    Bubble-Induced Inverse Gas-Liquid-Solid Fluidized Bed

    Gas-liquid-solid fluidized beds have been widely applied in wastewater treatment, however, the current method of wastewater process has several limitations. Hence, an improved method is in demand. A 3.5 height and 0.1534m inner diameter column was used to study the hydrodynamic characteristics of a bubble-induced three-phase inverse fluidized bed. Air, water and three types of low-density particles were employed as gas, liquid and solid phases. The hydrodynamic properties in the bubble-induced three-phase fluidized bed were investigated to provide the basic information for the industrial process, such as flow regime, bed expansion ratio and phase holdups. A flow regime map containing fixed bed, initial expansion, transition regime, complete fluidization and freeboard regime is presented. The bed expansion ratio behaves like the conventional fluidized bed. The axial profiles of the phase holdups show that with increasing gas velocity, liquid holdup has a downward trend, while gas holdup has an upward trend. Solids holdup is irrelevant with the gas velocity. Based on the Richardson-Zaki equation, a preliminary model between the solids holdup and superficial gas velocity was built

    A Fully-Integrated Reconfigurable Dual-Band Transceiver for Short Range Wireless Communications in 180 nm CMOS

The TRX consists of two individually-optimized RF front-ends for each band and one shared power-scalable analog baseband. The sub-GHz receiver has achieved the maximum 75 dBc 3rd-order harmonic rejection ratio (HRR3) by inserting a Q-enhanced notch filtering RF amplifier (RFA). In 2.4 GHz band, a single-ended-to-differential RFA with gain/phase imbalance compensation is proposed in the receiver. A ΣΔ fractional-N PLL frequency synthesizer with two switchable Class-C VCOs is employed to provide the LOs. Moreover, the integrated multi-mode PAs achieve the output P1dB (OP1dB) of 16.3 dBm and 14.1 dBm with both 25% PAE for sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, respectively. A power-control loop is proposed to detect the input signal PAPR in real-time and flexibly reconfigure the PA's operation modes to enhance the back-off efficiency. With this proposed technique, the PAE of the sub-GHz PA is improved by x3.24 and x1.41 at 9 dB and 3 dB back-off powers, respectively, and the PAE of the 2.4 GHz PA is improved by x2.17 at 6 dB back-off power. The presented transceiver has achieved comparable or even better performance in terms of noise figure, HRR, OP1dB and power efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art.Peer reviewe

    Nutrient Characteristics in Relation to Plant Size of a Perennial Grass Under Grazing Exclusion in Degraded Grassland

    Identifying the linkages between nutrient properties and plant size is important for reducing uncertainty in understanding the mechanisms of plant phenotypic plasticity. Although the positive effects of grazing exclusion on plant morphological plasticity has been well documented, surprisingly little is known about the relationship of nutrient strategies with plant shoot size after long-term grazing exclusion. We experimentally investigated the impacts of grazing exclusion over time (0, 9, 15, and 35 years) on the relationships of nutrient traits (nutrient concentration, allocation, and stoichiometry) of with morphological plasticity in Leymus chinensis, which is a dominant species in grasslands of Inner Mongolia, China. Our results showed that there was a significantly negative correlation between the degrees of plasticity and stability of various morphological traits. Increases in plant size by 126.41, 164.17, and 247.47% were observed with the increase of grazing exclusion time of 9, 15, and 35 years, respectively. Plant size was negatively correlated with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, but was positively correlated with carbon (C) concentration. Biomass partitioning and leaf to stem ratios of nutrient concentrations contributed more than 95% of the changes in N, P, and C allocation in L. chinensis leaves and stems induced by grazing exclusions. Nine years’ grazing exclusion rapidly changed the nutrient concentrations (averaged by -34.84%), leaf to stem nutrient allocations (averaged by -86.75%), and ecological stoichiometry (averaged by +46.54%) compared to free-grazing, whereas there was no significant trend of these nutrient traits across the 9, 15, and 35 years’ grazing exclusion in L. chinensis individuals. Our findings suggest that with the increase of the duration of the grazing exclusion, time effects on plant performances gradually weakened both in plant morphological plasticity and nutrient properties.     Contrasting Strategies of Alfalfa Stem Elongation in Response to Fall Dormancy in Early Growth Stage: The Tradeoff between Internode Length and Internode Number.

    Fall dormancy (FD) in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) can be described using 11 FD ratings, is widely used as an important indicator of stress resistance, productive performance and spring growth. However, the contrasting growth strategies in internode length and internode number in alfalfa cultivars with different FD rating are poorly understood. Here, a growth chamber study was conducted to investigate the effect of FD on plant height, aboveground biomass, internode length, and internode number in alfalfa individuals in the early growth stages. In order to simulate the alfalfa growth environment in the early stage, 11 alfalfa cultivars with FD ratings from one to 11 were chosen and seeded at the greenhouse, and then were transplanted into an artificial growth chamber. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in a split-plot arrangement with three replicates. Plant height, above-ground biomass, internode length, and internode number were measured in early growth stage in all individuals. Our findings showed that plant height and the aboveground biomass of alfalfa did not significantly differ among 11 different FD rated cultivars. Also, internode length and internode number positively affected plant height and the aboveground biomass of alfalfa individuals and the average internode length significantly increased with increasing FD rating. However, internode number tended to sharply decline when the FD rating increased. Moreover, there were no correlations, slightly negative correlations, and strongly negative correlations between internode length and internode number in alfalfa individuals among the three scales, including within-FD ratings, within-FD categories and inter-FD ratings, respectively. Therefore, our results highlighted that contrasting growth strategies in stem elongation were adopted by alfalfa with different FD ratings in the early growth stage. Alfalfa cultivars with a high FD rating have longer internodes, whereas more dormant alfalfa cultivars have a larger number of internodes. There were tradeoffs between internode length and internode number in response to FD in alfalfa, which reflected certain scale-dependence

    Effects of surface straw mulching and buried straw layer on soil water content and salinity dynamics in saline soils

    Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of wheat straw return methods, which included the use of surface straw mulch and a buried straw layer, on soil water content, electrical conductivity (EC), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), in saline sodic soils in an effort to identify useful ways for reducing soil salt accumulation and enhancing soil water content. The results showed that the straw return treatments were effective for inhibiting salt accumulation and soil water loss, resulting in a reduction of EC and SAR, and an enhancement of soil water content. After a year-long experiment, compared to the treatment with no straw return, the straw burial and straw mulching treatments decreased the EC by 10.5% and 3.5%, reduced the SAR by 7.4% and 21.5%, and increased the soil water by 0.9% and 4.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the combined application of straw layer burial and surface straw return had a more significant effect than the individual treatments; the positive effect of straw return occurred mainly focused in the topsoil (0-40 cm) and decreased with increasing soil depth. Our results allowed us to conclude that burial of the straw layer was necessary to enhance the effects of surface mulch, and the combination of surface mulch (3.0 t¡ha-1 of wheat straw) and straw layer burial (6.0 t¡ha-1 of wheat straw) proved to be a better straw return method than the others.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.     Research on evolution characteristics of multi-information and stability of goaf under deep tunnel

    In order to ensure the safety of construction and operation of the tunnel near the goaf. Based on dynamic numerical analysis, three-dimensional finite difference numerical simulation software was developed by FISH programming. Then, on basis of the construction of practical engineering, the safety distance and energy evolution mechanism in an underlying mining goaf area of deep tunnel are studied. The results show that according to the different safe distance in an underlying mining goaf area of deep tunnel, the tunnel structure is divided into danger zone, influence zone and safe zone. The relationship between the cumulative horizontal energy and stress ratio can be divided into three stages: acceleration, average stability and deceleration. The energy evolution of the three stages can also better reflect the damage and failure mechanism inside the surrounding rock mass. The measured field curve shows that when the safety distance is 12 m, the goaf has limited influence on the stability of the tunnel, and the construction in an underlying mining goaf area of deep tunnel is stable on the whole and meets the safety requirements. The best safe distance between the tunnel and goaf is about one time of the tunnel span

    Development and Performance Evaluation of a Very Low-Cost UAV-Lidar System for Forestry Applications

    Accurate and repeated forest inventory data are critical to understand forest ecosystem processes and manage forest resources. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-borne light detection and ranging (lidar) systems have demonstrated effectiveness at deriving forest inventory attributes. However, their high cost has largely prevented them from being used in large-scale forest applications. Here, we developed a very low-cost UAV lidar system that integrates a recently emerged DJI Livox MID40 laser scanner (~$600 USD) and evaluated its capability in estimating both individual tree-level (i.e., tree height) and plot-level forest inventory attributes (i.e., canopy cover, gap fraction, and leaf area index (LAI)). Moreover, a comprehensive comparison was conducted between the developed DJI Livox system and four other UAV lidar systems equipped with high-end laser scanners (i.e., RIEGL VUX-1 UAV, RIEGL miniVUX-1 UAV, HESAI Pandar40, and Velodyne Puck LITE). Using these instruments, we surveyed a coniferous forest site and a broadleaved forest site, with tree densities ranging from 500 trees/ha to 3000 trees/ha, with 52 UAV flights at different flying height and speed combinations. The developed DJI Livox MID40 system effectively captured the upper canopy structure and terrain surface information at both forest sites. The estimated individual tree height was highly correlated with field measurements (coniferous site: R2 = 0.96, root mean squared error/RMSE = 0.59 m; broadleaved site: R2 = 0.70, RMSE = 1.63 m). The plot-level estimates of canopy cover, gap fraction, and LAI corresponded well with those derived from the high-end RIEGL VUX-1 UAV system but tended to have systematic biases in areas with medium to high canopy densities. Overall, the DJI Livox MID40 system performed comparably to the RIEGL miniVUX-1 UAV, HESAI Pandar40, and Velodyne Puck LITE systems in the coniferous site and to the Velodyne Puck LITE system in the broadleaved forest. Despite its apparent weaknesses of limited sensitivity to low-intensity returns and narrow field of view, we believe that the very low-cost system developed by this study can largely broaden the potential use of UAV lidar in forest inventory applications. This study also provides guidance for the selection of the appropriate UAV lidar system and flight specifications for forest research and management
