“Home Visit A1 Self-Study Course”: Development and Evaluation of a VR-Enhanced Online Course for Japanese Language and Culture Learning
This paper reports the development background, objectives, contents, and evaluation of the “Home Visit A1 Self-Study Course,” which utilizes VR technology. The course is mainly aimed at overseas Japanese language learners and allows them to learn Japanese and culture through a virtual home visit experience. In the production, challenges associated with integrating low immersive VR into e-learning, such as “the lack of active learning opportunities,” “unclear focus points in materials, ” and “ difficulty in providing clear operational instructions,” were attempted to solve with “encouraging voluntary participation,” “clarifying points of interest,” and “designing intuitive navigation,” referring with gamification. Analysis of survey results using the ARCS model confirmed that those modifications and course development plan effectively enhanced “motivation,” “vocabulary acquisition,” and “reducing language anxiety,” which are the effects of using VR in foreign language learning. However, issues related to communication environments and usability were identified, pointing to areas for future improvement.departmental bulletin pape
