The United States of America v. Darren Seals

    Get PDF
The United States of America has an insatiable appetite for the corpses of Black men. Although only a silent whisper in the field of conflict resolution, Black men and boys face unprecedented levels of state-sponsored direct, structural, and metaphysical violence. Empirical evidence regarding disparities within the nuanced constructs of police killings, stop-and-frisk searches, educational attainment, unemployment, mortality rates, mass incarceration, and all forms of covert counterinsurgency (COIN) operations shows that Black men are without question, enemies of the state and what Leonard Harris calls the ultimate “necro-being.” You see, on September 6, 2016, 29-year-old Black male anti-police activist Darren Seals was found shot to death inside his burning vehicle. Police ruled his death a homicide and never publicly identified any suspects. However, rumors and reports circulated by countless social media platforms and news agencies suggested that Seals was being surveilled by federal law enforcement authorities at the time of his murder. Based on a series of Freedom of Information Privacy Act (FOIPA) requests over a 12-month period, I received and analyzed nearly 10,000 pages of previously undisclosed pages of declassified FBI documents on Darren Seals. Based on primary source documents, this paper presentation will unearth the secret campaign the United States of America waged against Black male anti-police activist, Darren Lashawn Seals Jr

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Crisis: A Multifaceted Examination of Involved Actors and Complex Interests

    No full text
Abstract: The ongoing crisis in the northern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a multifaceted conundrum, marked by a myriad of internal and external actors with diverse interests. This paper undertakes a comprehensive exploration of the nature of the crisis and the roles played by various stakeholders, both within the country and beyond, in diplomatic and military efforts to resolve it. Over the past decade, the DRC has been engulfed in conflict involving over hundreds of armed groups, resulting in millions of civilian deaths, casualties, widespread internal displacements, and refugee flows. War crimes, crimes against humanity, allegations of genocide, and rampant cases of sexual violence have tragically characterized this protracted conflict. At the forefront of the current crisis is the ongoing conflict between the DRC government forces and the March 23 (M23) rebel group. Accusations abound, with the DRC government alleging Rwandan sponsorship of the M23 rebels through military, logistical, and diplomatic support, while Rwanda in turn accuses the DRC government of collaborating with the Force Démocratique pour la Libération du Rwanda (FDLR). Such accusations have deepened the mistrust between these neighboring states, exacerbating tensions within the East African Community (EAC). The conflict has witnessed the utilization of sophisticated military equipment, including advanced drones and air defense systems by both sides. Despite numerous efforts, including peaceful negotiations led by prominent figures such as Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi and President João Lourenço of Angola, the crisis persists unabated. Calls for a ceasefire from the United States (US), European Union member states, and the United Nations Security Council have thus far failed to quell the violence. This paper delves into the involvement of various actors and assesses how their actions, whether implicit or explicit, have influenced efforts to resolve the crisis. Additionally, it explores the prospects for achieving peace and stability in the conflict-ridden region of North Kivu. Drawing upon documentary research and in-depth interviews, information will be thematically presented using a discourse analysis approach. Ultimately, the paper concludes with key recommendations aimed at improving the situation and contributing to the cessation of hostilities, thereby fostering peace and stability in North Kivu and beyond. Keynote: Master of the House? Emerging Insights on the Cell Biology and Ecology of Coral-Dinoflagellate Mutualisms

    No full text
Certain kinds of invertebrates engage with unicellular dinoflagellates to form complex, highly integrated, mutualisms. While eukaryotes as symbionts are extremely rare among notable Intracellular mutualisms, this special union is exceptionally widespread and their productivity results in the creation of a major tropical marine ecosystem. Sensitivity to thermal stress and the demise of coral reef ecosystems globally has stirred considerable interest in the cell biology, physiology, and ecology of this partnership. The recent critical advances in resolving the symbiont’s identity have changed our understanding of these mutualisms in fundamental ways. The testing of various species concepts and establishment of a formal systematics and taxonomy has shifted perceptions about symbiont diversity, distribution, host specificity, and evolution. These basic innovations, made possible with the use of genetics, have lead to exciting discoveries and created new areas of inquiry. Sampling diverse host species living across geographic and depth gradients and the same host individual over time, combined with experimental manipulations of host colonies have provided additional insights about the ecological habits and evolutionary dynamics of the dinoflagellate partner. This and related research reveals much about the give and take of these mutualisms and which partner has greater control over the relationship

Experiencing the First Year of COVID-19 Pandemic: Feelings and Thoughts of Emerging Adults

COVID-19 brought many changes in the daily functioning of many individuals, including emerging adults, due to social distancing, stay-at-home orders, and the closure of public institutions, thus representing a threat to physical and mental health. We investigated how emerging adults felt regarding their experience during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were also interested in what they had been thinking about in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic one year after its declaration. To answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative study. The participants included 51 students aged 19 to 28 years old. Conducting thematic analysis six themes related to the students’ feelings towards COVID-19 emerged: collection of fears, signs of depressed state, social discomfort, loneliness and nostalgia, mood swings and adaptation, and resistance through emotions. Four additional themes emerged related to students’ thoughts on COVID-19: reviewing all information related to the virus, how to protect yourself, orientation to a positive future, and reflection on human strength. These findings give an important insight into the challenges experienced by emerging adults from their perspective, which is valuable for further informing public policy and communities, to create preventive programs that could be applied in similar critical situations

Integrating Islamic Education with Environmental Programs: Strategies for Sustainable Character Development at SMAN 2 and 7 Malang Indonesia

    No full text
This study aims to investigate the integration of Islamic education into environmental programs at State High Schools 2 and 7 Malang (SMAN 2 and 7). Addressing the environmental crisis in Indonesia, it focuses on how religious education can foster environmental consciousness and character development in students, contributing to sustainable education practices. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the integration of Islamic education and environmental programs at SMAN 2 and 7. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, including principals, vice principals, teachers, staff, and students. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews, observations of school activities, and analysis of documentation. The data were analyzed systematically through coding, theme identification, and triangulation to ensure rigor and trustworthiness. Both schools\u27 initiatives include spiritual and environmental programs, curricular integration, and community engagement, fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and religious adherence. The findings suggest that integrating Islamic education with environmental programs can significantly enhance students\u27 environmental awareness and character development. This study provides insights for policymakers and educators on promoting sustainable development through religious education. Future research could explore similar integrations in different regions to broaden the understanding of Islamic education\u27s role in environmental sustainability. This study contributes uniquely by highlighting how Islamic education can support environmental programs in schools, demonstrating effective strategies for character building and environmental love. It underscores the potential of religious education in fostering sustainable living, providing a model for other schools and educational policymakers
