A Phonological Study of Syllable Structure and Economy Properties in Bahasa Indonesia: An OT Account

    Get PDF
This paper contains the phonological and economic properties of the syllable structures of the words in Bahasa Indonesia. It determines the behaviour of certain speech segments attached to the root words and elaborates the economy of the syllable structure in tokens. In Bahasa Indonesia, there are various types of segmental processes related to the addition or deletion of the phonemes that affected the root and altered the entire physical mechanism of the words. This paper aims to know the exact economic conditions of syllable structures in words after adding or deleting segments in Bahasa Indonesia. All the types of conflicts between the candidates will be manipulated with the help of constraint rankings in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky, 1993). The general purpose of this paper is to reveal the whole criteria of OT principles and explored the actual framework of syllables within their marginal and obligatory components. The researcher governed the phonological property of consonant clusters with the help of faithfulness constraints and markedness constraints. The architecture of root words wholly varied from the artificial formulation of other words. Still, after the imposition of constraints, we revealed the concrete fact of linguistic items in Bahasa Indonesia. The groundwork of this paper led to the systematic phenomena of epenthesis and syllable structures of vowels or consonants within OT tenets. The researcher considered the typology of the syllable structure of words and the phonological observations of linguistic features. The generalization of each step of the syllable structure and economy of the words should be related to the positional variation of input and output candidates. The conflict between output candidates is solved based on an input candidate's ranking features to find an optimal form in Optimality Theory

The study used a descriptive design with a qualitative approach with 62 students from batch 2019 at the English Language Education Study Program in Lambung Mangkurat University. The data was collected by distributing an online form questionnaire, then eight students were chosen to be interviewed to gain more in-depth information of their perceptions of flow while performing speaking activities. The data was then presented in percentages to divide the perceptions into positive, neutral, and negative categories and described in descriptive form. The findings discovered students’ perception of the four dimensions of flow: interest, control, focus, and challenge in performing the three Basic Speaking classroom activities. The results revealed that students had a positive perception towards the flow of interest, particularly in Role-Play activity. Results also showed that students had a neutral perception towards the flow of control and focus since they perceived both of these dimensions broadly in every speaking activity. Lastly, the findings showed that students had positive perception towards flow of challenge, particularly in Storytelling activity. As suggested, both students and lecturers require to recognize what makes them engaged in performing the activity while concerning their emotional state since it would be very significant for students’ improvement to be more meaningful in their learning proces

In this study, the writers developed learning media based on the results of previous studies related to learning media for Dayak Ngaju language - English. From previous study, the application, as the learning media, has been equipped with images and audio for each displayed vocabulary. In this development, the writers designed and developed a web mobile based learning media for speaking skill of Dayak Ngaju language - English with more complex material related to expressions accompanied by audio output. The applied research  model was used to adopt techniques in the Agile model using Extreme Programming which consists of  planning, design, coding, and testing. For supporting the learning media development, the data were gathered through direct observation, interviews, and library research. The final product of the study was the web mobile based media of Dayak Ngaju Language - English especially for speaking skill which can be used by elementary school students in learning both local and international languages. The application displays several expressions related to telling location and taste with its audio output to help students learning how to pronounce a sentence or an expression. This media is also accompanied by real pictures to make it more interestingand can be accessed through the website, anytime, anywhere

The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Campalagian Polewali Mandar West Sulawesi.  Twenty three (23) students were taken as samples of the study by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test which administered as a pre-test and post-test. Descriptive statistic was used to analyze the data. The result of data analysis showed that the t-test value for vocabulary was 114.1 and t-table was 2.074. It means that t-test was greater than t-table or 114.1>2.074. The alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of word wall media could improve students’ vocabulary mastery of the EFL junior secondary school students in Polewali Mandar West Sulawesi
