (Ferro 2023, p.190). These various date theories are all based solely on stylistic comparison. Further research is needed for a definitive answer on this matter.

Pietro Huomo selvatico che / di presente se trova presso al Ser.mo / Duca di Parma dal qual naqui io / Antonietta et hora me trovo a presso / Alla Sig.ra donna Isabella Pallavicina / Sig.ra marchesa di Soragna 159(?)”この作品は2023年のオークションに現れたことで存在が知られるようになった。フランスのブロワ城美術館には同構図のヴァージョン作品があり、これまで様々な文献に収録されるなどして広く知られてきたが、絵としての質が高いのは本作品の方である。服や頭上の花々の描写はより緻密であり、特にレースの飾り襟において描き込みが細かい。顔の表情ははるかに豊かである。画中の手紙に年記が見られることもあり、本作品こそがオリジナルであり、ブロワ・ヴァージョンはラヴィニア自身によるレプリカと判断しうる。　少女が手に持つ手紙には年記のほかに、身の上が記されている（ブロワ・ヴァージョンにも制作年以外はおおよそ同一の内容が見られる）。ここから、少女の名はアントニエッタといい、ドン・ピエトロの娘であること、ソラーニャ侯  新収作品  New Acquisitionsラヴィニア・フォンターナ［ボローニャ、1552年－ローマ、1614年］《アントニエッタ・ゴンザレスの肖像》1595年？油彩／カンヴァス54.5 × 47 cmLavinia Fontana [Bologna, 1552 – Rome, 1614]Portrait of Antonietta Gonzales1595?Oil on canvas54 .5 x 47 cmP.2024 -000449爵夫人イザベッラ・パッラヴィチーノのもとに身を寄せていることが知られる。　ドン・ピエトロはペドロ・ゴンザレスを指す。彼は全身が毛に覆われる特殊体質ゆえに少年時代にカナリア諸島からフランス宮廷に連れてこられ、そこで育った。長じて通常の女性と結婚するも、多毛の体質は子供の数人に遺伝する。当時有名だった一家は各地の宮廷から求められ、パリからブリュッセルを経てイタリアはパルマのファルネーゼ家の宮廷に落ち着いた。多毛の息子ふたりは後にローマのファルネーゼ家の宮廷へ送られた ［1］。　ソラーニャ侯爵夫人は1594年4月3日から9日まで、アントニエッタを連れてボローニャを訪問したことが知られる ［2］。ラヴィニアはこの機会に彼女を素描し、それをもとにしてこの作品を制作したと考えるのが自然であろう。実際ラヴィニアによる多毛症の女性を描いた素描が現存し、これまではブロワのヴァージョンの準備素描だと考える研究者が多かった。本作品の画中の銘文には制作年も記されているが、最後の文字は消えかけている。ただし残された部分からは「5」とするのが妥当であるように思われ、だとするとラヴィニアがアントニエッタに会った翌1595年の作となる。本作品の制作年は「1595年？」としたが、今後のさらなる調査が必要である ［3］。　上述した1594年のボローニャ訪問時、ソラーニャ侯爵夫人とアントニエッタはアルドロヴァンディと面会している。アルドロヴァンディは『怪物誌』（未完のまま遺されたものを、バルトロメオ・アンブロジーニが完成し1642年に出版）のなかでゴンザレス一家のほかのメンバーとともにアントニエッタについても記述し、また木版画によるアントニエッタの肖像画も収録している ［4］。　作者ラヴィニア・フォンターナはボローニャの高名な画家プロスペロ・フォンターナの娘であり、唯一生き残った子供であった。父から絵画の手ほどきを受け、1570年代半ば以降の作品が知られる。1580年代には画家として成功を収め多くの祭壇画を制作したほか、とりわけボローニャの学者や上流階級、そしてその家族を数多くの肖像画に描いた。1603～1604年にはローマへ移り、アカデミア・ディ・サン・ルカの会員となった。彼女は美術史上初めて本職の画家として成功を収めた女性であり、130点以上の現存作品が知られるが、これは18世紀以前に活動した女性画家のなかでは最多である。 ［渡辺晋輔］＊本作品の詳細については本紀要収録の論文を参照のこと。［1］ ゴンザレス一家については、R. While another version of the work in the collection of the Musée du Chateau de Blois, France is widely known and was included in various bibliographic sources, this NMWA version is superior in quality. Here the depiction of the garments and flowers on the subject’s head are more intricately depicted, with the lace-adorned collar particularly finely wrought. Her facial expression is more richly rendered. Furthermore, here the date on the letter is visible, and we can thus determine that the NMWA work is the original and the Blois version is a replica by Lavinia’s own hand. In addition to the date, the letter held by the young girl recounts her biography. The Blois version shows essentially the same contents except for the date. The letter states that the young girl is named Antonietta, that she was the daughter of Don Pietro, and was in the care of Marquess Soragna, Isabella Pallavicino. 50 The name Don Pietro refers to Pedro (Pietro) Gonzales. Because of his unusually completely hirsute body, Pedro was brought from the Canary Islands to the French court at a young age and raised there. He then married a normal-bodied young woman and they had many chil-dren, some of whom inherited his hirsute form. Famous at the time, this family traveled from Paris to Brussels, and then on to the court of the Farnese family in Parma Italy. Later, two of the hirsute sons were sent to the court of the  Farnese family in Rome. [1] It is known that Marquess Soragna took Antonietta to Bologna from April 3-9, 1594. [2] It is natural to assume that Lavinia used the opportu-nity to draw Antonietta and then painted an oil painting based on the drawing. In fact, Lavinia’s drawing of a hirsute woman remains extant, and scholars have thought that it is the preparatory sketch for the Blois version. The production date is written in the NMWA version letter, but the final numeral of that date is erased. However, the remaining element of the numeral seems to indicate that it should be read as “5.” That would make it 1595, the year after Lavinia met Antonietta. Here I leave the date as “1595?” while we await further research and clarification. [3] During their above-noted 1594 visit to Bologna, Marquess Soragna and Antonietta met Ulisse Aldrovandi. In his Monstrorum Historia (left unfinished, completed and published by Bartolomeo Ambrosini in 1642), Aldrovandi mentioned Antonietta and other Gonzales family members, and the book also includes a woodcut portrait of Antonietta. [4]   The painter of this work, Lavinia Fontana, was the daughter of Prospero Fontana, a renowned Bolognese painter, and his only surviving child. Lavinia studied painting under her father and works by her dating from the mid-1570s onwards are known. She matured as a painter in the 1580s and is known to have produced some altarpiece paintings. She also painted numerous portraits of Bolognese scholars, as well as members of the upper classes and their families. She moved to Rome in 1603/04, and there became a member of the Accademia di San Luca. Lavinia is cred-ited with being the first woman in European painting history to succeed as a professional painter, and more than 130 of her works are extant today. This number represents the most known paintings by a female artist working prior to the 18th century. [WATANABE Shinsuke][1] Regarding the Gonzales family, see R.
