A Comparative Study on the Cultural Connotations of English and Chinese Plant Words

    Get PDF
It is widely acknowledged that language serves as a carrier of culture. Rooted in unique cultural backgrounds and conveying specific cultural connotations, words worldwide represent the most fundamental and flexible elements of languages. The relationship between humanity and nature is interdependent, and plant culture is closely intertwined with connected to human life. Indeed, the appreciation of plants and the cultivation of aesthetic sensibilities have become meaningful pursuits for many individuals. This is attributable to two key aspects: First, owing to their significantly practical value, bamboos in nature are used to craft tableware, and flower petals serve as important ingredients in certain foods. Plants also play an essential role in air purification, thus rendering them indispensable to human life. Second, people often project their emotions and aspirations onto plants because of the latter’s distinctive shapes and growth habits. However, due to differences in cognitive patterns, religious beliefs, natural environments, and aesthetic values, plant-related vocabulary in English and Chinese embodies different cultural meanings. With the escalating global interaction, understanding the cultural connotations of plants is crucial to avoiding misunderstandings and facilitating effective cross-cultural communication. Cultural blending itself can transcend linguistic barriers and promote the construction of a global village. This essay explores the connotations, similarities and differences, social determinants, and significance of plant words to illuminate their distinct cultural interpretations

    Get PDF
Against the backdrop of the “New Liberal Arts” initiative, which emphasizes interdisciplinary integration, value orientation, and social responsiveness, higher foreign language education is required to transcend the traditional focus on linguistic skills and integrate ideological and political guidance into teaching practice. This study explores the implementation path and effectiveness of Curriculum-based Ideological and Political Education (CIPE) in Comprehensive English courses, a core course for non-English majors in Chinese universities. Adopting an action research approach, the study was conducted with 86 first-year non-English major students (divided into an experimental group and a control group) from a university in eastern China over a 16-week semester. Research tools included teaching design schemes (with CIPE elements integrated for the experimental group), pre/post-language proficiency tests, pre/post-ideological cognition questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, while qualitative data were coded via Nvivo 12.0. Results showed that: 1) The experimental group outperformed the control group in both language proficiency (e.g., reading comprehension, writing coherence) and ideological literacy (e.g., cultural confidence, social responsibility); 2) Students in the experimental group demonstrated higher recognition of the integration of CIPE into English teaching, reporting enhanced interest in cross-cultural communication and a deeper understanding of Chinese values; 3) Teachers involved in the study reported improved ability to identify and integrate ideological elements into textbook content. The findings confirm that integrating CIPE into Comprehensive English courses under the New Liberal Arts framework can achieve the "dual goals" of linguistic competence cultivation and value guidance, providing empirical support for the reform of foreign language education in the New Liberal Arts era

A Study on Exploring the Innovation of English Writing Teaching Mode in Inner Mongolia Universities Guided by Cultural Identity

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore an innovative English writing teaching model guided by cultural identity for universities in Inner Mongolia, addressing the issue of students’ “cultural aphasia” and enhancing their ability to express local culture effectively in English. Adopting a theoretical and practical approach, the research integrates the rich ethnic cultural resources of Inner Mongolia—such as grassland ecology, nomadic traditions, and literary arts—into the English writing curriculum. Key methods include restructuring teaching content, designing localized writing themes, incorporating cultural comparison and critical thinking, reforming evaluation mechanisms, and enhancing teachers’ cross-cultural literacy. The proposed model fosters students’ cultural subjectivity, improves their comprehensive language application skills, and strengthens their cultural confidence and cross-cultural communication abilities. The study concludes that this culturally responsive teaching model not only supports foreign language education reform in ethnic regions but also cultivates students’ patriotism and their capacity to disseminate Chinese and Inner Mongolian cultures globally
