    Scoring the sum of correlated results in analytical proficiency testing

    In proficiency tests the participants' results are usually converted into scores. In some schemes the participants are required to report the sum of the concentrations of a number of analytes and this total also is converted into a score. In such instances the scoring procedure for the total should be mathematically consistent with that for the separate analytes. When these analytes are determined from a single test portion, however, the errors in the results from a participant are likely to be correlated because some stages of the analysis are common to all of the analytes. For a consistent outcome, the scoring method must take account of such correlation

    Radiation Pressure Feedback in Galaxies

    We evaluate radiation pressure from starlight on dust as a feedback mechanism in star-forming galaxies by comparing the luminosity and flux of star-forming systems to the dust Eddington limit. The linear LFIR--L'HCN correlation provides evidence that galaxies may be regulated by radiation pressure feedback. We show that star-forming galaxies approach but do not dramatically exceed Eddington, but many systems are significantly below Eddington, perhaps due to the "intermittency" of star formation. Better constraints on the dust-to-gas ratio and the CO- and HCN-to-H2 conversion factors are needed to make a definitive assessment of radiation pressure as a feedback mechanism.Comment: To appear in "Conditions and impact of star formation: New results with Herschel and beyond", Proceedings of the 5th Zermatt ISM symposium. 2 pages, 2 figure

After explaining the constructive approach, its relevance to interval temporal logic and potential applications of our work, we explain the fundamentals of the Alf system. We then present the implementation of the logic and give a number of examples of its use. We conclude by exploring how the work can be extended in the future

    Counselling Foster Parents

    My interest in this topic is the result of having been a foster parent for a period of one year for a group home for emotionally disturbed teenage boys. When my husband and I undertook this project, we had been married for two years and had one daughter of a year old. The five boys we had during this period ranged in age from eleven to fourteen years. This in itself was a phenomenal adjustment to our way of life. A couple grows with its family, passing through the various stages of development, moving gradually from one experience to the next. In our case, we jumped across a span of ten years from our own child to our youngest foster child, missing that gradual transition of adjustment. Because I had had earlier experience as a caseworker, we were afforded the enriching experience of consistent psychiatric consultation and evaluation. This direction was a most helpful experience because each week seemed to bring some sort of a crisis to be dealt with. Today, more and more children coming in to care appear to be suffering from emotional maladjustment. Perhaps we are aware of this only because we are learning more about foster children and the impact of their separation from their families. Perhaps emotional illness is in fact on teh increase. In any event this is a problem which faces many, many foster families today and it is one which we must face realistically. It is my belief that it is important to at least offer foster parents some help in adjusting to their new way of life for not only does the foster child have to be helped to fit into the new surroundings but the foster parents and their own children need assistance in accepting what is bound to be a somewhat different family atmosphere. There may be some, who, when offered these services, will not be able to accept them or who will not realistically need them, but I feel they should be available, and that we would find a significant portion of the foster population who would benefit by such counselling

These justifications are examined, and it is argued that by a combination of lazy evaluation and transformation using the Axiom of Choice that subsets need not be added to the system to make it usable

    We propose a novel algorithm for computing the Walsh-Hadamard Transform (WHT) which consists entirely of Haar wavelet transforms. We prove that the algorithm, which we call the Cascading Haar Wavelet (CHW) algorithm, shares precisely the same serial complexity as the popular divide-and-conquer algorithm for the WHT. We also propose a natural way of parallelizing the algorithm which has a number of attractive features
