Cultural Sustainability in University Students’ Flamenco Music Event Attendance: A Neural Networks Approach

    Get PDF
University students consume live music; however, almost 40% declare that they have never attended a flamenco show, an intangible heritage of humankind. Numerous studies have shown that cultural capital and socioeconomic profile, among other factors, are variables that influence cultural consumption, and therefore, cultural sustainability. Considering the relationship between several variables, this paper pursues a double objective. On the one hand, identifying the factors that influence attendance at flamenco shows, and on the other, proposing a predictive model that quantifies the likelihood of an individual attending a flamenco show. To this end, we analyse flamenco consumption by means of a survey conducted on 452 university students, using Multilayer Perceptrom (a non-parametric model), a methodology based on an artificial neural network. Our results confirm the importance of cultural capital, as well as personal and external factors, among other. The findings of this research work are of potential interest for management and planning of cultural events, as well as to promote cultural sustainability

Economic and financial viability plan for the enterpreneurship of a lyric theatre low-cost company: The case of Zarzuela in Spain

Taking into account that one of the major handicaps when undertaken in the cultural sector is the problem of cost and demand volatility, this paper aims to implement a viability plan for the entrepreneurship of a lyric theatre low-cost company, dedicated to Zarzuela performance, a type of Spanish music like Opera. Firstly, the cultural sector data are analysed in terms of supply and demand and secondly a viability plan is carried out for three years. According to the results it is concluded that this type of venture is very risky if you do not have grant or other financial resources, due to the variability of demand and the increase in unit costs as the artistic performance has a fixed production technology that cannot absorb the technical progress of the rest of the economy

This doctoral dissertation presented below was born from the idea of combining Music and Financial Economics. In order to achieve this purpose, two empirical studies are proposed, one concerning demand applied to the consumption of flamenco and the other, more economic-financial, applied to cultural entrepreneurship in the specific case of zarzuela. Prior to all this, a thorough theoretical research has been carried out, by analyzing the main articles published in recent years on the state of the matter. Furthermore, supply and demand data are exposed in relation to different music genres or styles, both in Spain and Andalusia. From a survey of 452 students belonging to different faculties of the University of Seville, two methodologies have been used, one parametric (logit model) and the other one non-parametric (neural network model). Regarding the first study, the results allow us to better understand the determinants of young people's consumption of flamenco music. As for the second study, to understand the economic-financial difficulties in cultural entrepreneurship, among other issues, are considered. We believe that everything exposed here can be useful for cultural managers, music fans, and the general audience

Does the flamenco tourist exist? Motivation and segmentation

Flamenco is a popular art, symbol of the culture of southern Spain, has a growing number of fans both from this country and from the rest of the world. This paper tried to find out if flamenco can be a determinant motivational element when choosing a destination and if there is a specific flamenco tourist who tries to travel to symbolic flamenco places. The results show evidence of the existence of three motivational dimensions directly related to flamenco: flamenco experience, flamenco brand, flamenco pretext. Also, a so-called ‘musical dimension’ was observed, where the motivation to participate in musical experiences in general prevailed. Based on these motivational dimensions, three types of flamenco tourists were identified: flamenco lovers, friends of flamenco, and musical attraction. It was found that the group formed by ‘flamenco lovers’ has a very high sensitivity to all musical variables related to flamenco, being this one, the most numerous group
