Reading in Russia. Practices of Reading and Literary Communication, 1760-1930

“Reader, where are you?”, wondered, in the mid-1880s, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, one of the Russian writers that paid the most attention to the readership of his time. Saltykov-Shchedrin’s call did not go unanswered. Over the past two centuries, various disciplines – from the social sciences to psychology, literary criticism, semiotics, historiography and bibliography – alternately tried to outline the specific features of the Russian reader and investigate his function in the history of Russian literary civilization. The essays collected in this volume follow in the tradition but, at the same time, present new challenges to the development of the discipline. The contributors, coming from various countries and different cultures (Russia, the US, Italy, France, Britain), discuss the subject of reading in Russia – from the age of Catherine II to the Soviet regime – from various perspectives: from aesthetics to reception, from the analysis of individual or collective practices, to the exploration of the social function of reading, to the spread and evolution of editorial formats. Vieillir selon Flaubert

oai:ojs.riviste.unimi.it:article/2888Cette étude, qui a été réalisée grâce à une bourse de recherche offerte par la Région Auvergne et l’Université Blaise Pascal de Clermont Ferrand, analyse le thème du vieillir dans l’oeuvre de Flaubert. Le processus du vieillir s’y configure selon plusieurs motifs complexes, capables de traduire des aspects très poignants de la vision du monde de l’auteur. L’idée du vieillir est chez Flaubert une pensée constante et incontournable, consubstantielle à la vie, soumise à la loi implacable de l’«infâme rétiaire », le Temps. Il ne reste donc qu’à prendre ses distances de la vie, de ce processus de déchéances et d’échecs, de l’inépuisable vieillissement au fond duquel il n’y a que le Néant ; il ne reste qu’à escamoter la vie en se réfugiant dans l’Art, en se contentant de vivre «encore pendant trois ou quatre livres ».

UN TACITO CONVERSARE : Natura, etica e poesia in Mary Oliver, Denise Levertov e Louise Glück

La complessità delle connessioni fra umano e non-umano ha trovato nella tradizione poetica statunitense sviluppi estetici originali per ampiezza e profondità. Al contempo, volendo articolare nel testo letterario il silenzio della natura e le sue conseguenze, l’indagine estetica si è sempre più caricata di valenze assiologiche ed epistemologiche, in un crescente intrecciarsi di estetica ed etica. In queste pagine, tre delle maggiori poetesse del Novecento americano aiutano ad illuminare proprio questo spazio di riflessione, ancora ampiamente inesplorato dalla critica. La lettura di Denise Levertov, Mary Oliver e Louise Glück rivela una tensione relazionale il cui fulcro immaginativo ed etico è qui rintracciato nel dialogo muto ma costitutivo fra io lirico e natura. Poesia dopo poesia fiorisce l’impegno poetico a tradurre per il lettore quel tacito conversare che intesse il rapporto fra soggetto umano e mondo naturale e che contiene e mantiene le polarità costitutive di un’interazione in apparenza impossibile, silenziosa eppure sensibile, differita eppure presente, ineffabile eppure reale. Questa lirica esalta e potenzia il carattere relazionale e perfino dialogico dell’esperienza. L’espressione poetica si configura, allora, come un tentativo di con-versare, di costruire insieme all’altro, natura e lettore, la poesia. &nbsp

ESTREMI CONFINI: Spazi e narrazioni nella letteratura in lingua inglese

Il volume offre uno sguardo sulla raffigurazione degli spazi estremi nella letteratura in lingua inglese. Nel mondo anglofono, soprattutto in relazione alla sua storia coloniale e postcoloniale, i luoghi «alla fine del mondo» permettono di definire e di ridefinire i rapporti fra il sé e l’altro, fra il centro e le periferie. READING RUSSIA. VOL. 2 : A History of Reading in Modern Russia

Scholars of Russian culture have always paid close attention to texts and their authors, but they have often forgotten about the readers. These volumes illuminate encounters between the Russians and their favorite texts, a centuries-long and continent-spanning “love story” that shaped the way people think, feel, and communicate. The fruit of thirty-one specialists’ research, Reading Russia represents the first attempt to systematically depict the evolution of reading in Russia from the eighteenth century to the present day. The second volume of Reading Russia considers the evolution of reading during the long nineteenth century (1800-1917), particularly in relation to the emergence of new narrative and current affairs publications: novels, on the one hand, and daily newspapers, weekly magazines and thick journals, on the other. The volume examines how economic and social transformations, technological progress and the development of the publishing industry taking place in Russia gradually led to a significant expansion of the reading public. At the same time, in part due to the influence of new literature reading policies in schools, there was a greater cultural standardisation of Russian society, which was partially opposed by new forms of poetic reading. Intersecando teoría postcolonial y gender studies, este volumen se encarga de fundar un territorio imaginario llamado ‘Queeramérica’, donde la ‘naturaleza’ es estudiado montaje, las fronteras son inciertas y las identidades ambiguas. Los cuerpos diferentes y diversamente orientados que deambulan por estas páginas son, sobre todo, ‘cuerpos locales’, emblemáticos de una manera inédita de desglosar el lema de lo local y ‘llevar’ el estigma periférico: cuerpos libertariamente desconfinados sin llegar a ser rendidos al discurso de la transitividad universal. ALICIA KOZAMEH. ANTOLOGÍA PERSONAL

Esta Antología personal de la escritora argentina Alicia Kozameh, precedida por un Estudio preliminar de la catedrática María A. Semilla Durán, tiene un doble objetivo: el de iniciar al lector en el conocimiento de una obra literaria personalísima por una parte; el de guiarlo en su lectura e interpretación de la misma por otra. Los textos así seleccionados están organizados cronológicamente, y constituyen un corte transversal de la obra total, que deja ver cada uno de los estratos que la componen.El volumen se prestigia con una reflexión inédita de la autora sobre la indefensión de la persona ante la escritura autobiográfica. El estudio preliminar que introduce el volumen acompaña el viaje del lector a través de los textos, analizando las secuencias seleccionadas y leyéndolas desde una perspectiva global, atenta a la evolución de la escritura al hilo del tiempo. GEOGRAFÍAS DEL DIÁLOGO: La traducción en la obra de Carmen Martín Gaite

Carmen Martín Gaite, además de novelista, poeta y ensayista, fue una esmerada traductora de textos literarios. Traducir significó para ella situarse en el punto ideal de encuentro entre lectura y escritura, con ánimo de ‘contar’ lo que había leído. Este volumen ofrece el primer estudio sistemático sobre la labor traductora de Carmen Martín Gaite, ya sea como tarea práctica ya sea como elaboración de una teoría implícita de la traducción, en la que destacan el planteamiento irreductiblemente literario de la escritora y su identificación con el lector. Así mismo, la presentación cronológica del corpus completo de sus traducciones permite trazar la trayectoria de una biografía intelectual en la que todo lo leído activa un potencial creativo y de reflexión que desencadena una compleja intertextualidad, ofreciendo una perspectiva eficaz para arrojar luz sobre su obra ‘global’. &nbsp

ESEMPI DI SECONDA MANO : Studi sulla citazione in contesto europeo ed extraeuropeo

Questo volume, che si avvale della partecipazione di un gruppo di docenti del Dipartimento di Lingue e Letterature Straniere dell’Università degli Studi di Milano, apre una prospettiva plurilingue e comparatista sulla citazione come luogo d’incontro tra almeno due voci. La suddivisione nelle diverse parti rende conto dell’internazionalità sottesa all’esigenza del citare che può essere interpretata all’interno della stessa lingua o da una lingua all’altra con diversi risultati. Il merito di questo tipo di ricerche è l’accostamento inedito di opere e contesti che difficilmente entrerebbero in risonanza. La raccolta sincronica di saggi monografici, oltre a offrire preziose messe a fuoco nelle singole aree di studio, propone di fatto collegamenti interdisciplinari promettenti e indispensabili per futuri spunti di riflessione
