Theory of the coplanar-waveguide Penning trap
A novel planar Penning trap is presented, which results from the projection of the well-known three-dimensional cylindrical trap onto the surface of a chip. The introduced trap is also a coplanar-waveguide cavity, similar to those used in circuit quantum electrodynamics experiments with superconducting two-level systems. It opens up the possibility of integrating a single trapped electron, or geonium atom, into quantum circuits. The trap is an elliptical Penning trap, with the magnetic field parallel to the chip's surface. A design procedure is described, which permits the compensation of electric anharmonicities up to sixth order. This should render possible the observation of a single trapped electron and the accurate measurement of its eigenfrequencies, a sine qua non requirement for a useful planar geonium technology

Flux pumping of multiple double-loop superconducting structures for a Planar magnetic field source
We discuss how flux pumping can be applied to multiple inductively coupled superconducting circuits, and describe its importance to the operation of a novel, planar magnetic field source for quantum technology applications. Specifically, we discuss how applying a transformer-rectifier flux pumping technique to several double-loop superconducting structures simultaneously allows for the effect of cross-talk — the inevitable coupling between neighbouring superconducting loops — to be accounted for. Using both a theoretical model and an experimental verification, we introduce a method of calibrating a flux-pumped magnetic field source such that any desired magnetic field distribution within the critical current limits of the used materials can be obtained
Impact of the implementation of electronic guidelines for cardiovascular prevention in primary care: study protocol
Background The electronic medical records software of the Catalan Institute of Health has recently incorporated an electronic version of clinical practice guidelines (e-CPGs). This study aims to assess the impact of the implementation of e-CPGs on the diagnosis, treatment, control and management of hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus type 2 and hypertension. Methods Eligible study participants are those aged 35–74 years assigned to family practitioners (FPs) of the Catalan Institute of Health. Routinely collected data from electronic primary care registries covering 80% of the Catalan population will be analysed using two approaches: (1) a cross-sectional study to describe the characteristics of the sample before e-CPG implementation; (2) a controlled before-and-after study with 1-year follow-up to ascertain the effect of e-CPG implementation. Patients of FPs who regularly use the e-CPGs will constitute the intervention group; the control group will comprise patients assigned to FPs not regularly using the e-CPG. The outcomes are: (1) suspected and confirmed diagnoses, (2) control of clinical variables, (3) requests for tests and (4) proportions of patients with adequate drug prescriptions. Results This protocol should represent a reproducible process to assess the impact of the implementation of e-CPGs. We anticipate reporting results in late 2013.Conclusion This project will assess the effectiveness of e-CPGs to improve clinical decisions and healthcare procedures in the three disorders analysed. The results will shed light on the use of evidence-based medicine to improve clinical practice of FPs

Novel penning traps
Penning traps are used in a wide variety of applications, such as mass spectrometry, high precision measurements of atomic and nuclear properties, antihydrogen production and others. The maturity achieved by Penning trap technology has recently led to several theoretical proposals about the construction of a quantum processor using trapped electrons. Novel scalable surface traps have been conceived of and actually built. However, the observation of a single trapped electron and the accurate measurement of its motional frequencies is still an open experimental challenge. At the University of Sussex a new approach has been introduced: the coplanar-waveguide Penning trap. We describe this trap in detail and discuss how the compensation of electric anharmonicities might allow for the observation of a single electron

Trapped electrons as electrical (quantum) circuits
In this chapter, we present a detailed model of the equivalent electric circuit of a single trapped particle in a coplanar-waveguide (CPW) Penning trap. The CPW-trap, which is essentially a section of coplanar-waveguide transmission-line, is designed to make it compatible with circuit-quantum electrodynamic architectures. This will enable a single trapped electron, or geonium atom, as a potential building block of microwave quantum circuits. The model of the trapped electron as an electric circuit was first introduced by Hans Dehmelt in the 1960s. It is essential for the description of the electronic detection using resonant tank circuits. It is also the basis for the description of the interaction of a geonium atom with other distant quantum systems through electrical (microwave) signals
R&D human resources in firms: What determines the educational level required?
This article analyses the determinants of the demand for R&D employees with different educational levels. The results from the estimations of an ordered logit model show that the main characteristics of the firms that explain the level of education required are university-firm cooperation, R&D intensity and how internal R&D activities are organized.R&D, skills, human resources,
