Understanding the role of publics: A DLSU PUSA communication campaign for cat welfare
The relationship between De La Salle University and the cats on its campus grounds goes back to 2015 when DLSU Professors for the Upliftment of Society\u27s Animals (DLSU PUSA) was founded. As the ever-growing population of the DLSU community continues, the organization has been facing issues regarding the mishandling of these animals and their communicative efforts in preventing this has proven to be insufficient. Given this, the study utilizes the Situational Theory of Publics (STP) developed by Grunig (1997), who theorized that a large group of people can be categorized into smaller groups according to their communicative behavior in regard to a certain issue, and how they initiate action in addressing it. The researchers gathered and analyzed data of DLSU PUSA’s existing communication strategies using a triangulation method of conducting semi-structured interviews and online surveys with members of the DLSU community, as well as a content analysis on the organization’s social media channels. Results showed that the majority are unaware of these cat issues and, therefore take little to no action. The proponents proposed various onsite and online initiatives in the form of a communication campaign to increase engagement among target audiences. A triangulation method was once again conducted after campaign implementation, which gauged the overall effectiveness of the campaign initiatives. Although results showed an improvement in perceptions and behaviors regarding cat welfare, recommendations showed areas of improvement that should be considered for implementation in the future
Investigating potential factors contributing to declining fertility rates in the Philippine regions from 2003 to 2022: A panel data analysis
The fertility rate in the Philippines has been on a steady decline since the 1960s, aiding in the mitigation of the country’s overpopulation crisis. However, prolonged reduction creates a different set of challenges, including an aging population, a shrinking labor force, and economic instability. This paper investigates how underlying factors contribute to the national decline in fertility and create disparities between regions and throughout years. Panel data analysis was conducted on data collected primarily from the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) to identify trends in the relationship between fertility rates and the potential factors that influence its continuous decline, across the Philippine regions and several years. Findings reveal that the final two-way fixed effects model is the best model compared to the one-way fixed effects model for both region and time effects. Women’s sexual activity has a robust relationship with total fertility rate as it was a significant factor of TFR in all three final models. Women’s desire to limit childbearing and their participation in decision-making for their own health care are also significant factors of the two-way fixed effects model. This highlights the importance of Filipino women\u27s autonomy and fertility attitudes in influencing fertility trends
Grasping the stakeholder perspective: Understanding the messaging strategies of the barangay emergency networks health emergency and response system through the lens of stakeholder theory
Using Stakeholder Theory (Lewis, 2019), this study investigated the process in which messaging strategies are planned, communicated, and received by the stakeholders of the organization. The goal of the research is to answer the research question: “How does DRRM-Barangay Poblacion, Makati City utilize messaging strategies of BENHEARS (Barangay Emergency Networks Health Emergency and Response SYSTEM) to achieve stakeholders\u27 uniformed understanding of the BENHEARS Project?”. The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 ‘definitive stakeholders’ described by the organization through the definition of Lewis (2019), which has been divided into three sectors of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Seniors, and Students. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify themes in Lewis’ (2019) definition and illustrate the messaging strategies utilized. The findings revealed diverse responses with the organization’s messaging strategies, and how it is perceived by the stakeholders. The researchers attributed these responses to comprehensive messaging, credibility messaging, community cooperation messaging, tailored messaging, and resolution messaging. Stakeholder Theory emerged as a vital tool for clarity and understanding, raising awareness, and aiding in resolution
Activity-based strategic management
This paper introduces a framework that could change the way firms set their strategies and goals. This framework links the corporate budget to the corporate strategies which are cascaded down to the last employee of the company. This framework bridges the gap between the operations personnel and with the finance people as they talk of only the jargon of activity or process costs. This framework is flexible as it can increase or decrease the budget from the corporate down to the smallest unit of the firm when the focus or goals of the company change within the period. This framework is an effective tool to predict future budgets and operations of the company as it uses activity costs which are more accurate than the traditional method of forecasting. This framework balances the profit maximization goal of a firm with that of the company\u27s culture or shared values and societal expectations especially environmental protection, customer satisfaction and employee welfare
