    Lipid Metabolism and Comparative Genomics

    Unilever asked the Study Group to focus on two problems. The first concerned dysregulated lipid metabolism which is a feature of many diseases including metabolic syndrome, obesity and coronary heart disease. The Study Group was asked to develop a model of the kinetics of lipoprotein metabolism between healthy and obese states incorporating the activities of key enzymes. The second concerned the use of comparative genomics in understanding and comparing metabolic networks in bacterium. Comparative genomics is a method to make inferences on the genome of a new organism using information of a previously charaterised organism. The first mathematical question is how one would quantify such a metabolic map in a statistical sense, in particular, where there are different levels of confidence for presense of different parts of the map. The next and most important question is how one can design a measurement strategy to maximise the confidence in the accuracy of the metabolic map

    Reducing CO2 Emissions in the Upper Midwest: Technology, Resources, Economics, and Policy

    We develop scenarios for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity sector in the upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Manitoba) by 80% relative to 1990 levels. The report has three major components: 1) an inventory of CO2 emissions from all fossil fuel combustion in the region from 1960-2001, subdividing by economic sector and specific electricity generating station; 2) an evaluation of all electricity resources in the region and all technologies for utilizing them, taking into account the overall scale of the resource, technology costs, and other issues that influence the selection of a certain technology; and 3) the development of a simulation model to examine the impact of various factors (policies, prices, technologies, resources) on the regional electricity supply and its emissions from 2005-2055.Environmental Economics and Policy,

    Macroscopic examination of surgical resections from the head and neck may be difficult due to the complex anatomy of this area. Recognition of normal anatomical structures is essential for accurate assessment of the extent of a disease process. Communication with the surgical team, correct specimen orientation and sampling are critical for assessment and the importance of radiological and clinical correlation is emphasised. Tumour involvement at each subsite is highlighted with reference to where there are implications on pathological staging and the potential need for adjuvant therapy

    Development of a Set of Force Response Equations to Represent the Musculature in Infants to Study Development Dysplasia of the Hip

    This paper describes how a force response equation was created to model muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the hip joint to improve a biomechanical model of an infant hip to study Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). DDH is the most common abnormality in newborn infants and is defined as any amount of instability in the hip including complete dislocation. Researchers at our institution are attempting to increase the success rate of treatment methods by creating computer models of the biomechanics of infant hip instability and dislocation. The computer model used a scaled adult pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula and foot to match the size of an infant for the bone geometry. The current infant muscle model is an undifferentiated model based on the area of a single infant muscle, for all muscles modeled. This muscle model was able to provide some insight into the nature of the biomechanics. To improve the infant muscle model, a set of equations differentiated by muscle area was developed. The new set of equations uses a ratio of infant over adult muscle area of a single muscle to create a ratio that can be used to scale all adult muscle areas to infant areas. This model will be more physiologically accurate because it will be differentiated based on muscle area

    Prevalence of sustainability reporting practices of a sample of listed companies on established and emerging stock exchanges

    The business sector has a substantial role in addressing current environmental issues and concerns. Consequently, there is a growing adoption of corporate sustainability principles and practices across all market sectors. This study examined four developed and four emerging stock markets and the sustainability reporting practices of the top 20 and bottom 20 companies in each. The results illustrate that the developed market sector was more advanced in its corporate sustainability reporting, both in the proportion of companies issuing a sustainability report (approximately 60 per cent) and the proportion of company webpages dedicated to sustainability reporting. This difference was largely due to the effect of the top 20 companies. There was little difference between developed and developing markets when only the bottom 20 companies were considered, of which less than one-third provided sustainability reports. These results show that sustainability reporting is prevalent in both developed and developing markets, especially among market leading companies, but that overall, most developing markets have some catching up to do
