We report the discovery of TOI-561, a multiplanet system in the galactic thick disk that contains a rocky, ultra-short-period planet. This bright (V = 10.2) star hosts three small transiting planets identified in photometry from the NASA TESS mission: TOI-561 b (TOI-561.02, P = 0.44 days, Rp = 1.45 ± 0.11 R⊕), c (TOI-561.01, P = 10.8 days, Rp = 2.90 ± 0.13 R⊕), and d (TOI-561.03, P = 16.3 days, Rp = 2.32 ± 0.16 R⊕). The star is chemically ([Fe/H] = −0.41 ± 0.05, [α/Fe] = +0.23 ± 0.05) and kinematically consistent with the galactic thick-disk population, making TOI-561 one of the oldest (10 ± 3 Gyr) and most metal-poor planetary systems discovered yet. We dynamically confirm planets b and c with radial velocities from the W. M. Keck Observatory High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. Planet b has a mass and density of 3.2 ± 0.8 M⊕ and 5.5−1.6+2.0{5.5}_{-1.6}^{+2.0}g cm−3, consistent with a rocky composition. Its lower-than-average density is consistent with an iron-poor composition, although an Earth-like iron-to-silicates ratio is not ruled out. Planet c is 7.0 ± 2.3 M⊕ and 1.6 ± 0.6 g cm−3, consistent with an interior rocky core overlaid with a low-mass volatile envelope. Several attributes of the photometry for planet d (which we did not detect dynamically) complicate the analysis, but we vet the planet with high-contrast imaging, ground-based photometric follow-up, and radial velocities. TOI-561 b is the first rocky world around a galactic thick-disk star confirmed with radial velocities and one of the best rocky planets for thermal emission studies

    Multiperspective analysis of erosion tolerance

    Get PDF
Erosion tolerance is the most multidisciplinary field of soil erosion research. Scientists have shown lack in ability to adequately analyze the huge list of variables that influence soil loss tolerance definitions. For these the perspectives of erosion made by farmers, environmentalists, society and politicians have to be considered simultaneously. Partial and biased definitions of erosion tolerance may explain not only the polemic nature of the currently suggested values but also, in part, the nonadoption of the desired levels of erosion control. To move towards a solution, considerable changes would have to occur on how this topic is investigated, especially among scientists, who would have to change methods and strategies and extend the perspective of research out of the boundaries of the physical processes and the frontiers of the academy. A more effective integration and communication with the society and farmers, to learn about their perspective of erosion and a multidisciplinary approach, integrating soil, social, economic and environmental sciences are essential for improved erosion tolerance definitions. In the opinion of the authors, soil erosion research is not moving in this direction and a better understanding of erosion tolerance is not to be expected in the near future

We present the discovery and characterization of five hot and warm Jupiters - TOI-628 b (TIC 281408474; HD 288842), TOI-640 b (TIC 147977348), TOI-1333 b (TIC 395171208, BD+47 3521A), TOI-1478 b (TIC 409794137), and TOI-1601 b (TIC 139375960) - based on data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The five planets were identified from the full-frame images and were confirmed through a series of photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations by the TESS Follow-up Observing Program Working Group. The planets are all Jovian size (R P = 1.01-1.77 R J) and have masses that range from 0.85 to 6.33 M J. The host stars of these systems have F and G spectral types (5595 ≤ T eff ≤ 6460 K) and are all relatively bright (9.5 1.7 R J, possibly a result of its host star's evolution) and resides on an orbit with a period longer than 5 days. TOI-628 b is the most massive, hot Jupiter discovered to date by TESS with a measured mass of 6.31-0.30+0.28 M J and a statistically significant, nonzero orbital eccentricity of e = 0.074-0.022+0.021. This planet would not have had enough time to circularize through tidal forces from our analysis, suggesting that it might be remnant eccentricity from its migration. The longest-period planet in this sample, TOI-1478 b (P = 10.18 days), is a warm Jupiter in a circular orbit around a near-solar analog. NASA's TESS mission is continuing to increase the sample of well-characterized hot and warm Jupiters, complementing its primary mission goals

Electrospun Scaffolds Functionalized with a Hydrogen Sulfide Donor Stimulate Angiogenesis

    No full text
Tissue-engineered constructs are currently limited by the lack of vascularization necessary for the survival and integration of implanted tissues. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous signaling gas (gasotransmitter), has been recently reported as a promising alternative to growth factors to mediate and promote angiogenesis in low concentrations. Yet, sustained delivery of H2S remains a challenge. Herein, we have developed angiogenic scaffolds by covalent attachment of an H2S donor to a polycaprolactone (PCL) electrospun scaffold. These scaffolds were engineered to include azide functional groups (on 1, 5, or 10% of the PCL end groups) and were modified using a straightforward click reaction with an alkyne-functionalized N-thiocarboxyanhydride (alkynyl-NTA). This created H2S-releasing scaffolds that rely on NTA ring-opening in water followed by conversion of released carbonyl sulfide into H2S. These functionalized scaffolds showed dose-dependent release of H2S based on the amount of NTA functionality within the scaffold. The NTA-functionalized fibrous scaffolds supported human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation, formed more confluent endothelial monolayers, and facilitated the formation of tight cell-cell junctions to a greater extent than unfunctionalized scaffolds. Covalent conjugation of H2S donors to scaffolds not only promotes HUVEC proliferation in vitro, but also increases neovascularization in ovo, as observed in the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay. NTA-functionalized scaffolds provide localized control over vascularization through the sustained delivery of a powerful endogenous angiogenic agent, which should be further explored to promote angiogenesis in tissue engineering

Functional Assessment and Behavioral Treatment of Skin Picking in a Teenage Girl With Prader-Willi Syndrome

    No full text
Item does not contain fulltextSkin picking is common in individuals with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) but few treatment studies exist. This study reports the successful functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and treatment of skin picking in a 16-year-old female with PWS. A treatment package based on FBA results consisted of differential reinforcement for alternative and incompatible behavior, self-evaluation of progress, and reinforcement for weekly progress and participation in treatment. Pictures of wounds resulting from skin picking were taken during treatment. A total of 30 pictures were randomly selected and shown in a random order to 16 individuals unfamiliar with the study. The individuals then rated severity of the wounds displayed in the pictures. Pearson’s χ2 was used to assess changes in the ratings of severity during the course of treatment, and significant results indicate improvement over the course of intervention, χ 2(1) = 246.6, p < .001. This study adds to the very small literature on treatment of skin picking in people with PWS
