A study on the role of high school students in area management on remote islands targeting high schools with study abroad system on remote islands
Many schools on remote islands are closed due to the declining birthrate and aging population. However, the continuation of the school is necessary for regional revitalization. Therefore, a remote island study abroad system was established. Since Nagasaki Prefecture is an advanced region in the remote island study abroad system for high school students, the value of high school students in remote island areas was examined for high schools in Nagasaki Prefecture. As a result, it was found that high school students can contribute to the local community by providing opportunities to think about local issues in club activities and classes. On the other hand, in order to promote study abroad on remote islands, it was found that high school values and mental support for international students are also necessary
Living under ecosystem degradation: Evidence from the mangrove–fishery linkage in Indonesia
This study examines the impacts of ecosystem degradation on social welfare, focusing on the mangrove–fishery linkage in Indonesia. Using nationally representative household data combined with satellite information on spatiotemporal mangrove loss, the study finds that fishery households experienced a decline in annual income ranging from 5.3% to 9.8% in response to a 1% increase in mangrove loss in the region. Under the income shock, fishery households increased their labor input and decreased their non-food consumption; however, they continued being part of the fishery industry. Furthermore, according to a back-ofthe-envelope calculation, the potential economic value of mangrove conservation, estimated in terms of fishery production reached 22,861 US$/hectare/year. This makes conservation substantially more cost-effective than alternative land uses, such as aquaculture and oil palm plantations. These findings highlight the need to support mangrove forest conservation to achieve sustainable development and ecosystem conservation

トポイソメラーゼIIは汎アレナウイルス病に対する新規抗ウイルス薬の標的となり得る
Although many arenaviruses cause severe diseases with high fatality rates each year, treatment options are limited to off-label use of ribavirin, and a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved vaccine is not available. To identify novel therapeutic candidates against arenaviral diseases, an RNA polymerase I-driven minigenome (MG) expression system for Lassa virus (LASV) was developed and optimized for high-throughput screening (HTS). Using this system, we screened 2595 FDA-approved compounds for inhibitors of LASV genome replication and identified multiple compounds including pixantrone maleate, a topoisomerase II inhibitor, as hits. Other tested topoisomerase II inhibitors also suppressed LASV MG activity. These topoisomerase II inhibitors also inhibited Junin virus (JUNV) MG activity and effectively limited infection by the JUNV Candid #1 strain, and siRNA knockdown of both topoisomerases (IIα and IIβ) restricted JUNV replication.
