    Research on Explosion Characteristics of Sulfur Dust and Risk Control of the Explosion

    AbstractAs dust explosion is a major risk factor threating the safety of sulfur production, evaluating and controlling the hazards of sulfur dust produced in the wet process are very important. Several characteristic parameters including minimum ignition temperature, minimum ignition energy, lower explosive limit, maximum explosion pressure, explosion index, limit oxygen concentration of sulfur dust were determined and investigated by the experimental device such as hot plate, Godbert-Greenwald furnace, Hartmann tube, 20L spherical container of explosive testing. The experimental results indicated the influence rules of particle size, water content and concentration on the explosion characteristics of sulfur dust. The results showed that sulfur dust could be lighted easily and had high explosibility. The explosion risk and strength of sulfur dust decreased with the increase of the particle size. The minimum ignition energy and the minimum ignition temperature increased as the water content increased. The maximum explosion pressure and the explosion index rose at first and went down latter as the dust concentration increases. Prevention and control measures of sulfur dust explosion, from two aspects of building control and process control, were proposed for production, storage and transportation process of sulfur produced in the wet process

    Gastric cancer is the fifth most common malignancies and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with more than 40% of new cases occurring in China. With the advancement of treatment methods, the application of adjuvant therapy and targeted drugs, the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer has been significantly improved. In recent years, more and more studies have reported that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed great value in the clinical application among patients with gastric cancer, including preoperative staging, treatment response evaluation, predicting prognosis and histopathological features, treatment guidance, and molecular imaging. The remarkable research progress of MRI in gastric cancer will provide new evaluation and treatment approaches for clinical diagnosis and treatment.     Automated damage diagnosis of concrete jack arch beam using optimized deep stacked autoencoders and multi-sensor fusion

    A novel hybrid framework of optimized deep learning models combined with multi-sensor fusion is developed for condition diagnosis of concrete arch beam. The vibration responses of structure are first processed by principal component analysis for dimensionality reduction and noise elimination. Then, the deep network based on stacked autoencoders (SAE) is established at each sensor for initial condition diagnosis, where extracted principal components and corresponding condition categories are inputs and output, respectively. To enhance diagnostic accuracy of proposed deep SAE, an enhanced whale optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize network meta-parameters. Eventually, Dempster-Shafer fusion algorithm is employed to combine initial diagnosis results from each sensor to make a final diagnosis. A miniature structural component of Sydney Harbour Bridge with artificial multiple progressive damages is tested in laboratory. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect structural damage accurately, even under the condition of limited sensors and high levels of uncertainties

    Learning Two-Stream CNN for Multi-Modal Age-related Macular Degeneration Categorization

    This paper tackles automated categorization of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a common macular disease among people over 50. Previous research efforts mainly focus on AMD categorization with a single-modal input, let it be a color fundus image or an OCT image. By contrast, we consider AMD categorization given a multi-modal input, a direction that is clinically meaningful yet mostly unexplored. Contrary to the prior art that takes a traditional approach of feature extraction plus classifier training that cannot be jointly optimized, we opt for end-to-end multi-modal Convolutional Neural Networks (MM-CNN). Our MM-CNN is instantiated by a two-stream CNN, with spatially-invariant fusion to combine information from the fundus and OCT streams. In order to visually interpret the contribution of the individual modalities to the final prediction, we extend the class activation mapping (CAM) technique to the multi-modal scenario. For effective training of MM-CNN, we develop two data augmentation methods. One is GAN-based fundus / OCT image synthesis, with our novel use of CAMs as conditional input of a high-resolution image-to-image translation GAN. The other method is Loose Pairing, which pairs a fundus image and an OCT image on the basis of their classes instead of eye identities. Experiments on a clinical dataset consisting of 1,099 color fundus images and 1,290 OCT images acquired from 1,099 distinct eyes verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution for multi-modal AMD categorization

    MLVA distribution characteristics of Yersinia pestis in China and the correlation analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Yersinia pestis</it>, the aetiological agent of plague, has been well defined genotypically on local and worldwide scales. In November 2005, five cases of severe pneumonia of unknown causes, resulting in two deaths, were reported in Yulong, Yunnan province. In this study, we compared <it>Y. pestis </it>isolated from the Yulong focus to strains from other areas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two hundred and thirteen <it>Y. pestis </it>strains collected from different plague foci in China and a live attenuated vaccine strain of <it>Y. pestis </it>(EV76) were genotyped using multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) on 14 loci. A total of 214 <it>Y. pestis </it>strains were divided into 85 MLVA types, and Nei's genetic diversity indices of the various loci ranged between 0.02 - 0.76. Minimum spanning tree analysis showed that <it>Y. pestis </it>in China could be divided into six complexes. It was observed that Microtus strains were different from the other three biovar strains. Each plague focus had its own unique MLVA types.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The strains isolated from Yulong, Yunnan province had a unique MLVA type, indicating a new clone group. Our results suggest that Yulong strains may have a close relationship with strains from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau plague focus.</p

    Twelve Novel Atm Mutations Identified in Chinese Ataxia Telangiectasia Patients

    Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized mainly by progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, and immunodeficiency. This disease is caused by mutations of the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (Atm) gene. More than 500 Atm mutations that are responsible for A-T have been identified so far. However, there have been very few A-T cases reported in China, and only two Chinese A-T patients have undergone Atm gene analysis. In order to systemically investigate A-T in China and map their Atm mutation spectrum, we recruited eight Chinese A-T patients from six unrelated families nationwide. Using direct sequencing of genomic DNA and the multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, we identified twelve pathogenic Atm mutations, including one missense, four nonsense, five frameshift, one splicing, and one large genomic deletion. All the Atm mutations we identified were novel, and no homozygous mutation and founder-effect mutation were found. These results suggest that Atm mutations in Chinese populations are diverse and distinct largely from those in other ethnic areas

    Effect of bedtime administration of blood-pressure lowering agents on ambulatory blood pressure monitoring results: A meta-analysis

    Background: Bedtime administration of antihypertensive drugs currently receives more at­tention, but no clear consensus has been reached on the blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect of this strategy. Methods: We systematically searched literature for clinical trials of ingestion time of anti­hypertensive drugs evaluated by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to perform a meta-analysis which aimed at determining the difference in diurnal, nocturnal, and 24-h mean of systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP), absolute BP reduction from baseline between bedtime administration group (experimental group) and morning (awaking) administration group (control group). Results: The synthesis analysis showed that the level of BP in bedtime administration group was lower than the morning administration group, which reduced diurnal SBP/DBP by 1.67/1.13 mm Hg (p = 0.36/0.48), 24-h SBP/DBP by 2.78/0.36 mm Hg (p = 0.09/0.62), nocturnal SBP/DBP by 6.32/3.17 mm Hg (p = 0.03/0.007). Furthermore, there was lack of statistically significant differences in the diurnal mean of SBP/DBP reduction from baseline between the two groups (p = 0.94/0.85), but bedtime administration resulted in significant reduction from baseline in the nocturnal mean of SBP/DBP, by –4.72/–3.57 mm Hg (p = 0.01/0.05). Funnel plot demonstrated that there was no evidence of publication bias. Conclusions: Administration of ≥ 1 antihypertensive drugs at bedtime or evening results in a greater reduction of nocturnal hypertension than dosing in the morning without loss of efficacy of diurnal and 24 h mean BP reduction

    Epidemiology of human anthrax in China, 1955-2014

    Using national surveillance data for 120,111 human anthrax cases recorded during 1955-2014, we analyzed the temporal, seasonal, geographic, and demographic distribution of this disease in China. After 1978, incidence decreased until 2013, when it reached a low of 0.014 cases/100,000 population. The case-fatality rate, cumulatively 3.6% during the study period, has also decreased since 1990. Cases occurred throughout the year, peaking in August. Geographic distribution decreased overall from west to east, but the cumulative number of affected counties increased during 2005-2014. The disease has shifted from industrial to agricultural workers; 86.7% of cases occurred in farmers and herdsmen. Most (97.7%) reported cases were the cutaneous form. Although progress has been made in reducing incidence, this study highlights areas that need improvement. Adequate laboratory diagnosis is lacking; only 7.6% of cases received laboratory confirmation. Geographic expansion of the disease indicates that livestock control programs will be essential in eradicating anthrax
