Mariana de Neoburgo en Toledo

The death of the childless Charles II of Spain caused the election to the Spanish throne of Philip V, grandson of Louis XIV of France. His arrival to Spain was preceded by the exile to Toledo of the queen dowager Maria Anna of Neuburg. She lived in the city for five years and a half and this altered many aspects of its institutions (the Cathedral Chapter, the Toledo City Council) and of the inhabitants themselves. This paper examines both the positive and negative aspects in the social, political and economic impact of Maria Anna’s exile in this city.La muerte sin descendencia del rey Carlos II trajo como consecuencia la elección de Felipe V, nieto de Luis XIV de Francia, como nuevo monarca de España. Su llegada estuvo precedida del exilio de la reina viuda, doña Mariana de Neoburgo, a Toledo. La estancia de esta durante cinco años y medio en la ciudad Imperial, alteró la vida de sus instituciones (cabildo catedralicio y Ayuntamiento) y del pueblo tanto desde el punto de vista social como político y económico. Su incidencia positiva o negativa en el curso de la vida capitalina es lo que se trata de analizar en este artículo

Dirección escolar e innovación educativa

En este artículo el autor reflexiona en torno a las características y las condiciones que debe tenerla dirección escolar para que el proyecto educativo que se esté llevando a cabo resulte innovador y sea un proceso dinámico y democrático. Resalta la importancia de la función directiva y manifiesta su valoración sobre la influencia de la dirección en el buen funcionamiento de la institución. Plantea cuestiones referidas a los directores escolares y que condicionan el proceso de implicación en la transformación de la escuela y, por último, discute algunas de las dificultades que están obstaculizando el ejercicio de la dirección escolar como un proceso democrático e innovador. Entre ellas destaca el individualismo, la rutinización, la falta de tiempo, el desinterés, la impaciencia y la meritocracia._______________________________ In this article the author reflects on the features and conditions that must have the school direction to have an innovator, dynamic and democratic educational project. The importance of the managing is thrown into relief and a clear value is given to the influence that represents the direction in a good functioning of the institution. This article proposes questions about school directors, and how these are conditioning the process of implication in the transformation of school, and finally, it discusses some difficulties that are hindering the work of school direction as a democratic and innovator process. La evaluación es un fenómeno que permite poner sobre el tapete todas nuestras concepciones. Más que un proceso de naturaleza técnica y aséptica es una actividad penetrada de dimensiones psicológicas, políticas y morales. Por el modo de practicar la evaluación podríamos llegar a las concepciones que tiene el profesional que la práctica sobre la sociedad, las instituciones de enseñanza, el aprendizaje y la comunicación interpersonal..

Simulated evolution applied to study the genetic code optimality using a model of codon reassignments

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As the canonical code is not universal, different theories about its origin and organization have appeared. The optimization or level of adaptation of the canonical genetic code was measured taking into account the harmful consequences resulting from point mutations leading to the replacement of one amino acid for another. There are two basic theories to measure the level of optimization: the statistical approach, which compares the canonical genetic code with many randomly generated alternative ones, and the engineering approach, which compares the canonical code with the best possible alternative.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we used a genetic algorithm to search for better adapted hypothetical codes and as a method to guess the difficulty in finding such alternative codes, allowing to clearly situate the canonical code in the fitness landscape. This novel proposal of the use of evolutionary computing provides a new perspective in the open debate between the use of the statistical approach, which postulates that the genetic code conserves amino acid properties far better than expected from a random code, and the engineering approach, which tends to indicate that the canonical genetic code is still far from optimal. We used two models of hypothetical codes: one that reflects the known examples of codon reassignment and the model most used in the two approaches which reflects the current genetic code translation table. Although the standard code is far from a possible optimum considering both models, when the more realistic model of the codon reassignments was used, the evolutionary algorithm had more difficulty to overcome the efficiency of the canonical genetic code.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Simulated evolution clearly reveals that the canonical genetic code is far from optimal regarding its optimization. Nevertheless, the efficiency of the canonical code increases when mistranslations are taken into account with the two models, as indicated by the fact that the best possible codes show the patterns of the standard genetic code. Our results are in accordance with the postulates of the engineering approach and indicate that the main arguments of the statistical approach are not enough to its assertion of the extreme efficiency of the canonical genetic code.</p
