    Tidally Driven Processes Leading to Near-Field Turbulence in a Channel at the Crest of the Mendocino Escarpment*

    In situ observations of tidally driven turbulence were obtained in a small channel that transects the crest of the Mendocino Ridge, a site of mixed (diurnal and semidiurnal) tides. Diurnal tides are subinertial at this latitude, and once per day a trapped tide leads to large flows through the channel giving rise to tidal excursion lengths comparable to the width of the ridge crest. During these times, energetic turbulence is observed in the channel, with overturns spanning almost half of the full water depth. A high-resolution, nonhydrostatic, 2.5-dimensional simulation is used to interpret the observations in terms of the advection of a breaking tidal lee wave that extends from the ridge crest to the surface and the subsequent development of a hydraulic jump on the flanks of the ridge. Modeled dissipation rates show that turbulence is strongest on the flanks of the ridge and that local dissipation accounts for 28% of the energy converted from the barotropic tide into baroclinic motion.United States.     Comparing March and May Calving Systems in the Nebraska Sandhills

    Three production years for March and May calving, Red Angus- based cows and their off spring from the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory (GSL), Whitman, NE, were evaluated. Steer progeny were evaluated through harvest and carcass data collected. Calf birth body weight (BW) and breeding BW were greater for May calves vs. March; however, adjusted weaning BW was greater for March calves. Pregnancy rates, weaning rates, calving interval, calving difficulty, and calf vigor were similar between calving systems. Udder score was greater for March cows. Compared with March calf- fed steers, May calf- fed steers had greater hot carcass weight (HCW), longissimus muscle area (LMA), marbling, and backfat. May yearlings had greater HCW, LMA, marbling, and backfat compared with March calf- feds. In the Sandhills, a May calving system can increase production while reducing total herd inputs when compared to a March calving system

    Data were compiled from 4 independent studies conducted over 13 years in the Nebraska Sandhills. Th is combined analysis evaluated the effects of late gestation supplementation on cow and calf productivity in a spring calving herd. Cows wintered on dormant range, sub- irrigated meadow or corn residue. Late gestation supplementation improved pregnancy rates regardless of supplement amount or over winter treatment. Supplement did not affect cow body weight and condition score. Calves born to cows fed supplement had greater weaning weights regardless of when they were weaned

    Explaining Africa’s public consumption procyclicality : revisiting old evidence

    This paper compiles a novel dataset of time-varying measures of government consumption cyclicality for a panel of 46 African economies between 1960 and 2014. Government consumption has, generally, been highly procyclical over time in this group of countries. However, sample averages hide serious heterogeneity across countries with the majority of them showing procyclical behavior despite some positive signs of graduation from the “procyclicality trap” in a few cases. By means of weighted least squares regressions, we find that more developed African economies tend to have a smaller degree of government consumption procyclicality. Countries with higher social fragmentation and those are more reliant on foreign aid inflows tend to have a more procyclical government consumption policy. Better governance promotes counter- cyclical fiscal policy whileincreased democracy dampens it.     Elastic waves with transverse polarization inside incidence plane can create longitudinal surface wave (LSW) after reflection from a free surface. At a critical incidence angle this LSW accumulates energy density, which can be orders of magnitude higher than energy density of the incident transverse wave.     This paper generalizes earlier work on Hamiltonian boundary terms by omitting the requirement that the spacelike hypersurfaces ÎŁt\Sigma_t intersect the timelike boundary B\cal B orthogonally. The expressions for the action and Hamiltonian are calculated and the required subtraction of a background contribution is discussed.     The thermal history and hydrocarbon source rock potential of the mid Carboniferous Quebradas Formation in SW Portugal and its correlatives in western Atlantic offshore basins

    The mid Carboniferous Quebradas Formation of the ‘South Portuguese Zone’ (SPZ) comprises 80m of post-mature black mudrocks with a mean TOC of 2.5%. Lithostratigraphic units of similar facies and age such as the Holywell Shale, the Edale Shale and the Bowland Shale are important HC source rocks in the UK, having sourced a considerable proportion of the hydrocarbons in the East Irish Sea, East Midlands and Formby oilfields respectively. The kerogen content of the Quebradas Formation is mixed but slightly more oil-prone in its lower part. At outcrop, it is strongly post-mature with vitrinite reflectance (Rr) ca. 4%. Illite crystallinity results from the Quebradas Formation and associated units suggest lower maturity than vitrinite reflectance. Analysis of the optic fabric of very thin coal lenses within the Brejeira Formation which overlies the Quebradas Formation suggests that peak temperatures were attained before the Variscan (late Carboniferous – early Permian) deformation. Triassic rocks unconformably overlying the Carboniferous sequence are much less mature, with Rr ca. 1.2%. Although the the Quebradas Fm has no HC source potential onshore due to its high maturity, Carboniferous rocks offshore may not have experienced the same extreme thermal history as the SPZ
