Design Optimization of a Speed Reducer Using Deterministic Techniques

    Get PDF
The optimal design problem of minimizing the total weight of a speed reducer under constraints is a generalized geometric programming problem. Since the metaheuristic approaches cannot guarantee to find the global optimum of a generalized geometric programming problem, this paper applies an efficient deterministic approach to globally solve speed reducer design problems. The original problem is converted by variable transformations and piecewise linearization techniques. The reformulated problem is a convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem solvable to reach an approximate global solution within an acceptable error. Experiment results from solving a practical speed reducer design problem indicate that this study obtains a better solution comparing with the other existing methods

The effectiveness of different health education strategies in people with pre-diabetes: A randomized controlled trial

Background. People with pre-diabetes often lack knowledge of their risks of developing diabetes. In one of our previous study, Multi-Approach Health Education was shown evidence to be effective on health behavior of reducing risks of developing diabetes. However, which one approach is really effective and efficient need further investigation. Purpose. To examine the effects of different intervention strategies on diabetes prevention knowledge, exercise, dietary behavior, and physiological indicators for people with pre-diabetes. Methods. This was a randomly controlled trial. People who received health examination and were found fasting blood glucose higher than normal, between 100 - 125 mg/dl in 2011 were recruited. Three types of intervention were randomly assigned to 3 groups respectively. The control group (n=51) received a health education lecture. One experimental group (n=48) received the identical lecture plus telephone encouragement. The second experimental group (n=41) received the identical lecture plus a health reminder poster in their daily life. The outcomes were evaluated for the change in knowledge of diabetes prevention, exercise behavior, dietary behavior, and physiological outcomes at 6 and 12 weeks after the lecture of three groups, respectively. Results. Three intervention strategies were equally efficacious at inducing positive behavioral changes but overall the magnitudes of physiological changes were the same. In general, the maximum change in parameters was achieved after 6 weeks and maintained in the second 6 weeks of the study. Conclusions. Educating people with pre-diabetes about their condition can have a positive effect upon their health behaviors. However, education lecture coupled with a telephone follow up or plus educational posters were found no more effective than lecture alone. The lecture alone of health education may be enough for people with pre-diabetes, but the long term effect needs further investigation

Genomic sequence of temperate phage Smp131 of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia that has similar prophages in xanthomonads

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterium previously named as Xanthomonas maltophilia. This organism is an important nosocomial pathogen associated with infections in immunocompromised patients. Clinical isolates of S. maltophilia are mostly resistant to multiple antibiotics and treatment of its infections is becoming problematic. Several virulent bacteriophages, but not temperate phage, of S. maltophilia have been characterized

Ceramic particles reinforced copper matrix composites manufactured by advanced powder metallurgy: Preparation, performance, and mechanisms

    Get PDF
Copper matrix composites doped with ceramic particles are known to effectively enhance the mechanical properties, thermal expansion behavior and high-temperature stability of copper while maintaining high thermal and electrical conductivity. This greatly expands the applications of copper as a functional material in thermal and conductive components, including electronic packaging materials and heat sinks, brushes, integrated circuit lead frames. So far, endeavors have been focusing on how to choose suitable ceramic components and fully exert strengthening effect of ceramic particles in the copper matrix. This article reviews and analyzes the effects of preparation techniques and the characteristics of ceramic particles, including ceramic particle content, size, morphology and interfacial bonding, on the diathermancy, electrical conductivity and mechanical behavior of copper matrix composites. The corresponding models and influencing mechanisms are also elaborated in depth. This review contributes to a deep understanding of the strengthening mechanisms and microstructural regulation of ceramic particle reinforced copper matrix composites. By more precise design and manipulation of composite microstructure, the comprehensive properties could be further improved to meet the growing demands of copper matrix composites in a wide range of application fields

Glycyrrhizin Attenuates Toll Like Receptor-2, -4 and Experimental Vasospasm in a Rat Model

    Get PDF
Upregulated TLRs are observed in the serum of animals following experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage. This study was to examine glycyrrhizin's effect on proinflammatory cytokines and TLRs in SAH rats. Administration with glycyrrhizin was initiated 24 hr before and 1 hr later using osmotic minipump. Basilar arteries were harvested to examine TLRs mRNA and protein (rt-PCR and western blot) and CSF cytokines (rt-PCR). Morphologically, deformed endothelium, tortuous elastic lamina, and smooth muscle necrosis were observed in the SAH rats, but were absent in the glycyrrhizin pretreatment group. The TLR-3 protein level was not increased in SAH animals, compared with the controls, while that of TLR-2 and -4 in the SAH only and SAH plus vehicle groups was significantly elevated ( < 0.01). Pretreatment and treatment with glycyrrhizin reduced TLR-2 and -4 by 28 ± 8% and 33.4±9.2%, respectively. Likewise, glycyrrhizin was able to reduce the IL-1 and MCP-1 mRNA levels. This study shows glycyrrhizin exerts anti-inflammatory effects on SAH induced vasospasm and attenuates the ultrashort time expression of TLRs, like TLR-2 and -4. It corresponds to SAH induced early brain injury. These findings offer credit to the antivasospastic effect of glycyrrhizin and its effect on SAH induced early brain injury

Functional analysis of novel SNPs and mutations in human and mouse genomes

Abstract

Background

With the flood of information generated by the new generation of sequencing technologies, more efficient bioinformatics tools are needed for in-depth impact analysis of novel genomic variations. FANS (Functional Analysis of Novel SNPs) was developed to streamline comprehensive but tedious functional analysis steps into a few clicks and to offer a carefully designed presentation of results so researchers can focus more on thinking instead of typing and calculating.

Results

FANS
harnesses the power of public information databases and powerful tools from six well established websites to enhance the efficiency of analysis of novel variations. FANS can process any point change in any coding region or GT-AG splice site to provide a clear picture of the disease risk of a prioritized variation by classifying splicing and functional alterations into one of nine risk subtypes with five risk levels.

Conclusion

FANS significantly simplifies the analysis operations to a four-step procedure while still covering all major areas of interest to researchers. FANS offers a convenient way to prioritize the variations and select the ones with most functional impact for validation. Additionally, the program offers a distinct improvement in efficiency over manual operations in our benchmark test.</p
