The development of smart grids has revolutionized modern energy markets, enabling users to participate in demand response (DR) programs and maintain a balance between power generation and demand. However, users’ decreased awareness poses a challenge in responding to signals from DR programs. To address this issue, energy management controllers (EMCs) have emerged as automated solutions for energy management problems using DR signals. This study introduces a novel hybrid algorithm called the hybrid genetic bacteria foraging optimization algorithm (HGBFOA), which combines the desirable features of the genetic algorithm (GA) and bacteria foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA) in its design and implementation. The proposed HGBFOA-based EMC effectively solves energy management problems for four categories of residential loads: time elastic, power elastic, critical, and hybrid. By leveraging the characteristics of GA and BFOA, the HGBFOA algorithm achieves an efficient appliance scheduling mechanism, reduced energy consumption, minimized peak-to-average ratio (PAR), cost optimization, and improved user comfort level. To evaluate the performance of HGBFOA, comparisons were made with other well-known algorithms, including the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), GA, BFOA, and hybrid genetic particle optimization algorithm (HGPO). The results demonstrate that the HGBFOA algorithm outperforms existing algorithms in terms of scheduling, energy consumption, power costs, PAR, and user comfort

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) regulate tumor cell proliferation and metastasis in many types of cancers including hematological cancers. Organosulfurs derived from garlic have a potential to inhibit the expression of COX-2 in cancer patients. Objective: In this study, we evaluate the transcription levels of COX-2 in the spleen of lymphoma rats supplemented with garlic powder. Methods: Three groups of rats were equally divided into control (n=3), lymphoma (n=3), and lymphoma supplemented with garlic powder (n=3) groups. Lymphoma was induced via administration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) intraperitoneally 4 times in 2 week periods. Garlic powder mixed with ground commercial rat diet was given daily at 5% of feed intake, starting at day 1 of MNU exposure. All rats were kept for 24 weeks before spleen samples were collected and extracted for total RNA. The transcription levels of COX-2 transcript in the total RNA were determined using quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assay. The total RNA was converted into cDNA followed by amplification of COX-2 and beta-actin genes. Results: Results of the amplification of COX-2 transcripts were normalized with the housekeeping gene, beta-actin. The relative transcription level of COX-2 transcript in the spleen of lymphoma rats was 1.941±0.131 fold higher (p<0.05) than control rats (1.00±0.001 fold), while the transcription levels in the spleen of lymphoma rats supplemented with garlic was significantly lower (0.423±0.239 SE fold) than the lymphoma rats that received no supplementation of garlic powder. Conclusion: The findings suggest that garlic powder reduces the transcription of COX-2 transcript in the spleen of lymphoma rats

Performance Analysis of Wireless Fading Channels: A Unified Approach

    Get PDF
This thesis presents two major contributions. First, we consider a unified approach to model and simplify wireless fading channels or potentially fading scenarios by mixture distributions, namely using the mixture of Gaussian (MoG) and the mixture Gamma (MG) distributions. The approximation methodologies rely on maximum a posteriori and likelihood estimation techniques, such as the expectation-maximization and variational Bayes. Through the use of the mean-square error and the Kullback-Leibler divergence measures, we show that our models provide similar accuracy yet simpler representation than other existing models. In addition, we provide closed-form expressions or approximations for several performance metrics used in wireless communication systems, including the moment generating function, the raw moments, the amount of fading, the outage probability, and the average channel capacity. Second, through the use of the MoG and MG distributions, we provide a unifying and verstaile performance analysis over intricate generalized and composite fading channels in several contemporary wireless research topics, such as cognitive radio networks, cooperative- and diversity-based communications, and impulsive noise environments. The new approach and proposed distributions resolves intractable problems in many other fields, such as cognitive radio networks, cooperative networks, cascaded wireless applications and others

Development and Wearer Trial of ECG-Garment with Textile-based Dry Electrodes

    No full text
This paper presents the design and development process of ECG (electrocardiogram) garments using different textile-based dry electrodes and assesses their performance through wearer trials. To comply with the design criteria identified for such garments, sequences of sketches with modified design features, physical prototyping and trial with industry grade mannequin were first implemented before finalising a prototype design with three different fabrics for chest, front and back panels. ECG electrodes were configured on the chest panel individually with following two different conductive textile materials - single jersey knitted fabric and embroidery thread – to construct two different prototypes, which were wearer-trialled with a human participant. Results show that the embroidered electrodes performed better than the knitted electrodes in ECG detection in still and active conditions within the same design and construct of garment

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

    No full text
Background: Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods: The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18-49, 50-69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results: NNVs were more favourable in surgical patients than the general population. The most favourable NNVs were in patients aged 70 years or more needing cancer surgery (351; best case 196, worst case 816) or non-cancer surgery (733; best case 407, worst case 1664). Both exceeded the NNV in the general population (1840; best case 1196, worst case 3066). NNVs for surgical patients remained favourable at a range of SARS-CoV-2 incidence rates in sensitivity analysis modelling. Globally, prioritizing preoperative vaccination of patients needing elective surgery ahead of the general population could prevent an additional 58 687 (best case 115 007, worst case 20 177) COVID-19-related deaths in 1 year. Conclusion: As global roll out of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination proceeds, patients needing elective surgery should be prioritized ahead of the general population
