Corrosion Resistance Studies of Austenitic Stainless Steel Grades in Molten Zinc-Aluminum Alloy Galvanizing Bath
The corrosion inhibition performance and
mechanical behavior of galvanized and heat-treated four
newly developed austenitic stainless steel grades and type
316L austenitic stainless steel for application as sink rolls
in galvanizing baths of 0.14–0.21 wt.% aluminum was
investigated and compared through immersion corrosion
test to determine the weight loss between 168 and 504 h,
tensile test, and Charpy impact test. The delta ferrite content
of the test samples was observed and estimated
through optical microscopy, feritscope, and ONRL diagram.
Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive
spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface
microstructure, morphology, and chemical composition of
the galvanized coating of the steel samples. Result showed
that only two of the newly developed stainless steel compositions
were selected for use in fabrication of galvanizing
hardware based on the comparisons of corrosion and
mechanical performances of tested alloy
High-throughput screening of encapsulated islets using wide-field lens-free on-chip imaging
Islet microencapsulation is a promising solution to diabetes treatment, but
its quality control based on manual microscopic inspection is extremely
low-throughput, highly variable and laborious. This study presents a
high-throughput islet-encapsulation quality screening system based on lens-free
on-chip imaging with a wide field-of-view of 18.15 cm^2, which is more than 100
times larger than that of a lens-based optical microscope, enabling it to image
and analyze ~8,000 microcapsules in a single frame. Custom-written image
reconstruction and processing software provides the user with clinically
important information, such as microcapsule count, size, intactness, and
information on whether each capsule contains an islet. This high-throughput and
cost-effective platform can be useful for researchers to develop better
encapsulation protocols as well as perform quality control prior to
transplantation
First record of the red shrimp, Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) (Decapoda: Aristeidae) from the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey
A female specimen of the deep-water red shrimp, Aristeus antennatus(Risso, 1816) was caught at depths of between 550 m and 670 m during 2005 by trawling off the Marmaris coast. A. antennatus is a species known to inhabit only the Levantine Sea coast of Turkey. This paper is on the first record of the species along the southern Aegean Sea coast of Turke
QuaSI: Quantile Sparse Image Prior for Spatio-Temporal Denoising of Retinal OCT Data
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution and non-invasive
3D imaging of the human retina but is inherently impaired by speckle noise.
This paper introduces a spatio-temporal denoising algorithm for OCT data on a
B-scan level using a novel quantile sparse image (QuaSI) prior. To remove
speckle noise while preserving image structures of diagnostic relevance, we
implement our QuaSI prior via median filter regularization coupled with a Huber
data fidelity model in a variational approach. For efficient energy
minimization, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)
scheme using a linearization of median filtering. Our spatio-temporal method
can handle both, denoising of single B-scans and temporally consecutive
B-scans, to gain volumetric OCT data with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio. Our
algorithm based on 4 B-scans only achieved comparable performance to averaging
13 B-scans and outperformed other current denoising methods.Comment: submitted to MICCAI'1
Effects of olive cake meal on serum constituents and fatty acid levels in breast muscle of Japanese quail
This study was aimed at determining the effects of various levels of dietary olive cake meal (OCM) on certain blood parameters and breast muscle fatty acid and cholesterol levels. For this purpose, 400 day-old Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) chicks of both sexes were randomly assigned to four trial groups, each including five replicates of 20 animals. The quail were fed on a maize and soybean meal-based basal diet supplemented with 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% of OCM for six weeks. Dietary supplementation with 5% and 7.5% of OCM decreased total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the blood serum, and increased cholesterol levels in the breast muscle. Dietary supplementation with various levels of OCM decreased saturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid levels, and increased monounsaturated fatty acid and total unsaturated fatty acid levels in the breast muscle. As a result, it was concluded that, olive cake meal, which contains a high level of olive oil, could be incorporated in poultry feed at a level of 5%, owing to its beneficial effects of decreasing serum LDL cholesterol, which plays a major role in the aetiology of cardiovascular diseases, and in reducing saturated fatty acid levels in breast muscle
