As I live with Friends and time, I see nature choked By people out for gain At any cost The poor get poorer, The rich get richer, There is no end. So now I pose This question, Which is best? To dream, To think, To live, With friends and time. It's not for me Alone to say. DEDICATION MR. FRANK SEMAKA Some might scoff at the fuss made for Mr. Semaka, after all he is just a vice-principal. Not True! So much is owed by so many to this man. His life work as an educator exceeded the normal bounds of a teacher. He has advised us when we've been confused, encouraged us when we were in doubt, taught us when we did not know and punished us when we should have known better. His accomplishments and recognitions have been many and although his years as an educator runs into higher math his presence will be sorely missed. It is for these reasons and for numerous others that the students of Myers dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Frank Semaka, a scholar among scholars. Dennis Kunimoto - Class President There are mixed feelings I'm sure, at the close of this school year as we contemplate the retirement of our Mr. Semaka. The name of Frank Semaka has become synonymous with education in the high school in Taber. Whenever you think of the high school here, you naturally think of Mr. Semaka. At this time of year, I pay tribute to Mr. Semaka who has given the best years of his life to the youth of our community. He has given of himself freely wherever there was a need. He has over the years been an example to all of us exemplifying the qualities for which he stood; such things as honesty, integrity, devotion to duty and responsibility. Students could "count on him", teachers and administrators could rely on him, the school board and the public could always expect to receive a full measure of service from him. Anyone who became acquainted with him were better off for just having known him. It has been a privilege to have been acquainted with Frank Semaka for some twenty and plus years and to have worked and associated very closely with him for the past ten. In my association with him, I have found him to be co-operative, loyal, good-hearted and a true friend. In the years to come, I wish you, Frank Semaka, the best; for you and yours. Even though you are leaving the profession and our place of employment I hope I have many more opportunities to associate with you. Rell G. Francis Vice-Principal I would like to commend the yearbook committee for their decision to dedicate this edition of the "Myers Dawn" to Mr. Semaka. Such recognition is well deserved. Over the past eight years, I have worked very closely with Mr. Semaka and have appreciated his many fine qualities. The two characteristics that to me are most outstanding are his dependability and his dedication to education. Students and teachers alike could always count on Mr. Semaka to have his work done on time and to have it well done. His concern for individual students was manifested in the many hours of earnest conversation and counselling with literally thousands of students during his more than thirty years of service. Mr. Semaka's exemplar conduct is a model that many students would do well to emulate. James L. George Superintendent PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would like to express my appreciation to all the staff and students for their assistance in various ways during my first year at W. R. Myers. The co-operation and support experienced has been very commendable. Generally, I think the relationship between staff and students has been quite satisfactory, considering that occasional conflicts of interest and irritations occur. Students' Councils (and their committees) have been most helpful in further developing a favorable atmosphere for learning. Their interest and co-operation is continually required for the school to function effectively. The work of staff committees has resulted in some changes to the Jr. High modified program and Jr. and Sr. High promotions policies. We expect that these changes will have beneficial effects for the students concerned. A full-scale semester system has been introduced in Sr. High, and continued on a limited basis in the Jr. High. We are expanding the Work Experience program and the Special Projects Credits. A W. R. Myers in Depth Study Guide has been published, and the School handbook has been revised for the orientation and guidance of teachers and students. Special thanks to the Yearbook Committee and the publishers of the Jr. and Sr. Newspapers. It takes a great deal of planning, responsibility, and work to produce quality publications which will contribute positively to the stature of the school, as well as provide an outlet for creative talents. These are tasks which are very time-consuming, and they may not always appear to be appreciated; but they have a significant role in the total school program -- requiring support and active participation. Our 1972 Graduation ceremony was a bright and colorful occasion. It included a farewell to our Mr. Semaka, teacher at W. R. Myers School for thirty years, (the last 12 years as Vice-principal), and a man who has left his mark in the minds and hearts of many students and teachers. We wish him every success in his retirement years. The Worth Commission Report suggests the possibility of many changes in Education. We will need to assess trends, recommendations, and innovations carefully in terms of educational objectives, in order to make appropriate decisions for the ultimate benefit of our students. We must not forget that the school has a two-fold purpose: to serve the needs and interests of the individual students, and to fulfill objectives of the larger society. Let us proceed into the 1972-'73 school year with courage and conviction. There are numerous jobs to be done well, whether it is in the teaching or the learning. May all of you set worthy goals, and make an earnest effort to achieve those goals. D. V. MILLER COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Social - Cam Humphries - Ron Bissett Productions - Audrey Jaque Assemblies - Ron Last - Pat Odland Athletics - Rod Gough Clubs - Leslie Higa Pep and Publicity - Jerry Gow - Ryan Grigor Last years council began by making a council room on the top floor of the old building. This was done as a summer project. Councils put on a student exchange which was fairly good considering it was the first year. Council also went to Lethbridge and Coaldale to visit the High Schools and gain some new ideas. Council also sponsored several High School dances, and also saved the school from having all dances prohibited. KEYETTE CLUB The Keyette Club is a service group. We had a membership of thirty-three girls. Our executive consisted of Presidents: Cheryl Luehr, first half of year; and Mona Wilde, Secretary: Bronwyn Ellingson, Treasurer: Marilyn Winkler, and our Advisor: Mrs. Neilson. Some of the money raising activities we participated in this year were: bake sales, and the banquet for the Kiwanis Club. We also provided various services for the community. At Christmas time we donated money to the Fire Department for Christmas gifts for welfare children. Also at Christmas we worked along with the Key Club in assisting the Salvation Army. We also aided with the Blood Donors Clinic. At school we helped and did most of the planning for the Fort Benton Exchange. The Rocketry Club is open to all people in the school and we hope to see some better participation in future years. The evaluation identified certain areas of program, procedures, equipment, and physical facilities which needed attention by the staff and school board. Another development was action by the school board to assure greater control over students behaviour. Related to this issue was the formation of a parent/student/teacher advisory committee for consideration of matters of common concern, and participation by many parents in noon supervision throughout the winter months. The popular movement this year was "back to the basics," with its conflicting interpretations and viewpoints. The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 2007-2008)pdfAnother successful ye,or has come. and passed. Students at Myers have been involved in a wide variety of opportunities from .Athletics to Marine Biology to the Hine Arts. This year we sent two different groups to Seattle, Washington for band and baseball. 7t has been exciting to see our students benefit from the different experiences provided by our staff. Another exciting part of our school year included seeing Myers' students experience so much success academically. This success translates into opportunities for them to pursue their lifelong dreams at employment they desire or colleges and universities that they may choose to attend. 7t is always impressive to see how successful our students are at the endeavors they embark on. Students at our school truly make Myers a wonderful place to be each day. Thank you so much for the journey we have all experienced together this year. 1 3 Marcy La Porte Rene Lavoie Doug Leavitt Coralee Leth Tim Luchanski Christine Lumley Darren Majeran Andrea Makarchuk Josh Martens Stacy Me Clelland Stephanie Mills Terry Moline 4 Twyla Valgardson Ali Vos Dalziel Whipple Kathy Wieve S+off C-eJe-bri+y Look jAHke- T ma Fey (Mrs. Schnoor) Chicken from Survivor (Mr. Gammon) Pavid Schwimmer (Mr. Leawtt) 63our+^ey Anderson Tawev* .Arnold Kaitlyn Aubin docly Babei* ■Rachel Bewett C-ory Bracowief* Dako+ak Bran+ner Camera Shy Jordis Bakoway-Adams ■Hillary BetAnett Amber C-airns Tyrell Caldwell Laura C-ampbell 7 Karly Froeklick Lisa Hroe.se Alegar Cilber+son Derrick Goodrich Troy Halifax Cooper Hal! Using the online Book A Research Appointment, you can schedule a time either in person or over Teams with a specific librarian, or an appointment that best fits your schedule. Topics can include discussing research in specific subject areas, search strategies, search terms, citations, research data management, or any research- or library-related topic you would like some guidance on. Open to all researchers from first year to faculty. We would be happy to meet with you! Book a research appointment Meet our new Access Services team members, Marnie Rogstad and Mechelle McCalla Visitors to the University Library this past semester may have seen two new friendly faces at the General Services Desk (GSD). Marnie Rogstad and Mechelle McCalla recently joined the Access Services team and have been spending a large portion of their time helping faculty and students by answering reference questions, providing circulation services and supervising student assistants. In addition to these main responsibilities, they both support several other key library functions. Read on to learn more about Marnie and Mechelle. What is your library background? Where were you working prior to coming to the University of Lethbridge? MR: I have a Master of Information Studies degree with a specialization in Library Science from the University of Toronto and my library experience includes employment at the CBC in Toronto and Vancouver, Lethbridge College, Lethbridge Public Library, and, most recently, Lethbridge School Division. MM: Before coming to the University of Lethbridge, I worked for a year with the University of Athabasca as the primary onsite staff member in the Library. I was in charge of all onsite duties, helping at the service desk and providing technical services. IN THIS ISSUE Historical newspapers from Taber, Coaldale and Nanton added to locally-digitized collections (p.3) New database: HeinOnline Water Rights & Resources (p.5) What happens to your data when you finish a project? (p.4) Recent librarian publications & presentations (p.5) fall 2022 / ISSUE 10 Library Lore | Fall 2022 / Issue 10 2 What is your role at the University Library? MR: As a member of Access Services, I spend most of my time providing reference and circulation support at the General Services Desk. I also have responsibilities with interlibrary loans, course reserves, student assistants, and community engagement. MM: My role here at the university is Library Operations Specialist III. I spend most of my time helping on the General Services Desk, supporting students, faculty members and community members with their questions, solving any issues that may arise and providing reference services. My other time is split between helping with copyright permission, answering copyright-related queries, and providing technical services. How does your work with Access Services support faculty members at the University of Lethbridge? MR: I like to think the work I do helps faculty by providing them with the information and resources they require to do their jobs effectively. That might mean fulfilling an interlibrary loan for their own research needs, getting items on course reserve for their students, making sure their account is up to date so they can access our services, or answering any question they may have. I try to provide the best service I can to any of our patrons and if I can’t help them myself, I will try to find someone who can. MM: I believe my work at the Library is the same for faculty members and students; we are here to provide guidance, resources and information needs for our community’s academic staff, students, and administrators in their pursuit of academic and research excellence. One of my favourite sayings is that Library staff don’t know everything, but they have tools to find out about everything. What have you enjoyed about working at the Library so far? MR: The people. I have really enjoyed getting to know my co-workers as well as the students, faculty, staff, and community members who use (and appreciate!) the Library and its services on a regular basis. MM: I enjoy helping the University community with their questions, solving issues, providing reference service, and teaching them the tools and tips to find relevant information. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? MR: As a fan of the Toronto Raptors, I look forward to them winning another championship someday! MM: I have moved a few times, and I’m new to the Lethbridge area and look forward to exploring the city and what it has to offer, along with the beautiful walking trails. Photo credit: Mikaela Crowson Library Lore | Fall 2022 / Issue 10 3 The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce the availability of thousands of pages of historical newspaper content originating from the Southern Alberta communities of Taber, Coaldale and Nanton. In total, more than 7,000 issues of the Taber Free Press (1907-1910), Taber Times (1911-1971), Coaldale Flyer (1958-1959), Sunny South News (1959-1974) and Nanton News (1903-1971) are now freely accessible online to the public via the Library’s Southern Alberta Newspapers collection. It is anticipated that these materials will be of special interest to historians, genealogists and others fascinated by local history. This project was initiated by Rhys Stevens and Jake Cameron of the Library’s Digitization Team in November 2021 and involved working extensively with Backstage Library Works to digitize nearly 50,000 individual pages of newsprint from microfilm. Microfilm reels were sourced from both the Legislature Library in Edmonton and within the Library’s own collections, and sent to Backstage for scanning and image processing. Processed images were then uploaded to the Library’s own CONTENTdm digital library software where they are now searchable and viewable online. Special thanks to the University Library for funding the project and both the Alberta Legislature Library and the Alberta Newspaper Group for providing materials and permissions in support of the project. Source: Ayers, Scott, Stevens. (2019). Report on the University of Lethbridge Research Data Management Survey, October 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10133/5582 In the Library’s 2018 survey on research data management practices at the University, roughly half of the respondents indicated that they had no set retention date for their data! They opted to keep all forms of data, raw or processed, until they became inaccessible or lost. Preservation of digital information is widely considered to require more constant and ongoing attention than preservation of other media. Depositing data resources with a trusted digital archive can ensure that they are curated and handled according to good practices in digital preservation. Where can you find more information about trusted repositories? The Library’s best practices guide is a great place to start. Another important step for research data management is creating a data management plan at the beginning of your research. This can help address some of the questions around retention early on in your process. It also allows your team to explore what options are available to preserve the data for long-term access. Access can be an important consideration, depending on the requirements of your funding agency or your publisher. To help you create a data management plan, try the DMP Assistant, an excellent free resource. It can help you or your team address questions regarding data collection, documentation and metadata, storage and backup, preservation, sharing and reuse, responsibilities, and ethics and legal compliance. Remember, a DMP is a living document – meaning you can revisit it and make alterations as things change. More questions about data management? Come chat with us! The collection includes books ranging from the 1800s to present day, scholarly articles and periodicals, as well as various American government documents, legislation and Supreme Court briefs. Kilback Each school year brings new challenges to students and staff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and a revised perspective on essential goals. We have struggled this year with development of course objectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty final exams, and a different budgetting system. The School Board is holding regular meetings in the various schools, thus enabling members to become more familiar with daily operations. The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the senior students council, is continuing to provide an effective and satisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipating a substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to further improve this function. Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting and impressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment in sports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate all the students, teachers and other persons who have assisted with coaching and supervising various events during the year. Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic and vocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms of value to students and congruence with school and community objectives. Everest —for their skills, strength, determination, and courage to carry on even when faced with death —for their success in “REACHING NEW HEIGHTS” 1 Those who are willing to take steps enough 3 It is more important to know where we are going than to get there quickly 4 Once again this year W. R. Myers students were asked to give their opinions on several topics. The progressive conservative party was the favorite political party in an election. Favorite cars ranged from Ferrari's to Mustangs. The top song was "Mickey” by Tony Basil. And finally the least favorite actress was Brooke Shields. ELECTIONS If there was an election who would you vote for? 1. Progressive Conservative 2. The Rhino Party 3. Mark Erancis (alias ‘‘the King") 4. Ronald Reagan 5. Cosmetologist 7 One good thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. The activities at the provincial park started at 1 p.m. with a bucket brigade. The group was divided into approximately four equal teams. The awesome team 4, led by Mr. Koski, were the fastest at passing the bucket from the ballpark to the hilltop. Therefore, they were also the first to fill their 5 gallon bucket and win the event. The next event, the log race, saw teams 4 and 2 tie. The team had to carry their log from the ballpark, through the camp area, and then across the river. The first team to get 25 members across won. Center: And the winner of the wet T-shirt contest is . .. Right: Would you believe E.T.’s sister Far right: Key Club traveling incognito. 10 The final event of that day was a tug-of-war. The four teams had a contest in which team #3 emerged victorious. To end it all, the school split into two teams for the last tug-off of the day. To everyone’s astonishment, the rope broke leaving the competitors piled like dominoes. Top left: Clayton Young’s version of a rubber duckie. Top right: Neil Powell pours the winning bucket. Center: The battlefield. Left: Mr. Johnson going ape. “Eat your heart out Clyde!” 11 13 “S!” “P!” The cheerleaders screamed . . . “S!” “P!” the students screamed back. “I!” “R!” yelled the cheerleaders . . . “I!” “R!” they yelled back .. . “I!” “T!” “What does it spell?” “SPIRIT!” The pep rallies over the past school year really had a lot of spirit. Students and teachers got in and found out how much fun pep rallies can be. Contests, plays and presentations have all been part of making our pep rallies the greatest. One of the memorable pep rallies was the one at the beginning of our 1982 school year. During this, the grade 12 victoriously won the pyramid contest and the grade 11 won the rowdy flag award. The P.E. 20-30 class also performed their aerobics for us. The Christmas assembly was just as fun. Presentations were made to teachers by none other than Santa Claus. This pep rally ended with the whole student body joining in and singing Christmas carols. Student pep rallies this year have really been a success and have shown that W. R. Myers has “SPIRIT!” 14 15 Back Row: Richard Pierson, Mark Brewin, Jerry West, Cliff Hudson, Arthur Hashizume, Neil Powell, Tony Fiedler, Allen Bodner, Miles Lowen 5th Row: Cam Ireland, Casey Carlson, Steven Harris, Scott Paun, Brad Litchfield, Mark Francis, Don Boyle, Derrick Krizsan, Rodney Langkopf, Bernie Krahn 4th Row: Rod Sassa, Todd Pickerel!, John Strugari, Byron Gilbertson, Ron Wagner, Gary Allred, Dick Eto, Jim Hendricks, Trevor Tomlinson, Keith Rawleigh 3rd Row: Roxanne Kurio, Barbara Edwards, Nancy Hoogerdijk, Betty Roth, Sandra Cole, Lorene Edwards, Devany Veres, Ann Russell, Holman, Cara-Lee Ireland, Jody Christensen, Arlene Strugari, Michelle Nielsen 2nd Row: Lynn Fletcher, Lisa Cannady, Pam Callan, Audrey Bullock, Shelley Vanderwal, Sharon Hamilton, Sharon Valgardson, Lori Popilchak, Karen Pyrch, Marissa Enns, Judy Miyashiro Front Row: Kathy Maloney, Linda Fekete, Sheila Evanson, Cathy Evanson, Myrna Ostercamp, Karlen Danforth, Jody Parry, Rhonda Ferguson, Darlene Shaw, Wanda Lund, Lorna Pauls Grad '83 — Struggling around the ice arena for the 80th time for the Skate-a-thon; Having your mother buy 8 boxes of grapefruit to sell your quoto; Filling out nosy questionnares; Practices of every kind — Pasting on a smile for those endless pictures; Hoping not to spill any food on you at the banquet; Finally realizing, happy but sad, that it’s all over and everything is now history. The diplomas we will receive attest to the proficiency and application during our high school years. With the support of those people gathered here this evening, we have attained the credentials to go on to meet the new challenges which lie ahead of us. Yet this evening is not without a touch of sadness. This is the last opportunity we shall have to meet as students and it may well be the last occasion at which all of will be present. Because this may be our final meeting together, it might be well to look over the road we have just travelled. Three years ago we entered high school perhaps with a trace of hesistance and uncertainty about our immediate outlook as students. Gradually we put to rest those uncertainties and went on to acquire the education and training that we had sought. Another group of benefits, not so easily measured were also acquired along the way. I refer to such things as the ability to get along with one another. To understand better the word “sportsmanship”. To have clearer the appreciation of the rewards which result from perserverance and application. Those of us who, perhaps a bit skeptically entered this school three years ago, have learned today that there is a reward for effort, and that only real effort produces a genuine reward. Success and achievement is seldom the product of just one’s own efforts. Therefore our thoughts turn to those people who contributed the most to our individual successes. I refer of course to our teachers and parents who often had to scold, conjole, console, and through it all lend guidance and support. Perhaps our expressions of gratitude can best be manifested in the coming years by whatever accomplishments that may become ours. Soon it will be time to pursue new goals. We will face them with optimism, with courage, with determination. Each one of us will soon begin a journey alone toward a chosen task in life. The journey may not always be without its difficulties and temporary setbacks, however, I am confident the virtues and principles which have been bestowed upon us in the past will serve as well in the future. Shortly the vacant places we leave behind tonight will be filled by others, just as eager, just as anxious, just as determined to succeed. It is our sincere wish that all the pleasant and valuable experiences which have been ours, will in due course be theirs. When their turn comes may they be as sorry to leave as we are this evening. This might well be termed the year of Com-prehensives and Computers. On the one hand we are confronted with a set of external exams and significantly higher requirements for obtaining a high school diploma. The greatest impact will be felt by the lower-achieving students who may have to accept some alternative other than the previously anticipated diploma. On the other hand, we see some exciting possibilities for incorporating computer technology into instructional and administrative procedures. During this time of economic restraint, we are faced with a need to carefully examine priorities in our school program and to select those activities which will provide most educational benefit to our students. This assessment is reflected in decisions as to how budget dollars are expended for supplies, equipment, and student travel. Special events have included the Day at the Park, the trip to Europe, and presentations by Rick’s College and the Covenant Players. The Graduation Committee has again worked diligently to prepare for an important and colorful annual event. Our inter-school sports programs have once more been highly successful, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our students and their coaches and to substantial community support. The fine arts programs in music, art, and drama are a very worthwhile complement to our academic core. A stage band for students with special interests, and scheduled in addition to regular band, has made exemplary contributions to the school. In home economics, industrial arts, and business education, our students have received practical knowledge and skills applicable to direct job opportunities or in preparation for further training. The new Vandalism Reduction program has succeeded threefold — property damage has decreased, students are assuming greater responsibility for their behavior, and Students Council has benefited from the money saved and contributed by the School Board. Under the direction of C. Hart, the students in our small Journalism class have included in their productions a weekly column for the Taber Times, several editions of a school newspaper, and the Yearbook itself. We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to this class for their outstanding quality work and performance. — D. Kilback VEGAS BILLIARDS AND ARCADE Weekdays 11 am — 11 pm Sunday 12 pm — 8 pm 43 R. The reaminder of the team were: Lynnece Kerner, Carol Desabrais, Myrna Robinson, Sheila Fujimagari, and Suzanne Vibholm. Our manager this year was Cara- Lee Ireland. Our team started this year off on a good note by winning the preseason tournament. Many tournaments followed, which we also had a great deal of success in. We won the pre-season, post-season, league, and zone tournaments. We placed second in all three Medicine Hat high school tournaments. The season was topped off by us going to provincials and capturing third spot. It has been quite a few years since a girls team from Myers has gone to the provincial tournament, but with the help of a great guy we made it. That great guy is Dennis Fujiamgari, our coach. We would like to extend a special thank-you to him for all the time, effort, and support he gave us. Without him we wouldn’t have made it. We also appreciated all the support from students, teachers, and the parents, we had a good year and a great time. “Thanks, Fuji” Chinook Gardens Restaurant Specializing in Chinese Cuisine Licensed Dining Room Ph. 223-2632 Banquet Facilities — Take Out Service Taber 51 52 MYERS VOLLEYBALL 1982 1982 was supposed to be a poor year for Myers — but somebody forgot to tell the players. Neil Powell was the only returning starter; we had no returning setters; and only nine people showed up at the beginning of the year. Of this nine, one couldn’t handle the practices and quit after the first week, and another was forced to quit early in the season. This left seven players, one more than absolutely necessary, only 2 grade 12’s, 3 grade 1 l’s, and 2 grade 10’s, one returning starter and no setter did not look good. Dick Eto became an instant setter. Setting 200 balls a day and having the same expected of him as we would an experienced setter gave no room to be anything but good. Cam Shields started as a typical grade 11 — good skills but easy to psyche out — not mentally experienced. He caught heck every game for the first half of the season. At the end he could probably take on anybody. Jody Slavik was a grade 10 player who was short. All he had was guts, good coordination, and tremendous strength. Jody got chewed out more than anybody on the team, but he took it, learned and had a tremendous first year. Rob Layton was the surprise I needed. Grade 10’s don’t normally play. The game is new to them, and they don’t have the size, strength, and skill to compete. Rob was tall, strong, coordinated and learned amazingly fast — the best grade 10 player I saw this year. Dave Anderson was a grade 11 player. He started the year with one year of practice under his belt and not one inch taller than grade 10. Nobody expected him to hit, but he could. He was a hustler with a good team attitude. Neil Powell was my only starter. I expected a lot of Neil. When Neil was hot, we won. When he was off, and that happens, we struggled. Neil’s big improvement was in attitude. He was a team leader in practice and was positive to the game all year. Dwight Harris started a year late — his grade

He was honored this school year by a special day dedicated to him. This year also, he received the Centennial Medal in recognition of his dedication to the teaching profession. These honors, however, were long overdue. All Myer's students have long recognized his great contribution to education and their lives. Working through 25 graduations and hundreds of students is his greatest fame. But as well as these things, often most remembered are the small things which show the feelings and energies that his pupils can acknowledge. What other teacher could handle detention duties for as long a duration with the only complaint of the large number of students who perhaps sometimes fail to appear? Who else could liven up the lecture with an occasional story, or an explanation of poker or a sour joke? No student who has ever had the experience of being in any of his classes can ever forget his style, personality, and wit. The little recognition-little in the light of his achievements and contributions-that Mr. Semaka has received-will always be foremost in his memories. But may he always delight in the memories of his many students and have the satisfaction of knowing that, although we do not often show it, we are truly grateful to him for the tremendous influence he has had on our lives. It is with great sincerity that we say, "We're proud of you, Mr. Semaka. " Dawn ’68 Staff Acknowledgements The staff of Dawn '68 gratefully acknowledges the assistance and support of: Mr. Baldwin, our advisor, and the W. R. Myers faculty and staff; Mr. Geraghty's Period 5 English 20 class who eagerly sacrificed their English period to help out when a deadline had to be met; Mr. Brownbill, who patiently toted his camera literally up, down, and around the school for us; Mr. Lawson, Charles Enman, and the Photo Club for the many fine pictures which are an invaluable part of the yearbook; the many anonymous students who, though not officially staff members, were always willing to give any assistance; and, all those who, in any way, have contributed to the Dawn '68. Also: Linda Wall, Co-Layout; Gwenne Halma, Sec. ; Valeen Jensen, Art. Editorial 1 This year's edition of The Dawn is unlike any previous one in content and concept. The Dawn '68 has been an experiment, a challenging, exciting and satisfying experiment. In an effort to present more "action" we have tried to dispense with as many as possible of the traditional still group pictures and dull club reports often borrowed from previous years. In their place, we have experimented with new, varied group poses, unique layout techniques, more interesting copy ( reports ) and new materials. We are aware that not all of our revolutionary ideas will be approved of. However, it is our hope that those who are dissatisfied will support the next staff with their suggestions and assistance. Like any experiment, the Dawn '68 has required an extraordinary amount of time and tedious effort. A common comment among our staff, none of whom had had any previous experience with the production of a yearbook, was, "I never realized there was so much work involved!" The yearbook is thus the efforts of many; my thanks are extended to all those responsible. It is when we view the actual published product, instead of a paraphernalia of assorted pictures, bits of typing, dummy pages, and layout mats, that our efforts become a worthwhile experience. Our experiment will be justified and deemed successful if the Dawn '68 gives you much to reminisce of this school year. Linda Fong ( Editor ) Taber Division School Board STANDING: M. Smith, H. Administration - "The Top Three" These three gentlemen have been entrusted with the awesome task of guiding the education of the eight hundred not-so-studious pupils of Myers. Fulfilling their duties efficiently, they hold the respect of all. Thank you, Mr. George, Mr. Semaka, and Mr. Francis for your devoted, untiring efforts and for the interest shown in each one of us . . . you have truly added much to our memories of high school! Congratulations to Linda Fong and her committee for the long hours of work and planning that have resulted in this fine edition of '68 Dawn. A real effort has been made to make this yearbook unique. Preserved between its covers is the history of a year at Myers School. In addition to the pictures of all the students- the pictures of the activities ranging from initiation to graduation are a storehouse of memories. The publishing of this yearbook is truly a worthwhile venture. I would like to share with all the readers of this Yearbook a definition of education. Education is not a thing or a place; it is a process. Education is the process of producing a person who is publicly useful and privately happy. Education is not to be confused with attendance at school. Attendance may be necessary but it does not guarantee an education. Education is the spark of insight into a problem, it is the revealing of relationships between events, it is the appreciation of the struggle of minds that has provided us with the tremendous fund of knowledge that is now ours. Education is listening to the spoken word and reading the written word; it is taking the ideas of others, analyzing and sifting them, and coming up with a conclusion or generalization of one's own. Education is learning to accept responsibility for one's own actions whether that action be lack of preparation for an exam, or whether that action be hookey playing-both have consequences that are the responsibility of the doer. Education is probing the internal organs of a preserved frog, it is developing a skill of the basketball floor, it is polishing and refining an essay, it is making a painting come to life, it is struggling with a complex problem. Thus, education is a many faceted diamond, with each facet requiring the effort of the learner to polish it to brilliance. Education is obtained by those who work for it. I believe that the facilities, program and staff at Myers school are among the best to be found in Alberta. To be alive in such an age. With every year a lightning Page. Turned in the world's great wonder book. Whereas the learning nations look. When men speak strong for brotherhood; For peace and universal good. We are the product of the years which passed by fast and furious in a changing world following World War II, we were part of the twist, the Beatles, color television, jet propulsion, Canada's Centennial, the space era, the New Math, go-go dancers and the mini-skirt. Think of that glorious golden morning of September, 1956, Brave mothers of Dr. Hamman, Central, Barnwell, Kinniburgh, and the L. T. Westlake districts clasped the eager ones tightly by the hand as the little rascals skipped along, anticipating the grand adventure of school. With scrubbed faces and toothless smiles, we took the first step toward the future which so hopefully belonged to us. It was a new and very different world. We entered timidly, because it was a world of faces we did not know. It was our secret fear that the teacher would expect us to read and write on the first day. We had shy fears of having to go to the bathroom and not wanting to ask. But after the first week, school was a place of laughter, scuffling feet, whispers, and old friends. Listening intently, we ventured through the magic doors of storylands. Then joy burst upon us as we began to understand, following directions, and thinking for ourselves. We rested our little heads on our desks and peeked, squirmed, and suppressed our giggles, for the minutes of rest seemed so endless. During elementary school, we blessed the relief of recess as we ran, jumped, and shouted after being subdued for over an hour. We remember the refreshing coolness of the drinking fountain water; the good smell of fresh air; and the freedom in games of baseball. We learned to accept criticism when we did something wrong. In 1962, we, of different schools met on a common stamping ground in Junior High. We were together--our country cousins of Kinniburgh, the sophisticated ones of Central, the intellectuals of Dr. Hamman, and the delinquents of L. T. Westlake who played a mean game of football, with the girls as the star quarterbacks. We were all enthusiastic, typical twelve year olds; bursting with energy, often noisy, very talkative, and almost immune to discipline. The halls were our domain. Our lockers were everybody’s lockers; our books belonged to anyone, and we were always in a mad scramble to get to class on time. I'm sure we all remember waving our green slips frantically as we brazenly entered the classroom late again. Detentions became an extracurricular activity where we met our pals at noon hour. Without a doubt, we were little monsters in Junior High. In Autumn, 1965, our happy, carefree schooldays resumed. Barnwell cummuters became part of our happy crowd of teeny boppers. During our high school days, we became more serious as we realized our school demanded the price of discipline, hard work, and patience. Tonight, we fully appreciate to be alive in such an age. To Live to it! To Give to it! Valedictory Bruce Conrad "All who have meditated in the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth. ” Those were the words of the ancient philosopher, Aristotle, commenting on the vital role of education in his time. In our time, the need for education is much greater. Our happiness, economic success, and well-being in the future depend on the extent of your education. Our technology today is expanding more rapidly than it has ever done before in the history of man. Many new books, especially those on scientific subjects, become out-dated within five to ten years from the time they are published. The use of automation is increasing. Computers speed up the handling of business; run all sorts of establishments from airports to libraries; and are an indispensible aid to scientific research. They are also essential to national defence. The heart of the NORAD defence system is a giant computer which keeps tab on hundreds of flying objects simultaneously and warns of enemy attack. These remarkable devices are the products of the well-trained minds of the past. But many people are needed now, and many more will be needed in the future, just to keep our defense systems up to date. It is indeed true that the fate of impires depends on the education of the youth. We graduands have, for the past twelve years, been learning the facts which will enable us to take our place in the future. We have not been alone in this effort. Many teachers have laboured to give us the knowledge of past centuries. Facts which have been accumulating for hundreds of years are now our personal possessions thanks to their efforts. To our parents we also extend our personal gratitude. They have given us the rather firm encouragement that we have needed at times. Yes, our thanks go to all those who have so painstakingly prepared us for success in the future; a future full of promise. We will be sorry to leave these familiar hallways and classrooms. They have been the scene of so many happy moments, and the backdrop for so many distressing problems. They will remain in our memories forever. Our high school preparation is now complete; we are ready to go our separate ways and face the great challenges that lie ahead. May we forge forward fearlessly and make our lives as successful and enjoyable as our high school days have been. The future and all it holds is waiting. The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 2017-2018)pdfEvery year W. R Myers, D.A. Ferguson, and Central Elementary School hold a TriSchool BBQ every September. It is a great opportunity for students, parents and teachers to mingle, get to know each other, and have some food and fun! Terry ^>c Every year the students of W.R. Myers walk around the track to honor Terry Fox and his courageous battle with cancer. To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over 750 million for cancer research. S^Da^ Orange Shirt Day is a day recognized across Canada to remember the trauma Indigenous people faced in the residential school system, and to promote reconciliation. The orange shirt reminds us that every child matters and no child is forgotten. Olssmv \Ne will not soon forget the incredible presentation from Eva Olson. Her story of survival through the horrors of the Holocaust was spellbinding and inspirational. Mrs. Olsen told her story to the student body, recounting some of the horrors of the atrocities carried out under the fascist rule in Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Her resilience shone through as she explained the struggles of being seen as less than human. She encouraged to consider her story as a message against the power of bullies in the world around us and proclamation of truth about everyone's intrinsic self-worth. A woman well into her 90s, Eva spoke and showed photos of her experience which put into perspective the relative comfort and freedom that we all live with today. To say that Mrs. Olson's presentation was transformative would be to underestimate its power in the life of our student body. Our gratitude is extended to Eva for this wonderful presentation. - Dale Friesen Welcome to W.R. Myers High 4 School!! f\s W.R. Myers is a small high school with a big heart. When things were going well I think we played as well as any team In the league, and probably should have finished higher than we did. Although we had a group of amazing and talented players, we did not necessarily have the right amount of position players. This, along with numerous injuries, resulted in girls playing out of the position, that they had been playing for years before, for most of the season. This may have affected the over all record, but for me it was incredible how these girls took on this challenge. They never complained once and it amazed me how they rose to this task. No matter where they were asked to play, they played at an extremely high level. V arsity ' ^^J 2018 ZONE & PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS What a season the Girls put together, we had some very close league games throughout the season. Those crazy intense games proved to be just what we needed going into zones and eventually provincials. In the Zone Championship game, we were behind the whole way but we never felt we were out of it. When the final buzzer rang we found ourselves all tied up and ready to go into overtime where we dominated and were able to capture the Zone Banner. At Provincials we put together some of our best games. We traded off a Rebel Classic Championship to earn our way into the Provincial Championship game. We again found ourselves behind most of the game but all those close games throughout the season gave us the composure to keep playing hard, Midway through the 4th quarter we finally got the lead and we were able to hold that lead until the final buzzer and win the Provincial Banner! — ^5 Roster: Sophie Simek(#4), Reagan Bailey(#5), Dani Wright(#6), Langley Moser(#7), Anika Steed(#8), Alex Haller(#9), Kitawna Sparks(#10), Austen Robbins(#l 1), Lauren Steed(#12) r#«!t MJ finishing 3rd in a competitive 11 team league with a league record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and an overall record of 14 wins and 8 losses.
