The meaning of internationalism in Angola:Were the Cubans “exporting” the revolution or becoming “the good colonizers”?

Between 1975 and 1991, Cuba deployed to Angola more than 300 000 military personnel (of which some 2 000 lost their lives), and around 50 000 civilians worked as doctors, nurses, teachers or engineers. The cultural impact of the presence of Cubans in the first half of the civil war in post-independence Angola marked deeply a whole generation of men and women and is still pretty much under-researched. In this article, I discuss the meaning of internationalism in Angola for Cuban society, resorting to sources (literature, poetry, testimony and political speeches) that have been addressing the Angolan conflict and analysing the meaning of Cuba’s internationalist policy stemming from both Cuba and abroad. By showing the mobilizing and activist character of the Cuban experience in Angola, through accounts on internationalism, my argument is that, rather than imposing themselves in a foreign nation, the Cubans were attempting to incorporate Angola in their own national narrative, in the sense of Eric Hobsbawm’s ‘‘ invention of tradition’’.«Exporter » la révolution ou devenir de «bons colonisateurs » ? Ribeiro Raquel. Preheating in Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation

We study how the universe reheats following an era of chaotic Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation, and compare the rate of particle production with that in models based on canonical kinetic terms. Particle production occurs through non-perturbative resonances whose structure is modified by the nonlinearities of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We investigate these modifications and show that the reheating process may be efficient. We estimate the initial temperature of the subsequent hot, radiation-dominated phase.Comment: 23 page

Conclusão: O consumo de frutose parece ter efeitos adversos em quase todos os componentes da SM.Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is considered a constellation of cardiometabolic risk factors including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance (IR), high blood pressure (hypertension), glucose intolerance, abdominal obesity and NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fructose is considered one of the causes for the increased incidence of this syndrome. Objective: To understand the impact of fructose intake in MS components. Methods: A literature review was conducted through surveys in Pubmed database. The survey took place between March and June 2015 and the terms used were "fructose, metabolic syndrome," "metabolic effects of fructose" and "fructose, NAFLD." They were included in this systematic literature review 23 articles. Results: Fructose consumption has impacted almost all components of MS and it is associated with increases in plasma triglycerides and blood glucose, and decreased insulin sensitivity and HDL cholesterol concentrations. In turn, there were no significant effects with respect to blood pressure. Conclusion: The fructose consumption seems to have adverse effects on almost all components of MS

ABSTRACT: Globalization is a major present-day issue. The controversy that it creates among experts bears on all the dimensions of the phenomenon and it raises antagonistic attitudes especially in relation to its consequences. The present study aims at understanding lay people’s opinions on globalization, namely with regard to the positive and negative consequences of the phenomenon on different areas of social life. Thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with students and professionals from northern Portugal, which were analyzed by means of the program for textual data analysis ALCESTE. The program classified 79.05% of the gathered material into four classes, evidencing four important dimensions of globalization: Market and Culture, Science and Technology, Environment, and Politics and Openness, dimensions that integrate positive and negative aspects. With regard to the differences between students and professionals, the analysis indicates that students particularly stress the consequences of globalization on technology and the environment, while professionals emphasize, above all, its political or economic consequences. More generally, the results highlight that there are different processes of globalization with multiple repercussions and unequal consequences on social life.
