Force-dependent elasticity of nucleic acids
The functioning of double-stranded (ds) nucleic acids (NAs) in cellular processes is strongly mediated by their elastic response. These processes involve proteins that interact with dsDNA or dsRNA and distort their structures. The perturbation of the elasticity of NAs arising from these deformations is not properly considered by current theoretical frameworks. In this work, we introduce a novel method to assess the impact of mechanical stress on the elastic response of dsDNA and dsRNA through the analysis of the fluctuations of the double helix. Application of this approach to atomistic simulations reveals striking qualitative differences in the force dependence of the mechanical properties of dsDNA with respect to those of dsRNA, which we relate to structural features of these molecules by means of physically-sound minimalistic models
Efficiency-Improving Conditions and Strategies for the Management of Educational Counseling in Primary Education
The article contains a theoretical investigation with applied elements that can be used in the practice of counseling primary school students and their parents. We present the difficulties and contradictions, their content, the mistakes that occur at primary education level and require multidimensional qualified help, psycho-pedagogical support and educational counseling, as well as a number of principles, psycho-pedagogical conditions and strategies, the exploration of which ensures the efficiency management of educational counseling/MEC. The author mentions that, in order to achieve quality management, it is necessary to know the technology of counseling, elucidating some pedagogical tools that, when applied in the practice of school counseling, have demonstrated their functionality
Regulation of bacterial haem biosynthesis
Haem b and sirohaem are two iron-chelated modified tetrapyrroles that serve as prosthetic groups in proteins with crucial roles in a variety of biological functions, such as gas transport, respiration, and nitrite and sulphite reduction. These tetrapyrroles are synthesised from 5-aminolaevulinic acid and share a common pathway until the formation of uroporphyrinogen III, from where the synthesis diverges. In bacteria, sirohaem is produced from uroporphyrinogen III through the activities of one, two or three separate proteins, while haem b is synthesised through three distinct pathways. The biosynthesis of haem b and sirohaem comprises intermediates and end-products that are unstable or potentially hazardous to the cell. Therefore, the cellular metabolic fluxes of tetrapyrroles need to be tightly controlled by substrate channelling and/or other regulatory processes. An Analysis of the Modal Particle in Iliad 24, Part 2: Syntactic and Semantic Analyses
In this article, I discuss the use and absence of the modal particle (MP) ἄν and κεν in Iliad 24. In the first part of the article, I discussed the etymology, determined the usable forms for the investigation and tagged and classified all instances. In the second part, I proceed to the actual analysis of the futuredesiderative, future-subjunctive, subjunctive and optative forms of Iliad 24 (for these labels, see previously in Part 1). This book, one of the longer ones of the Iliad, offers about 160 instances to discuss, and has both many speeches and longer narrative passages. The investigation is based on two previous theories, namely that by Hartung and von Bäumlein that the MP was preferred in concrete instances and absent in generic statements (a theory followed by Delbrück, Monro, Chantraine and Ruijgh) and that by Basset, who argued that the MP was only used in instances closely related to the realm of the speaker. My analysis will check if these theories can be used to explain the use of the MP in Iliad 2
Agroforestry-based community forestry as a large-scale strategy to reforest agricultural encroachment areas in Myanmar: ambition vs. local reality
Abstract:
Context:
The high rate of deforestation in Myanmar is mainly due to agricultural expansion. One task of the Forest Department is to increase tree cover in the encroaching farmland by establishing large-scale agroforestry-based community forests (ACFs).
Aim:
The objectives of this study were to analyze the adoption and performance of the ACFs in the agricultural encroachment areas in the Bago-Yoma region, Myanmar; and to provide recommendations to enhance the adoption of ACFs by farmers.
Methods:
We inventoried 42 sample plots and surveyed 291 farmers. Survey responses were analyzed by binary logistic regression, one-way ANOVA, and non-parametric correlation tests to evaluate factors influencing the adoption of ACFs. Stand characteristics were calculated from the inventory data to evaluate the performance of ACFs.
Results:
Our results show that farmer participation in ACFs was lower than stated in the registry of the Forest Department. Farmers practiced four different agroforestry designs in ACFs with different outcomes. The Forest Department strongly determined tree species and planting designs, farmers’ perception and participation in ACFs. Farmland size, unclear and insufficient information on ACFs, and a negative perception of raising trees in crop fields were the major factors limiting the adoption rates of ACFs.
Conclusion:
We recommend capacity building for farmers and Forest Department staff and raising awareness about the benefits of planting designs and trees on farmland. A stronger consideration of farmers’ preferences for design and species selection could increase their motivation to adopt ACFs and improve the long-term sustainability of ACFs.The data is part of the PhD research of the first author

This in-silico dataset contains hemodynamic arterial waveforms (pressure, flow, velocity, diameter) of 5,000+ healthy virtual subjects belonging to different age decades (20-80 years old), simulated via one-dimensional pulse wave modeling. Pyramidellidae (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia) from the EMEPC/PEPC/Luso/2012 oceanographic expedition to Josephine Seamount in the Northern Atlantic
n the present work the species of the family Pyramidellidae collected by the EMEPC/PEPC/Luso/2012 Expedition to the submarine Atlantic Bank “Josephine Seamount” located between Madeira and mainland Portugal, are revised. A total of 16 species were found, 9 of which were previously known, while 7 are new for science: among the latter, 1 belongs to the genus Pyrgulina, 4 to the genus Odostomia, and 2 to the genus Eulimella. Chrysallida stefanisi (Jeffreys, 1869) is transferred to Pyrgulina and compared to the new species. Furthermore, 9 species are new records from the Josephine Seamount (1 Parthenina, 2 Odostomia, 1 Ondina, 1 Eulimella and 4 Turbonilla)
