    294-296The occurrence of two species of marine tube dwelling diatoms was reported from the water samples collected from Phoenix Bay, South Andaman. The recorded species were Navicula mollis and Navicula rusticensis. The morphometric dimensions of these two species were also given. Along with the tube dwelling diatoms, co-habitant diatoms were also observed in the present study. This was the first report of tube dwelling diatoms from Indian waters particularly from Andaman Islands

    Role of ABCB1 C3435T variant in response to antiepileptic drugs in epilepsy: a review

    Over-expression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), the encoded product of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC), sub-family B, member 1 (ABCB1/MDR1) gene, plays an important role in mediating multidrug resistance to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in about 30 of patients with epilepsy. Genetic variation may in part explain inter-individual differences in phenotype-genotype relationships in the pharmacological response of epilepsy patients to AEDs. The synonymous C3435T polymorphism is one of the most common allelic variants in the ABCB1/MDR1 gene, proposed in the causation of refractory epilepsy. Many studies have shown the relationship between C3435T polymorphism and refractoriness to AEDs in epilepsy. However, there is controversy between the findings of various studies, that is, whether ABCB1/MDR1 C3435T gene polymorphism is associated with response to AEDs in epilepsy patients. This review provides a background and discusses the results of investigations on possible confounding factors affecting the interpretation and implementation of association studies in this area

    This contribution provides an overview of the marine capture fisheries off the coast of Karnataka State, India. It covers the main fisheries and fishing gears, production trends (by main species /groups and gears), assessment results and fisheries management. Marine fisheries production in the State increased from about 57,000 t/year during the 1950s to a peak of about 250,000 in 1989, declining to about 150,000 t/year by 1995. Substantive changes have been noted in dominant gears and species groups contributing to the catch between 1980-84 and 1990-95. Results of assessments indicate that many commercially important stocks are overfished, thus requiring a reduction in fishing effort

    A fermentative approach to ameliorating solid waste challenges within food and hospitality industry

    Solid wastes emanating from food and hospitality domains constitute environmental challenges and their holistic management remained inevitable. Solid state bioconversion process involving mixed culture of microbes was conducted for 7 days. Bio-product synthesis by the microorganisms and bio-degradation extent of fruit peels’ components were analyzed for chemical and structural changes. Chemical analysis showed improved protein enrichment when microbes were mixed together at different ratios (141.18 mg/g) compared with 4 cm apart (115.62 mg/g). Through substrate reformulation, fermentable sugar composition rose to 500.99 mg/g and protein enrichment increased to 160.68 mg/g, cellulase activity was 1.33±0.04 units/ml and α-amylase activity of 112.46±0.28 units/ml was synthesized. Analysis of reformulated substrates indicated presence of more metabolizable sugar while FT-IR analysis revealed immense modifications and consumption of complex sugars (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) by selected filamentous fung

    PROCESS MODELLING AND DEBOTTLENECKING STUDY OF A VACCINE PRODUCTION

    ABSTRACT: The main objective of this research work was to model and optimise the production of a locally-developed Infectious Coryza (IC) vaccine. The simulation work was performed using a commercially available batch process simulator SuperPro Designer v5.5. Six debottlenecking schemes were analysed using throughput analysis and cost to benefit ratio (CBR) when the annual production was set to increase by 100%. Based on the economic analysis, the selected debottlenecking scheme has an annual predicted revenue of USD 240 million, with a gross margin of 9.13% and a return on investment (ROI) of 46.12%. In addition, the payback period of the selected scheme is estimated to be within three years.  ABSTRAK: Objektif utama dalam penyelidikan ini adalah untuk memodelkan dan mengoptimumkan hasil pembuatan vaksin tempatan Coryza berjangkit. Kerja simulasi ini dijalankan menggunakan alat simulasi Super Pro Designer v5.5. Sebanyak enam (6) skema khusus diujikaji menggunakan analisis pemprosesan dan kos kepada nisbah faedah (CBR) apabila pembuatan tahunan meningkat kepada 100%. Berdasarkan analisis ekonomi yang telah dilakukan, sesuatu skema khusus yang dipilih mempunyai keuntungan sebanyak USD 240 juta dengan margin kasar 9.13% dan pulangan atas pelaburan (ROI) sebanyak 46.12%.     Evaluation of production cross-sections for theranostic 67Cu radionuclide via proton-induced nuclear reaction on 68Zn target

    Copper–67 (T1/2 = 61.83 h, ) is a promising radionuclide for theranostic applications especially in radio immunotherapy. However, one of the main drawbacks for its application is related to its limited availability. Various nuclear reaction routes investigated in the last years can result in 67Cu production, although the use of proton beams is the method of choice taken into account in this work. The goal of this work is a revision of the cross-sections aimed at 67Cu yield, which were evaluated for the 68Zn(p,2p)67Cu reaction route up to 80 MeV proton energy. A well-defined statistical procedure, i.e., the Simultaneous Evaluation on KALMAN (SOK), combined with the least-squares concept, was used to obtain the evaluated data together with the covariance matrix. The obtained evaluated data were also compared to predictions provided by the nuclear reaction model codes TALYS and EMPIRE, and a partial agreement among them has been found. These data may be useful for both existing and potential applications in nuclear medicine, to achieve an improvement and validation of the various nuclear reaction models, and may also find applications in other fields (e.g., activation analysis and thin layer activation)

    Phylogeography of the pharaoh cuttle Sepia pharaonis based on partial mitochondrial 16S sequence data

    The pharaoh cuttle Sepia pharaonis Ehrenberg, 1831 (Mollusca: Cephalopoda: Sepiida) is a broadly distributed species of substantial fisheries importance found from east Africa to southern Japan. Little is known about S. pharaonis phylogeography, but evidence from morphology and reproductive biology suggests that Sepia pharaonis is actually a complex of at least three species. To evaluate this possibility, we collected tissue samples from Sepia pharaonis from throughout its range. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mitochondrial 16S sequences from these samples reveal five distinct clades: a Gulf of Aden/Red Sea clade, a northern Australia clade, a Persian Gulf/Arabian Sea clade, a western Pacific clade (Gulf of Thailand and Taiwan) and an India/Andaman Sea clade. Phylogenetic analyses including several Sepia species show that S. pharaonis sensu lato may not be monophyletic. We suggest that "S. pharaonis" may consist of up to five species, but additional data will be required to fully clarify relationships within the S. pharaonis complex
