[Abstract] In this work we investigated the use of ultrashort laser pulses to clean antifouling paint from samples of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP), a composite material widely used in shipbuilding. Samples were prepared with two types of paint, self-polishing and hard matrix, according to the scheme used in the shipyard. The paints and the GFRP substrate were characterised by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The effectiveness of the cleaning treatment and the effects on the substrate were evaluated by optical microscopy, interferometric microscopy, SEM-EDS and FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicate that satisfactory cleaning was achieved with controlled removal of unwanted layers without damaging or chemically altering the polymer bulk. The surfaces were also evaluated by SEM and interferometric microscopy to characterise morphological changes, and their wettability was characterised by contact angle measurements. In addition, the results were compared with those obtained by the conventional mechanical method (paint scraping and sanding). A roughening of the laser cleaned surfaces was observed compared to untreated surfaces as well as compared to mechanically cleaned surfaces. Laser treatment caused a decrease in wettability; sanded surfaces showed comparable behaviour. This study demonstrates the potential of femtosecond lasers for safe and effective cleaning of GFRP substrates in a more environmentally friendly manner. This research was partially supported by Grant PID2021-123948OB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”, by the “European Union”

Performance and sustainability of BERT derivatives in dyadic data

[Abstract]: In recent years, the Natural Language Processing (NLP) field has experienced a revolution, where numerous models – based on the Transformer architecture – have emerged to process the ever-growing volume of online text-generated data. This architecture has been the basis for the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs). Enabling their application to many diverse tasks in which they excel with just a fine-tuning process that comes right after a vast pre-training phase. However, their sustainability can often be overlooked, especially regarding computational and environmental costs. Our research aims to compare various BERT derivatives in the context of a dyadic data task while also drawing attention to the growing need for sustainable AI solutions. To this end, we utilize a selection of transformer models in an explainable recommendation setting, modeled as a multi-label classification task originating from a social network context, where users, restaurants, and reviews interact.Research funded by the Spain Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and ERDF “A way of making Europe” (PID2019-109238GB-C22, PID2021-128045OA-I00, PID2023-147404OB-I00), by the “Xunta de Galicia” (ED431C 2022/44) with the European Union ERDF funds, and by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service and “Next-GenerationEU”/PRTR (Grant TSI-100925-2023-1). Presented at: Joint 25th Nordic Conference on Computational Linguistics and 11th Baltic Conference on Human Language Technologies (NoDaLiDa/Baltic-HLT 2025), pages 121–135, March 3-4, 2025 ©2025 University of Tartu LibraryCódigo asociado: https://github.com/anaezquerro/naipar[Abstract]: While LLMs excel in zero-shot tasks, their performance in linguistic challenges like syntactic parsing has been less scrutinized. This paper studies state-of-the-art openweight LLMs on the task by comparing them to baselines that do not have access to the input sentence, including baselines that have not been used in this context such as random projective trees or optimal linear arrangements. The results show that most of the tested LLMs cannot outperform the best uninformed baselines, with only the newest and largest versions of LLaMA doing so for most languages, and still achieving rather low performance. Thus, accurate zero-shot syntactic parsing is not forthcoming with open LLMs.We acknowledge grants SCANNER-UDC (PID2020-113230RB-C21) funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033; GAP (PID2022-139308OA-I00) funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and ERDF, EU; LATCHING (PID2023-147129OB-C21) funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF, EU; and TSI-100925-2023-1 funded by Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service and “NextGenerationEU” PRTR; as well as funding by Xunta de Galicia (ED431C 2024/02), and Centro de Investigación de Galicia “CITIC”, funded by the Xunta de Galicia through the collaboration agreement between the Consellería de Cultura, Educación, Formación Profesional e Universidades and the Galician universities for the reinforcement of the research centres of the Galician University System (CIGUS). Asymptotic inference for a sign-double autoregressive (SDAR) model of order one.

[Abstract]: We propose an extension of the double autoregressive (DAR) model: the sign-double autoregressive (SDAR) model, in the spirit of the GJR-GARCH model (also named the sign-ARCH model). Our model shares the important property of DAR models where a unit root does not imply nonstationarity and it allows for asymmetry, as other alternatives in the literature such as the GJR-GARCH or asymmetric linear DAR and dual-asymmetry linear DAR models. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator in the context of the SDAR model. Furthermore, it is shown by simulations that the asymptotic properties also apply in finite samples. Finally, an empirical application shows the usefulness of our model specially in periods of supply/demand crises of oil disruptions, where spikes of volatility are very likely to be predominant. The author is also very grateful for the financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation -project PID2022-137923NB-I00- and from Xunta de Galicia -project ED431C 2024/16Xunta de Galicia; ED431C 2024/1

Direct and indirect relationships between Food Parental Practices, diet quality, and food satisfaction in adolescents

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Introduction: The relationship between four parental feeding practices from the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire for adolescents (CFPQ-Teen) and Satisfaction With Food-related Life (SWFoL) in adolescents was evaluated using diet quality measured using the Adapted Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) as a mediating variable. Methods: Participants were 860 adolescents aged 10–16 years of both sexes who responded to four factors on the CFPQ-Teen, food satisfaction scale, and diet quality index. Structural equation analysis was used in a structural mediation model on a polychoric correlation matrix using the weighted least squares mean-variance adjusted (WLSMV) method. Results: Diet quality was a mediating factor in the interaction between two parental practices related to parental modeling and adolescent control over SWFoL. There was evidence of a direct relationship between monitoring and restrictive factors for weight control and SWFoL. Conclusions: The findings indicated that the association between parental feeding practices and food satisfaction may be direct or mediated by diet quality in adolescents. The author(s) declare financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. The analysis addresses key themes to understand the connection between art, culture, and design. Firstly, the influence of surrealism and correalism is explored, highlighting how Frederick Kiesler integrates elements such as magic, myths, and biomorphic forms into his architecture and art. His idea of the "spatial continuum" reflects a unique integration of art and life. Additionally, Kiesler's critique of the Modern Movement is analyzed, rejecting functionalism as an empty approach and advocating for an organic design that addresses the integral needs of the human being. Moreover, the evolution of geometric forms to sinuous ones within the Modern Movement is described, linking art, design, and sexuality as cultural and artistic expressions. The guidelines of correalist design are also studied, emphasizing continuity, multifunctionality, and adaptability. Examples such as the Rocker and Chair illustrate this vision, which is also evident in modern pieces. Furthermore, the work examines design oriented toward self-pleasure and eroticism, analyzing objects like the Sybian and the Tantra chair, linking them to surrealism and Verner Panton’s designs. This work proposes an analysis that connects art, design, sexuality, and theory, revealing how cultural and philosophical movements have influenced the creation of objects that transcend their functionality to become cultural and artistic expressions.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.ETSA). Influence of ABCB1 polymorphisms on aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole plasma concentrations

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Aripiprazole (ARI) is an atypical antipsychotic which is a substrate of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in eliminating potentially harmful compounds from the organism. ARI once-monthly (AOM) is a long-acting injectable form which improves treatment compliance. Genetic polymorphisms in ABCB1 may lead to changes in P-gp function, leading to individual differences in drug disposition. The present study aims to determine how the different variants of the three most prevalent SNPs of the ABCB1 gene affect plasma concentrations of ARI, of its active metabolite dehydroaripiprazole (DHA) and ARI/DHA ratio in patients under AOM treatment. The metabolizing state of the two main aripiprazole metabolizing enzymes (CYP2D6 and CYP3A4) were considered to specifically study the effect of P-gp on plasma concentrations of the parent compound and its active metabolite. The study found a clear relationship between the genotypes found for the different ABCB1 SNPs and the ARI/DHA ratio. Specifically, patients with GG genotype in G2677T have almost twice the ratio compared to TT genotype. Similarly, this increase is also found in C3435T with 1.4-fold and in C1236T with 1.6-fold for the same genotypes. Regarding haplotypes, significant differences were obtained between CC-GG-CC and TT-TT-TT patients, with an 87.9% higher ratio in patients with the CC-GG-CC haplotype. There was a clear trend towards lower ARI concentrations and higher DHA concentrations when the presence of mutated T alleles increases. The ABCB1 gene could be a good partner along with CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 genotyping in conjunction with monitoring ARI plasma concentrations. This work was supported by the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy through the Call for Aid to Work Groups 2021–2022 (SEFH21/22) and Xunta de Galicia (GAIN) IN607A2023/04.Xunta de Galicia; IN607A2023/0
