Drivers of disparity : how policy responses to COVID-19 can increase inequalities

Countries across the world have deployed macroeconomic policies to address the negative economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown measures. However, these policies can have different outcomes for various segments of the population. This policy briefing assesses the channels through which macroeconomic policy responses in Nigeria and Uganda negatively affect or exclude specific groups, with the aim of resetting policies to achieve more inclusive outcomes that will support economic growth and development in the postCOVID future. It finds that the urban poor and the informal sector are being excluded as a result of the poor coverage of cash transfer programmes and the implementation of policies mostly applicable to the formal sector. Loans to low-income borrowers are not likely to increase despite downward revisions to the monetary policy rate, while importers and poorer households will be the worst hit by exchange rate adjustments in Nigeria. While the middle class and rich are affected by the removal of subsidies in Nigeria, those living in poverty do not benefit from the budget restructuring in Uganda

    Macroeconomic policy development in Tanzania

Since independence, Tanzania has experienced a series of economic shocks, which have pushed the country into an economic crisis. From mid-1980 onwards, major macroeconomic variables have been fluctuating, forcing the government to intervene through fiscal and monetary policies, with mixed results. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 further disrupted any macroeconomic performance achieved earlier. In response, the BoT adopted macroeconomic policies aimed at shielding the economy from further deterioration by injecting greater funding into the public sector, for example through the healthcare sector. This was aimed at containing the spread of the pandemic. This policy briefing discusses macroeconomic policy development in Tanzania with the objective of informing policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic

Comparative study of policy responses to COVID-19 in LICs in Africa

This brief assesses the policy responses to COVID-19 among low-income countries (LICs) in Africa. While LICs have adopted expansionary fiscal and monetary policies in the face of economic lockdown, as well as other mitigation strategies, the scale and quality of such responses have been modest compared with those of emerging and middle-income countries. Policy instruments have also varied across countries, in line with the level of development of domestic financial markets and the extent of digital inclusion. Pre-pandemic economic challenges, such as limited fiscal space, high debt levels and inflation, have also contributed to countries’ weak economic responses. External financing has been crucial for LICs’ ability to respond to the pandemic, but is still inadequate given the huge financial gap that exists. As LICs move from the relief to the recovery phase of COVID-19 economic management, a rethinking of economic responses is crucial both to bring about a swift recovery and to minimize the catastrophic impact of COVID-19 on recent developmental gains

Portuguese version available in IDRC Digital Library : Estudando o uso de artefatos para reconstruir a autoimagem e a identidade entre mulheres sobreviventes de câncer de mama no BrasilThis study qualitatively analyzes the individual and social well-being of female breast cancer survivors who underwent mastectomies in Pernambuco, Brazil. This study focuses on the potential of design as a vehicle for the resignification of self-image by women who have undergone mastectomies due to breast cancer, and to aid in reducing negative perceptions about their bodies. Through interviews, workshops, and exhibitions in collaboration with The Support and Self-Awareness Group for People with Cancer, this study has collected diverse personal experiences from survivors of breast cancer and of those receiving treatments, has highlighted the demands during the different stages of cancer treatment, has provided insight on the relationship these women establish with their own bodies and with artifacts they use, and has allowed women to explore strategies to rebuild their self-image and break taboos related to breasts and breast cancer
