    The BRST formulation of G/H WZNW models

    We consider a BRST approach to G/H coset WZNW models, {\it i.e.} a formulation in which the coset is defined by a BRST condition. We will give the precise ingrediences needed for this formulation. Then we will prove the equivalence of this approach to the conventional coset formulation by solving the the BRST cohomology. This will reveal a remarkable connection between integrable representations and a class of non-integrable representations for negative levels. The latter representations are also connected to string theories based on non-compact WZNW models. The partition functions of G/H cosets are also considered. The BRST approach enables a covariant construction of these, which does not rely on the decomposition of G as G/HĂ—HG/H\times H. We show that for the well-studied examples of SU(2)kĂ—SU(2)1/SU(2)k+1SU(2)_k \times SU(2)_1/SU(2)_{k+1} and SU(2)k/U(1)SU(2)_k/U(1), we exactly reproduce the previously known results.Comment: 23 pages latex file.     SunDial: embodied informal science education using GPS

    Science centers serve a number of goals for visitors, ideally providing experiences that are educational, social, and meaningful. This paper describes SunDial, a handheld application developed for families to use at a science center. Inspired by the idea of geocaching, the high-tech treasure hunting game that utilizes GPS technologies, SunDial asks families to use a single handheld device to locate and participate in a series of learning modules around the museum. Observations of 10 families suggest that it supports rich informal science education experiences, provides insights about families’ interaction patterns around and with single handheld devices, and demonstrates the value of navigation as an educational experience. Further, using recently released guidelines for Informal Science Education (ISE) experiences to inform the design process proved valuable, tying features of the technology to educational and social goals, and giving evidence that explicit reference to these guidelines can improve ISE experiences and technologies

    Superconformal Coset Equivalence from Level-Rank Duality

    We construct a one-to-one map between the primary fields of the N=2 superconformal Kazama-Suzuki models G(m,n,k) and G(k,n,m) based on complex Grassmannian cosets, using level-rank duality of Wess-Zumino-Witten models.     Before it is too late: professional responsibilities in late-onset Alzheimer's research and pre-symptomatic prediction

    The development of a wide array of molecular and neuroscientific biomarkers can provide the possibility to visualize the course of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) at early stages. Many of these biomarkers are aimed at detecting not only a preclinical, but also a pre-symptomatic state. They are supposed to facilitate clinical trials aiming at treatments that attack the disease at its earliest stage or even prevent it. The increasing number of such biomarkers currently tested and now partly proposed for clinical implementation calls for critical reflection on their aims, social benefits, and risks. This position paper summarizes major challenges and responsibilities. Its focus is on the ethical and social problems involved in the organization and application of dementia research, as well as in healthcare provision from a cross-national point of view. The paper is based on a discussion of leading dementia experts from neuroscience, neurology, social sciences, and bioethics in the United States and Europe. It thus reflects a notable consensus across various disciplines and national backgrounds. We intend to initiate a debate on the need for actions within the researchers’ national and international communities

    3EG J2027+3429 another Blazar behind the Galactic Plane

    We report on the association of an X-ray source (WGA J2025.1+3342), serendipitously found with BeppoSAX in two separate observations, with the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J2027+3429. The source is detected from 1 keV up to about 100 keV, has a flat (0.6-1.5) spectrum and is highly variable both in intensity and shape. The data indicate marginal evidence for an iron line in the source rest frame. The overall X-ray luminosity is 4 10^{45} erg s^{-1} typical of a quasar. The X-ray source is coincident in radio with a bright object characterized by a flat spectrum over the band 0.3-10 GHz while in optical it is identified with a quasar at redshift 0.22. All available data indicate a SED compatible with a low frequency peaked or red blazar type object. This identification is interesting because this is the second blazar found behind the galactic plane in the direction of the Cygnus region.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&
