This alternation is found throughout Japan and unevenly distributed geographically (Uwano 1989); furthermore, the frequency and environment vary among dialects (Ohashi 1974, Hino 1984, Tatsuki 2019). Using the Corpus of Japanese Dialects, this study reports the actual situation of /r/ syllables alternation of various verbs found in natural Japanese discourse of the Kanto and Tohoku regions. The following points are highlighted: (i) The alternation occurs from Kanto to Tohoku, but it occurs more frequently toward Miyagi, Fukushima, and Ibaraki and less frequently away from them; (ii) the frequency of alternations is generally correlated, but not in all dialects; and (iii) in the alternation environment, dialectal variations are observed.application/pdfdepartmental bulletin pape

We compared and analyzed the actual usage of the demonstrative fillers ""ano"" and ""sono"" for each location. As a result, the use of demonstrative fillers was found to be different from the use of standard words among the points where independent-language symmetrical words were frequently used. This was particularly notable in Oita Prefecture, where demonstrative fillers were rarely used, while independent symmetrical verbs were used the most.
Therefore, when we conducted a survey of Oita Prefecture by adding colloquial materials, we found that there were many sites that used independent-language symmetrical words rather than demonstrative fillers. It is thought that symmetrical words are used as fillers on a daily basis in Oita prefecture. In this way, independent symmetrical verbs not only exist at that point, but also affect the use of other fillers. However, this tendency faded over time, suggesting the possibility of secular change.application/pdfdepartmental bulletin pape
