Domain wall description of superconductivity
In the present work we shall address the issue of electrical conductivity in
superconductors in the perspective of superconducting domain wall solutions in
the realm of field theory. We take our set up made out of a dynamical complex
scalar field coupled to gauge field to be responsible for superconductivity and
an extra scalar real field that plays the role of superconducting domain walls.
The temperature of the system is interpreted through the fact that the soliton
following accelerating orbits is a Rindler observer experiencing a thermal
bath.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, Latex. Version to appear in PL
Electrical methods of determining soil moisture content
The electrical permittivity of soils is a useful indicator of soil moisture content. Two methods of determining the permittivity profile in soils are examined. A method due to Becher is found to be inapplicable to this situation. A method of Slichter, however, appears to be feasible. The results of Slichter's method are extended to the proposal of an instrument design that could measure available soil moisture profile (percent available soil moisture as a function of depth) from a surface measurement to an expected resolution of 10 to 20 cm
Controlled Shock Shells and Intracluster Fusion Reactions in the Explosion of Large Clusters
The ion phase-space dynamics in the Coulomb explosion of very large ( atoms) deuterium clusters can be tailored using two consecutive
laser pulses with different intensities and an appropriate time delay. For
suitable sets of laser parameters (intensities and delay), large-scale shock
shells form during the explosion, thus highly increasing the probability of
fusion reactions within the single exploding clusters. In order to analyze the
ion dynamics and evaluate the intracluster reaction rate, a one-dimensional
theory is used, which approximately accounts for the electron expulsion from
the clusters. It is found that, for very large clusters (initial radius
100 nm), and optimal laser parameters, the intracluster fusion yield becomes
comparable to the intercluster fusion yield. The validity of the results is
confirmed with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Physical Review
A new data reduction scheme to obtain the mode II fracture properties of Pinus Pinaster wood
In this work a numerical study of the End Notched Flexure (ENF) specimen was performed
in order to obtain the mode II critical strain energy released rate (GIIc) of a Pinus pinaster wood in the RL crack propagation system. The analysis included interface finite elements and a progressive damage
model based on indirect use of Fracture Mechanics.
The difficulties in monitoring the crack length during an experimental ENF test and the inconvenience of performing separate tests in order to obtain the elastic properties are well known. To avoid these
problems, a new data reduction scheme based on the equivalent crack concept was proposed and validated. This new data reduction scheme, the Compliance-Based Beam Method (CBBM), does not require crack measurements during ENF tests and additional tests to obtain elastic properties.FCT - POCTI/EME/45573/200
Finite element analysis of the ECT test on mode III interlaminar fracture of carbon-epoxy composite laminates
In this work a parametric study of the Edge Crack Torsion (ECT) specimen was performed
in order to maximize the mode III component (GIII) of the strain energy release rate for carbon-epoxy laminates.
A three-dimensional finite element analysis of the ECT test was conducted considering a
[90/0/(+45/-45)2/(-45/+45)2/0/90]S lay-up. The main objective was to define an adequate geometry to obtain an almost pure mode III at crack front. The geometrical parameters studied were specimen dimensions, distance between pins and size of the initial crack.
The numerical results demonstrated that the ratio between the specimen length and the initial crack length had a significant effect on the strain energy release rate distributions. In almost all of the tested
configurations, a mode II component occurred near the edges but it did not interfere significantly with the dominant mode III state.FCT - POCTI/EME/45573/200
Formation of Dark Matter Haloes in a Homogeneous Dark Energy Universe
Several independent cosmological tests have shown evidences that the energy
density of the Universe is dominated by a dark energy component, which cause
the present accelerated expansion. The large scale structure formation can be
used to probe dark energy models, and the mass function of dark matter haloes
is one of the best statistical tools to perform this study. We present here a
statistical analysis of mass functions of galaxies under a homogeneous dark
energy model, proposed in the work of Percival (2005), using an observational
flux-limited X-ray cluster survey, and CMB data from WMAP. We compare, in our
analysis, the standard Press-Schechter (PS) approach (where a Gaussian
distribution is used to describe the primordial density fluctuation field of
the mass function), and the PL (Power Law) mass function (where we apply a
nonextensive q-statistical distribution to the primordial density field). We
conclude that the PS mass function cannot explain at the same time the X-ray
and the CMB data (even at 99% confidence level), and the PS best fit dark
energy equation of state parameter is , which is distant from the
cosmological constant case. The PL mass function provides better fits to the
HIFLUGCS X-ray galaxy data and the CMB data; we also note that the
parameter is very sensible to modifications in the PL free parameter, ,
suggesting that the PL mass function could be a powerful tool to constrain dark
energy models.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Latex. Accepted for publication in the
