    Charles W. Hanna, DMD, graduated in the first graduating class of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM),1971. During his interview Dr. Hanna discusses his experiences as a student, the changes in dental education, and the growth of the CDM over the last forty years. In his interview Dr. Hanna covers a variety of topics, including a typical day as a dental student. He describes his class schedule, his classmates, and his professors. He describes Dean John Buhler, his personality, and his relationship with the first graduating class. Additionally, Dr. Hanna discusses his participation in the Student American Dental Association. He goes on to describe his post-graduation military service, his dental career, and his involvement in the South Carolina Dental Association. He also shares his recollections of the 1969 hospital workers strike

    David Ivey, DMD, graduated in the second graduating class of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM),1972. During his interview Dr. Ivey discusses his experiences as a student, the changes in dental education, and the growth of the CDM over the last forty years. In his interview Dr. Ivey covers a variety of topics, beginning with his education and how he became interested in dentistry. He recalls his reasons for applying to the CDM, as well as the application process itself. Dr. Ivey describes the second graduating class's relationship and interactions with the first graduating class. He discusses living on campus in the Alumni House during his first semester. He describes Dean John Buhler, his personality, and identifies additional faculty that had significant impact on his dental career. Additionally, he discusses the CDM's first African-American student, George McTeer, and the first female student, Cathy Moss, and recalls his perception of their experiences.     Charles J. King, DMD, joined the College of Dental Medicine (CDM) in 1967 as a professor and chairman of the Department of Crown and Bridge Dentistry. He begins his interview discussing his background, including his education and career prior to joining CDM. He then discusses a variety of topics including the first graduating class, Colcock Hall, construction of the new dental school building, and his teaching experiences. Dr. King also discusses his relationships with other CDM faculty and describes their teaching styles. He recalls working for Dean John Buhler and his successors, including Drs. John Sharry and Arthur Haisten. He goes on to describe the CDM's relationships with Charleston dentists and their support of the school. In addition, Dr. King describes his decision to leave the CDM to become dean of the University of Detroit School of Dentistry

    Harold W. Jablon, DMD, was a student in the first graduating class of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM), 1971. In his interview Dr. Jablon covers a variety of topics, beginning with his education and how he became interested in dentistry. He recalls his reasons for applying to the CDM, as well as the application process itself. Dr. Jablon describes the first dean, Dr. John Buhler, and his personal involvement with students from the first class. In addition, Dr. Jablon identifies early faculty and their positions in the college. He talks about classroom and clinical experiences in the CMD’s temporary facilities in Colcock Hall. He goes on to discuss his experiences in the military, starting his own dental practice, and his involvement with professional dental associations such as the South Carolina Dental Association. Additional topics include changes in dental practice and education since 1967, and Dr. Jablon’s continued support of the CDM

    Walter W. Fingar, DDS, joined the College of Dental Medicine (CDM) in 1968 as its first faculty member in Operative Dentistry. During his tenure at MUSC he served as an assistant dean and an associate dean under Dr. Arthur Haisten before became dean of the college in 1987. He begins his interview discussing his background, including his childhood, education, and military career. Dr. Fingar then talks about his dental career and how he joined the faculty of the CDM. He identifies early faculty, their departments, and describes their personalities. He describes the teaching and laboratory facilities in Colcock Hall when he arrived on campus. He discusses his relationship with previous deans Drs. John Buhler, John H. Sharry, and Arthur Haisten. Additionally, he describes each deans' administrative styles and their approaches to dental education. Dr. Fingar describes his career trajectory from faculty to dean of the CDM
