    AIS Investigation of Agricultural Monocultures

    Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were acquired over an agricultural area in eastern San Joaquin County, California in July, 1984. Cover type information was subsequently collected for all fields along this flight line. The lack of detailed ground data on individual fields, however, limited AIS data analysis to a qualitative comparison of the spectral reflectance curves for a total of nine cover types. Based on this analysis, it appears that cover types with a positive slope in the 1550 to 1700 nm region have a higher spectral response in the 1200 to 1300 nm region compared to those cover types with a negative slope in the 1550 to 1700 nm region. Within cover type, spectral variability was also found to be greater than that between cover types. Given the lack of additional field data, the reason for these differences is a matter of speculation

    Joseph Haydn (?): Attribution and Reception

    Due to multiple causes, the most dramatic of which is surely the widespread publishing fraud in the during the eighteenth century, but also including the more mundane cases of clerical errors, lapses of memory, and sheer laziness, a great many compositions were attributed to Joseph Haydn that were actually written by his contemporaries. Consequently, one of the major loci of Haydn research (especially in the decades following World War II) was authentication, the attempt to correctly attribute dubious compositions, whether to affirm Haydn’s authorship or to dismiss it and affirm the authorship of one of his contemporaries. This branch of musicology has declined markedly in recent decades (concurrently with the rise of reception studies), suggesting the utility of reexamining the assumptions, goals, techniques, and results of authentication studies, including effects such studies may have had on the receptions of both Haydn and those of his contemporaries whose works were attributed to him. This paper analyzes and critiques dozens of published studies of authenticity in Haydn research, noting their underlying assumptions and how those assumptions affected scholars’ work in this field, and contextualizes these studies in relation to watershed moments in the history of the discipline of musicology. It concludes that, with a few exceptions, attribution studies ultimately made little impact on reception, due to the overly positivistic attitudes of Haydn scholars

    Biological and physical oceanographic observations pertaining to the trawl fishery in a region of persistent coastal upwelling

    An upwelling episode in the Point Sal region of the central California coast is examined by using data obtained by a data buoy. The episodes was interrupted by the abrupt abatement of the strong wind which promotes coastal upwelling. The mean hourly upwelling index is calculated to be higher than the 20 year mean monthly value. During 3 days of light wind commercial bottom trawl operations were possible. Shipboard estimates of chlorophyll content in surface waters during trawling show the high concentrations that are indicative of a rich biomass of phytoplankton, a result of the upwelling episode. Satellite imagery shows the extent of the upwelling water to be of the order of 100 km offshore; the result of many upwelling episodes. Shipboard echo sounder data show the presence of various delmersal species and of zooplakton; the latter graze on the phytoplankton in the upper euphotic layers. The fish catch data are recorded according to species for 2 days of trawling, and the catch per trawl hour is recorded

    Nowhere to Hide: Radio-faint AGN in the GOODS-N field. I. Initial catalogue and radio properties

    (Abridged) Conventional radio surveys of deep fields ordinarily have arc-second scale resolutions often insufficient to reliably separate radio emission in distant galaxies originating from star-formation and AGN-related activity. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) can offer a solution by identifying only the most compact radio emitting regions in galaxies at cosmological distances where the high brightness temperatures (in excess of 10510^5 K) can only be reliably attributed to AGN activity. We present the first in a series of papers exploring the faint compact radio population using a new wide-field VLBI survey of the GOODS-N field. The unparalleled sensitivity of the European VLBI Network (EVN) will probe a luminosity range rarely seen in deep wide-field VLBI observations, thus providing insights into the role of AGN to radio luminosities of the order 1022 W Hz−110^{22}~\mathrm{W\,Hz^{-1}} across cosmic time. The newest VLBI techniques are used to completely cover an entire 7'.5 radius area to milliarcsecond resolutions, while bright radio sources (S>0.1S > 0.1 mJy) are targeted up to 25 arcmin from the pointing centre. Multi-source self-calibration, and a primary beam model for the EVN array are used to correct for residual phase errors and primary beam attenuation respectively. This paper presents the largest catalogue of VLBI detected sources in GOODS-N comprising of 31 compact radio sources across a redshift range of 0.11-3.44, almost three times more than previous VLBI surveys in this field. We provide a machine-readable catalogue and introduce the radio properties of the detected sources using complementary data from the e-MERLIN Galaxy Evolution survey (eMERGE).Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted in A&A.     The non-gliadin fraction of the 70% ethanol extracts of compensated nulli-tetrasomics and ditelosomics of Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring has been analyzed by combined electrofocusing and electrophoresis. Seventeen of the 21 protein map components of the euploid have been ascribed to eight chromosomes: 4A, 3BS, 6BS, 7BS, 3D, 4D, 5D and 7DS.
