    Get PDF
Herbal, traditional drugs are frequently used in therapeutics; more often their chief principles are employed in a more specific manner. Theseprinciples are known as derivatives or extractions. Centella asiatica, Cyperus rotundus, and Emblica officinalis alcoholic and aqueous extractwere evaluated for the hair growth properties using albino rats. The hair growth formulation was formulated as hair oil and applied topicallyon shaved skin of rats. Primary skin irritation test, hair length, hair density test were performed. The hair growth-promoting efficacies wereevaluated at 0 day, 10 days, 15 days, and 20 days after the application through the hair re-growth area significant hair growth was observed. Theresult revealed that the hair growth activity of each drug was found proportional to the concentration range tested and compared with standard(2% minoxidil ethanolic solution) by an enlargement of follicular size and prolongation of the anagen phase. It holds the promise of potent herbalalternative for minoxidil. Excellent results of hair growth were seen in formulation prepared by cloth pouch decoction method of oils preparationtechnique. Keywords: Centella asiatica, Cyperus rotundus, Emblica officinalis, Hair oil, Hair growth, Hair length, % minoxidil

    Get PDF
Background: Hypothyroidism is the most common functional disorder of the thyroid gland. It is a hypometabolic clinical state resulting from inadequate production of thyroid hormones for prolonged periods. The prevalence of this disease in India is 6% and more than 10 million cases per year are reported. It is a multisystemic disorder which has a wide range of clinical symptoms. This condition is not mentioned in Ayurveda classics by any specified name. In Ayurveda, determining the elements that contribute to Samprapti is essential in developing a treatment plan. Hence, the current study attempts to evaluate the Samprapti Ghatakas and as a result, formulate probable Samprapti. Objectives: To study and explore the Samprapti Ghatakas of hypothyroidism and to propose possible Samprapti. Methods: The study was conducted in 100 cases of hypothyroidism between the age of 16 to 70 years. A case proforma was prepared which includes history taking, physical signs and symptoms and required examination. The calculations were done in Microsoft excel and the values obtained were assessed on the basis of percentage of individual parameters in relation with Samprapti Ghatakas of hypothyroidism. Results: Kapha and Vata are the main Doshas involved in the Samprapti. Important Dooshyas are Rasa, Meda. Agni involved is Dhatwagni and the disease is caused primarily due to Dhatwagnimandya. Udakavaha, Annavaha, Medovaha, Swedavaha, Purishavaha, Rasavaha are the main Srotas involved with Sanga type of Srotodushti. Udbhava Sthana can be considered as Amashaya; Sanchara Sthana, Vyakta Sthana and Adhishtana is Sarva Shareera. All the three Rogamarga are involved

Solving kk-means on High-dimensional Big Data

In recent years, there have been major efforts to develop data stream algorithms that process inputs in one pass over the data with little memory requirement. For the kk-means problem, this has led to the development of several (1+ε)(1+\varepsilon)-approximations (under the assumption that kk is a constant), but also to the design of algorithms that are extremely fast in practice and compute solutions of high accuracy. However, when not only the length of the stream is high but also the dimensionality of the input points, then current methods reach their limits. We propose two algorithms, piecy and piecy-mr that are based on the recently developed data stream algorithm BICO that can process high dimensional data in one pass and output a solution of high quality. While piecy is suited for high dimensional data with a medium number of points, piecy-mr is meant for high dimensional data that comes in a very long stream. We provide an extensive experimental study to evaluate piecy and piecy-mr that shows the strength of the new algorithms.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, published at the 14th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms - SEA 201

The banana (Musa acuminata Colla) is considered as an important crop plant due to its high economic value as good dietary source. Here, we analyze the genetic relationship of four different banana varieties that are cultivated in south India. Random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) fingerprinting of these banana varieties (Grand Naine, Red Banana, Nendran and Rasthali) carried out by three primers (OPA-19, OPB-18, OPD-16) led to DNA amplification. 43.47% of the amplification products weremonomorphic (common to all the genotypes), whereas 30.43% were unique, but only 26.08% revealed the relationship between these genotypes

Purpose: To synthesize and characterize the dextran conjugates of suprofen and flurbiprofen, and also evaluate their biological activities. Methods: Suprofen and flurbiprofen were individually reacted with carbonyldiimidazole to form acylimidazole, which, in turn, was reacted with the dextran of varying molecular weight (40 000, 60 000, and 110 000) to form drug-dextran conjugates. The structures of the synthesized dextran conjugates were confirmed by IR and NMR spectroscopy. In vitro hydrolysis of the conjugates were studied in buffer solutions (pH 7.4 and 9.0) and 80% human plasma (pH 7.4). The analgesic and antipyretic activities, aswell as the ulcerogenic index of the conjugates were also evaluated in albino rats. Results: The mean degree of substitution of flurbiprofen and suprofen was between 8.0 to 9.5 % and 7.5 to 9.0 %, respectively. In vitro hydrolysis studies on the conjugates indicate faster hydrolysis at pH9.0 than in pH 7.4 buffer solution and 80% human plasma (pH 7.4) with the process following First order kinetics. The analgesic activity of flurbiprofen-dextran conjugate (FD-110) suprofen-dextran conjugate(SD-110) was 64.23 and 41.50% which compare well with those of their parent drugs - flurbiprofen (72.60%) and suprofen (44.30%). Similar findings were made in respect of the antipyretic activity. Bothflurbiprofen and suprofen showed deep ulceration, swelling and high intensity perforation in the gastric mucosa after seven days administration of flurbiprofen and suprofen with the ulcerogenic indices of29.69 and 31.0 respectively, cpmpare with 5.88 and 6.06 for FD-110 and SD-110, respectively. Conclusion: Dextran can be employed as a pro-moiety or carrier for the delivery of flurbiprofen and suprofen and showed comparable analgesic and antipyretic activities with the parent drugs but with lower ulcerogenic indices

Metabolism of 2-Chloro-4-Nitrophenol in a Gram Negative Bacterium, Burkholderia sp. RKJ 800

    Get PDF
A 2-Chloro-4-nitrophenol (2C4NP) degrading bacterial strain designated as RKJ 800 was isolated from a pesticide contaminated site of India by enrichment method and utilized 2C4NP as sole source of carbon and energy. The stoichiometric amounts of nitrite and chloride ions were detected during the degradation of 2C4NP. On the basis of thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, chlorohydroquinone (CHQ) and hydroquinone (HQ) were identified as major metabolites of the degradation pathway of 2C4NP. Manganese dependent HQ dioxygenase activity was observed in the crude extract of 2C4NP induced cells of the strain RKJ 800 that suggested the cleavage of the HQ to γ-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequencing, strain RKJ 800 was identified as a member of genus Burkholderia. Our studies clearly showed that Burkholderia sp. RKJ 800 degraded 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol via hydroquinone pathway. The pathway identified in a gram negative bacterium, Burkholderia sp. strain RKJ 800 was differed from previously reported 2C4NP degradation pathway in another gram-negative Burkholderia sp. SJ98. This is the first report of the formation of CHQ and HQ in the degradation of 2C4NP by any gram-negative bacteria. Laboratory-scale soil microcosm studies showed that strain RKJ 800 is a suitable candidate for bioremediation of 2C4NP contaminated sites

Near-Infrared Super Resolution Imaging with Metallic Nanoshell Particle Chain Array

We propose a near-infrared super resolution imaging system without a lens or a mirror but with an array of metallic nanoshell particle chain. The imaging array can plasmonically transfer the near-field components of dipole sources in the incoherent and coherent manners and the super resolution images can be reconstructed in the output plane. By tunning the parameters of the metallic nanoshell particle, the plasmon resonance band of the isolate nanoshell particle red-shifts to the near-infrared region. The near-infrared super resolution images are obtained subsequently. We calculate the field intensity distribution at the different planes of imaging process using the finite element method and find that the array has super resolution imaging capability at near-infrared wavelengths. We also show that the image formation highly depends on the coherence of the dipole sources and the image-array distance.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
