    The Changing Face of Veterinary Practice: A Special Focus on Rural America

    Rural and food animal veterinary practice is evolving in response to changes in society, veterinary student demographics, and business opportunities available in the 21st century. The gravitation of veterinarians toward metropolitan areas has created a perception of under-serviced animal health needs in rural communities. Many rural communities are heavily reliant on agriculture; therefore, this perceived need for veterinarians influences the food animal industry as a whole. Veterinary colleges have changed in response to the increased number of students who are interested in companion animal medicine. These changes have resulted in diminished large animal content in the professional curricula, attrition of the number of faculty teaching food animal medicine, increases in the number of faculty dedicated to small animal curriculum, and an overwhelming sense that the veterinary program is centered around training in preparation for a career in companion animal practice. A multitude of factors likely contribute to the continued gravitation of veterinary students toward small animal practice. Veterinary colleges must strive to maintain a balanced, open-minded view of the profession so that students have an equal opportunity to choose a path that best suits their desires and interests

    We study the dynamics of the phase behavior of a polymer blend in the presence of shear flow. By adopting a two fluid picture and using a generalization of the concept of material derivative, we construct kinetic equations that describe the phase behavior of polymer blends in the presence of external flow. A phenomenological form for the shear modulus for the blend is proposed. The study indicates that a nonlinear dependence of the shear modulus of the blend on the volume fraction of one of the species is crucial for a shift in the stability line to be induced by shear flow.Comment: 16 pages, late

    High-frequency performance of Schottky source/drain silicon pMOS devices

    A radio-frequency performance of 85-nm gate-length p-type Schottky barrier (SB) with PtSi source/drain materials is investigated. The impact of silicidation annealing temperature on the high-frequency behavior of SB MOSFETs is analyzed using an extrinsic small-signal equivalent circuit. It is demonstrated that the current drive and the gate transconductance strongly depend on the silicidation anneal temperature, whereas the unity-gain cutoff frequency of the measured devices remains nearly unchanged

    Shapes of Molecular Cloud Cores and the Filamentary Mode of Star Formation

    Using recent dust continuum data, we generate the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of dense, starless molecular cloud cores. Under the hypothesis that the cores are all either oblate or prolate randomly-oriented spheroids, we show that a satisfactory fit to observations can be obtained with a gaussian prolate distribution having a mean intrinsic axis ratio of 0.54. Further, we show that correlations exist between the apparent axis ratio and both the peak intensity and total flux density of emission from the cores, the sign of which again favours the prolate hypothesis. The latter result shows that the mass of a given core depends on its intrinsic ellipticity. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to find the best-fit power law of this dependence. Finally, we show how these results are consistent with an evolutionary scenario leading from filamentary parent clouds to increasingly massive, condensed, and roughly spherical embedded cores.Comment: 16 pages, incl. 11 Postscript figures.     Gonadotropin Concentrations, Follicular Development, and Luteal Function in Pituitary Stalk-transfected Ewes Treated with Bovine Follicular Fluid

    Two experiments, each arranged as a 2 x 2 factorial, were conducted in ewes to examine direct effects of bovine follicular fluid (bFF) on follicular development and luteal function and to further characterize follicular development and luteal function after pituitary stalk transection (SS). In Exp. 1, ewes were sham-operated or SS on d 6 of an estrous cycle and received 5 ml of saline or bFF three times daily on d 5 through 11 of the same cycle. In Exp. 2, all ewes were SS on d 6 of an estrous cycle and treated with saline or bFF three times daily on d 5 through 11 and with ovine FSH (60 micrograms; NIADDK-oFSH-16) or saline (1.2 ml) from d 7 to 11. In Exp. 2, ewes were ovariectomized on d 11 to assess effects of treatments on follicular development and luteal function. In both experiments, concentrations (ng/ml) of FSH on d 7 were suppressed (P less than or equal to .005) by bFF compared with saline (.50 +/- .17 vs 1.63 +/- .15) and remained suppressed (P less than or equal to .005) through d 11 (.46 +/- .12 vs 1.54 +/- .12). Replacement therapy (oFSH) restored concentrations of FSH. Concentrations of LH were not affected by bFF but were elevated (P less than or equal to .05) 1 d after SS (d 7; .88 +/- .09 vs .56 +/- .09) and remained elevated (P less than or equal to .05; 1.31 +/- .20 vs .65 +/- .11) from d 6 through 11.
