    Vitality and nature in psychiatric spaces: Challenges and prospects for ‘healing architecture’ in the design of inpatient mental health environments

    Historically, nature has been considered central to healing and recovery in institutional mental health settings, with inpatient spaces designed to mirror the restorative forces nature may afford. Within contemporary healthcare architecture, the discourse surrounding nature’s role has once again become prominent, especially in the concept of ‘healing architecture’. While the literature on ‘healing architecture’ primarily considers how to connect recovery to nature through interventions in the built environment, less interest has been directed towards how nature is configured in design processes and what implications that has for the everyday experiences of patients and staff. In this paper we consider the design and implementation of one particular psychiatric hospital in Denmark to show that the ‘nature’ brought into this healthcare space can be experienced as anything but ‘natural’ and may reduce rather than enhance a felt sense of ‘vitality’ amongst patients. Based on our analysis, we end the paper by suggesting four principles for future healthcare design

    Displacement timer pins: An experimental method for measuring the dynamic deformation of explosively loaded plates

    The measurement of dynamic deformation of an explosively loaded plate is an extremely onerous task. Existing techniques such as digital image correlation are expensive and the equipment may be damaged by explosively driven debris/ejecta, particularly if it is necessary to locate such equipment close to loaded elements which are likely to fail. A new, inexpensive and robust measurement technique for use in full-scale blast testing is presented, which involves the placement of displacement timer pins (DTPs) at pre-defined distances from the rear surface of the centre of a plate. A strain gauge on the perimeter of each pin records the time at which the plate comes into contact with the end of each DTP and hence has deformed to that value of displacement, giving a direct measure of the time-varying deformation at a discrete point on the plate. An experimental proof-of-concept was conducted and the results are compared with numerical displacements determined using LS-DYNA. The numerical and experimental results were in very good agreement, which suggests that the proposed experimental method offers a valuable means for determining the full-scale response of structures subjected to blast loads in aggressive environments.     Voices emerging from the shadows : Radiologic practitioners’ experiences of challenging conversations

    Objective Traditionally, radiologists have practiced their profession behind the scenes. Today, radiologic practitioners face mounting expectations to communicate more directly with patients. However, their experiences with patient communication are not well understood. The aim of this study was to describe the challenges of radiologic practitioners when communicating with patients. Methods Twelve day-long interprofessional communication skills workshops for radiologic clinicians were held at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital. Prior to each workshop, participants were asked to write narratives describing experiences with difficult radiologic conversations that they found particularly challenging or satisfying. The narratives were transcribed and analyzed through thematic content analysis by two researchers. Results Radiologists, radiology trainees, technologists, nurses, and medical interpreters completed 92 narratives. The most challenging aspects of healthcare conversations included: Conveying Serious News (n = 44/92; 48%); Expanded Scope of Radiologic Practice (n = 37/92; 40%); Inexperience and Gaps in Education (n = 15/92; 16%); Clinical Uncertainty (n = 14/92; 15%); and Interprofessional Teamwork (n = 9/92; 10%). Conclusion Radiologic clinicians face substantial communicative challenges focused on conveying serious, unexpected and uncertain diagnoses amid practical challenges and limited educational opportunities. Practice implications Innovative educational curricula that address these challenges may enhance radiologic practitioners\u2019 success in adopting patient-centered communication

    Aligning archive maps and extracting footprints for analysis of historic urban environments.

    Archive cartography and archaeologist's sketches are invaluable resources when analysing a historic town or city. A virtual reconstruction of a city provides the user with the ability to navigate and explore an environment which no longer exists to obtain better insight into its design and purpose. However, the process of reconstructing the city from maps depicting features such as building footprints and roads can be labour intensive. In this paper we present techniques to aid in the semi-automatic extraction of building footprints from digital images of archive maps and sketches. Archive maps often exhibit problems in the form of inaccuracies and inconsistencies in scale which can lead to incorrect reconstructions. By aligning archive maps to accurate modern vector data one may reduce these problems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the footprint extraction methods may be improved by aligning either modern vector data or previously extracted footprints, since common elements can be identified between maps of differing time periods and only the difference between the two needs to be extracted. An evaluation of two alignment approaches is presented: using a linear affine transformation and a set of piecewise linear affine transformations
