The Director of Education and Research-Based Education: Exploring the Tensions between Policy and What Directors Actually Report

    Get PDF
We examine how Swedish directors of education describe the conditions under which they lead research-based education. The empirical data was collected via questionnaires that were distributed via e-mail to all Swedish directors of education in charge of primary and secondary schools. Our results are based on a ‘frame factor’ theoretical perspective.Directors of education judge themselves as being well-prepared for the task of ensuring that research-based education is provided to the students. They envision their role as one where they read research reports, but they do not disseminate this scientific knowledge throughout schools. The directors assess teachers as having the least responsibility for ensuring that research-based education in primary- and secondary schools is provided to the students. From a cultural frame perspective, the results of the study reveal that school director considerably overestimate their ability to manage a scientific based education

The Education Act - Conditions for a Research-based School A Frame-Factor Theoretical Thinking

    Get PDF
In 2010, the Swedish Parliament enacted[F1]  a new education act that, among other aspects,  stipulated education in primary and secondary schools must be based on research and proven experience. Such a legal requirement that would apply to both school levels is quite innovative not only in Sweden but internationally. Over the years principals and teachers have developed new pedagogies designed to improve teaching and learning.  Could another means toward such improvements lie in a law stipulating that education in primary and secondary school must be based on research and proven experience? What conditions are required for such a law to affect the work of the school faculty and staff? The analytic methods used in this investigation are Lundgren’s frame factor theory and Goffman’s frame analysis. The focus is on the relationship between parliamentary control via legislation and the possibilities of principals and teachers to fulfil the intentions of the law. Our analysis reveals that the law experienced difficulties due to it not being properly implemented and not providing clear instructions on how it should be used in teaching practice. [F1]

This study demonstrates the use of Arduino to automate the operation of a distillation column binary ethanol - water as learning material used by students in the career of Chemical Engineering at the Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral. The main objective was to build an automated computer with the technology of arduino, in which thermocouples were used to offer students the convenience of taking temperature readings on a LCD display and in turn it allowed us to observe the level of the solution to control ignition resistance. So they were able to identify the processes that occur during the distillation unit operation automatically and manually in the Unit Operations Laboratory

    Get PDF

Assessing the effects of World Vision Ghana education project interventions on beneficiaries in the Saboba district of Ghana

Enrolment, Performance and Retention are the key elements in providing quality education and building the skills and technical expertise of its human resource. The roll out of quality education is however thwarted by some challenges and therefore there is the need for concerted efforts on the part of Private Sector, Public Sector and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to collaborate and contribute to achieving this excellence. The study sought to examine the effects of World Vision Intervention education component on the project beneficiaries at the basic school level in the Saboba district of northern Ghana. The investigation sought to give answers to various inquiries like: perception of stakeholders on the effectiveness of the project, effect of the project on academic performance, school enrolment as well as the challenges associated with the implementation of the intervention Program. The approach to the study was eclectic. Results revealed that more than two-thirds of the stakeholders identified Water and Sanitation, and Education as the priority areas of World Vision. It also attributed the appreciation of enrolment to sponsorship packages enjoyed by beneficiaries and the aggressive mount of enrolment campaign drives.  However, increase in enrolment did not translate into performance, as percentage of pupils graduating from the basic school level to higher levels of academic was not impressive. The situation worsened as the performance of the girl child continues to lag compared to their boys counterparts. The study suggests that development actors should incorporate pupil enrolment campaign Programs into their mainstreamed local Programs, with much emphasis on quality instructional delivery as this will enable pupil to climb higher educational ladder. Also, consultation strategy should be incorporated into donors’ agencies Programs to encourage stakeholders to fully participate at each stage (design to implementation) of the Program since that will allow optimal achievement of the intended goals
