The chiral and flavour projection of Dirac-Kahler fermions in the geometric discretization
It is shown that an exact chiral symmetry can be described for Dirac-Kahler
fermions using the two complexes of the geometric discretization. This
principle is extended to describe exact flavour projection and it is shown that
this necessitates the introduction of a new operator and two new structures of
complex. To describe simultaneous chiral and flavour projection, eight
complexes are needed in all and it is shown that projection leaves a single
flavour of chiral field on each.Comment: v2: 17 pages, Latex. 5 images eps. Added references, reformatted and

Kinetic and Spectroscopic Analysis of the Catalytic Role of H79 in the Methionine Aminopeptidase from \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e
To gain insight into the role of the strictly conserved histidine residue, H79, in the reaction mechanism of the methionyl aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I), the H79A mutated enzyme was prepared. Co(II)-loaded H79A exhibits an overall \u3e7000-fold decrease in specific activity. The almost complete loss of activity is primarily due to a \u3e6000-fold decrease in kcat. Interestingly, the Km value obtained for Co(II)-loaded H79A was approximately half the value observed for wild-type (WT) EcMetAP-I. Consequently, kcat/Km values decreased only 3000-fold. On the other hand, the observed specific activity of Mn(II)-loaded H79A EcMetAP-I decreased by ∼2.6-fold while kcat decreased by ∼3.5-fold. The observed Km value for Mn(II)-loaded H79A EcMetAP-I was ∼1.4-fold larger than that observed for WT EcMetAP-I, resulting in a kcat/Km value that is lower by ∼3.4-fold. Metal binding, UV−vis, and EPR data indicate that the active site is unperturbed by mutation of H79, as suggested by X-ray crystallographic data. Kinetic isotope data indicate that H79 does not transfer a proton to the newly forming amine since a single proton is transferred in the transition state for both the WT and H79A EcMetAP-I enzymes. Therefore, H79 functions to position the substrate by hydrogen bonding to either the amine group of the peptide linkage or a backbone carbonyl group. Together, these data provide new insight into the catalytic mechanism of EcMetAP-I
Pattern scaling using ClimGen: monthly-resolution future climate scenarios including changes in the variability of precipitation
Development, testing and example applications of the pattern-scaling approach for generating future climate change projections are reported here, with a focus on a particular software application called “ClimGen”. A number of innovations have been implemented, including using exponential and logistic functions of global-mean temperature to represent changes in local precipitation and cloud cover, and interpolation from climate model grids to a finer grid while taking into account land-sea contrasts in the climate change patterns. Of particular significance is a new approach for incorporating changes in the inter-annual variability of monthly precipitation simulated by climate models. This is achieved by diagnosing simulated changes in the shape of the gamma distribution of monthly precipitation totals, applying the pattern-scaling approach to estimate changes in the shape parameter under a future scenario, and then perturbing sequences of observed precipitation anomalies so that their distribution changes according to the projected change in the shape parameter. The approach cannot represent changes to the structure of climate timeseries (e.g. changed autocorrelation or teleconnection patterns) were they to occur, but is shown here to be more successful at representing changes in low precipitation extremes than previous pattern-scaling methods
Kafirin structure and functionality
The structural and functional properties of kafirins are reviewed. Three classes of kafirin: the a, ß and ? forms have been identified at the protein level and one, the d, has been identified only at the gene and transcript levels. All forms show high homology with the equivalent zein proteins. By analogy with the zeins it is believed that the a-kafirins probably have an extended hairpin structure in solution, comprising elements of a-helix, ß-sheet and turns folded back on itself. Kafirins are the most hydrophobic of the prolamins as shown by their solubility, and calculated hydration free energies. The proteins exhibit extensive cross-linking by disulphide bonds and on cooking form indigestible aggregates which are not solubilised by reduction of disulphide bonds. In spite of continuing studies, the reasons for the low digestibility of the protein remain uncertain and there may be several factors involved. Other research has shown that kafirins may have non-food uses and may be used to form films
Joint estimation of gene conversion rates and mean conversion tract lengths from population SNP data
Motivation: Two known types of meiotic recombination are crossovers and gene conversions. Although they leave behind different footprints in the genome, it is a challenging task to tease apart their relative contributions to the observed genetic variation. In particular, for a given population SNP dataset, the joint estimation of the crossover rate, the gene conversion rate and the mean conversion tract length is widely viewed as a very difficult problem
Dependence of paracentric inversion rate on tract length
BACKGROUND: We develop a Bayesian method based on MCMC for estimating the relative rates of pericentric and paracentric inversions from marker data from two species. The method also allows estimation of the distribution of inversion tract lengths. RESULTS: We apply the method to data from Drosophila melanogaster and D. yakuba. We find that pericentric inversions occur at a much lower rate compared to paracentric inversions. The average paracentric inversion tract length is approx. 4.8 Mb with small inversions being more frequent than large inversions. If the two breakpoints defining a paracentric inversion tract are uniformly and independently distributed over chromosome arms there will be more short tract-length inversions than long; we find an even greater preponderance of short tract lengths than this would predict. Thus there appears to be a correlation between the positions of breakpoints which favors shorter tract lengths. CONCLUSION: The method developed in this paper provides the first statistical estimator for estimating the distribution of inversion tract lengths from marker data. Application of this method for a number of data sets may help elucidate the relationship between the length of an inversion and the chance that it will get accepted
Chiral properties of discrete Joyce and Hestenes equations
This paper concerns the question of how chirality is realized for discrete
counterparts of the Dirac-K\"{a}hler equation in the Hestenes and Joyce forms.
It is shown that left and right chiral states for these discrete equations can
be described with the aid of some projectors on a space of discrete forms. The
proposed discrete model admits a chiral symmetry. We construct discrete
analogues of spin operators, describe spin eigenstates for a discrete Joyce
equation, and also discuss chirality.Comment: 14 pages, conference pape
