Dogs with a Gastric Fistula: A Simple but Advanced Model for Simultaneous Recording of Secretion, Motility, Blood Flow and Output of Hormones

The conscious dog with a gastric cannula and permanent catheters in the portal vein and gastric arteries can be used for chronic simultaneous investigations of gastrointestinal functions. We have used the model for the recording of gastric secretion, blood flow, output of hormones and antroduodenal motility. The procedures for surgery, measurements, maintenance and pitfalls of the model are described

Investigation of the human nasal microbiome in persons with long- And short-term exposure to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria from the pig farm environment

Since its emergence in the early 2000s, livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex 398 (LA-MRSA CC398) has led to an increasing number of human infections in Denmark and other European countries with industrial pig production. LA-MRSA CC398 is primarily associated with skin infections among pig farm workers but is also increasingly recognized as a cause of life-threatening disease among elderly and immunocompromised people. Pig farm workers may serve as vehicles for the spread of LA-MRSA CC398 and other farm-origin bacteria between farms and into the general population. Yet, little is known about the bacterial community dynamics in pig farm workers and other persons with long- and short-term exposure to the pig farm environment. To gain insight into this, we investigated the nasal microbiomes in pig farm workers during a workweek on four LA-MRSA CC398-positive pig farms, as well as in short-term visitors two hours before, immediately after, and 48 hours after a 1-hour visit to another LA-MRSA CC398-positive pig farm. S. aureus and LA-MRSA CC398 carriage was quantified by means of culture, and the composition of the bacterial communities was investigated through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Pig farm workers often carried LA-MRSA CC398 and other bacteria from the pig farm environment, both at work and at home, although at lower levels at home. In contrast, short-term visitors were subject to a less dramatic and rapidly reversible change in the nasal bacterial community composition. These results suggest that pig farm workers may be an important source of LA-MRSA CC398 and perhaps other pathogens of human and veterinary relevance

Renal Artery Stenting in Consecutive High-Risk Patients With Atherosclerotic Renovascular Disease:A Prospective 2-Center Cohort Study

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the effects of renal artery stenting in consecutive patients with severe atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis and high‐risk clinical presentations as defined in a national protocol developed in 2015. METHODS AND RESULTS: Since the protocol was initiated, 102 patients have been referred for revascularization according to the following high‐risk criteria: severe renal artery stenosis (≥70%) with true resistant hypertension, rapidly declining kidney function, or recurrent heart failure/sudden pulmonary edema. At baseline, the mean 24‐hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure was 166.2 mm Hg (95% CI, 162.0–170.4), the defined daily dose of antihypertensive medication was 6.5 (95% CI, 5.8–7.3), and the estimated glomerular filtration rate was 41.1 mL/min per 1.73m(2) (95% CI, 36.6–45.6). In 96 patients with available 3‐month follow‐up data, mean 24‐hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure decreased by 19.6 mm Hg (95% CI, 15.4–23.8; P<0.001), the defined daily dose of antihypertensive medication was reduced by 52% (95% CI, 41%–62%; P<0.001), and estimated glomerular filtration rate increased by 7.8 mL/min per 1.73m(2) (95% CI, 4.5–11.1; P<0.001). All changes persisted after 24 month follow‐up. Among 17 patients with a history of hospitalization for acute decompensated heart failure, 14 patients had no new episodes after successful revascularization. CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective cohort study, we observed a reduction in blood pressure and antihypertensive medication, an increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate, and a decrease in new hospital admissions attributable to heart failure/sudden pulmonary edema after renal artery stenting. X-ray in-line holography and holotomography at the NanoMAX beamline

Coherent X-ray imaging techniques, such as in-line holography, exploit the high brilliance provided by diffraction-limited storage rings to perform imaging sensitive to the electron density through contrast due to the phase shift, rather than conventional attenuation contrast. Thus, coherent X-ray imaging techniques enable high-sensitivity and low-dose imaging, especially for low-atomic-number (Z) chemical elements and materials with similar attenuation contrast. Here, the first implementation of in-line holography at the NanoMAX beamline is presented, which benefits from the exceptional focusing capabilities and the high brilliance provided by MAX IV, the first operational diffraction-limited storage ring up to approximately 300 eV. It is demonstrated that in-line holography at NanoMAX can provide 2D diffraction-limited images, where the achievable resolution is only limited by the 70 nm focal spot at 13 keV X-ray energy. Also, the 3D capabilities of this instrument are demonstrated by performing holotomography on a chalk sample at a mesoscale resolution of around 155 nm. It is foreseen that in-line holography will broaden the spectra of capabilities of MAX IV by providing fast 2D and 3D electron density images from mesoscale down to nanoscale resolution
