Technical Epistemologies: On the medical reception of Hellenistic philosophy
This thesis examines the transposition of Hellenistic philosophy into the medical sphere, with a focus on the Stoic, Epicurean and Pyrrhonian traditions. The intersection of Hellenistic philosophy and medicine is especially abundant; the Hellenistic philosopher, with his eudaimonic orientation, presents himself as a physician of the soul. The τέλος of the medical art – the production and maintenance of health – served as a practical template for the philosopher’s administrations. As the Hellenistic period fades into the centuries of Roman hegemony, Stoic and Epicurean doctrines find their way into the medical tradition per se via the theories of Athenaeus of Attalia and Asclepiades of Bithynia respectively. However, despite the oft-stated affinity of philosophical and medical objectives, Stoicism and Epicureanism are refashioned as they cross disciplinary boundaries – in the case of Epicureanism, radically so. My thesis is that these adjustments are most intelligibly read as attempts by doctors to signify the capacity of their τέχνη to generate new ideas by disentangling their theories from the philosophies to which they were intellectually indebted. The method by which this is achieved, I will argue, is in large part dependent on the nature of the philosophy at root, the ‘mother-doctrine’. Athenaeus was able, through selective adoption, to delineate a technical epistemology within the greater architecture of Stoic theory; Asclepiades, by contrast, was motivated to adapt the physical system he sought to appropriate. The Pyrrhonists, who interface with the medical sphere via their affiliation with the Empiricist sect in the second century AD, represent an alternative mode of interaction between the philosophical and medical traditions – the alliance of independent, differently oriented sects, the integrity of which, I will propose, depends upon the preservation of that independence. The Pyrrhonian Empiricists grant us further insight into the boundary between philosophy and τέχνη as disciplines in antiquity, a boundary which is also central to understanding the medical adoption/adaptation of Stoicism and Epicureanism
Probing viscoelastic properties of a thin polymer film sheared between a beads layer and quartz crystal resonator
We report measurements of viscoelastic properties of thin polymer films of
10-100 nm at the MHz range. These thin films are confined between a quartz
crystal resonator and a millimetric bead layer, producing an increase of both
resonance frequency and dissipation of the quartz resonator. The shear modulus
and dynamic viscosity of thin films extracted from these measurements are
consistent with the bulk values of the polymer. This modified quartz resonator
provides an easily realizable and effective tool for probing the rheological
properties of thin films at ambient environment.Comment: submitted to ap
Micromechanical microphone using sideband modulation of nonlinear resonators
We report the successful detection of an audio signal via sideband modulation
of a nonlinear piezoelectric micromechanical resonator. The
27096-m resonator was shown to be reliable in audio detection for
sound intensity levels as low as ambient room noise and to have an unamplified
sensitivity of 23.9 V/Pa. Such an approach may be adapted in acoustic
sensors and microphones for consumer electronics or medical equipment such as
hearing aids.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Investigation of Polymer–Plasticizer Blends as SH-SAW Sensor Coatings for Detection of Benzene in Water with High Sensitivity and Long-Term Stability
We report the first-ever direct detection of benzene in water at concentrations below 100 ppb (parts per billion) using acoustic wave (specifically, shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave, SH-SAW) sensors with plasticized polymer coatings. Two polymers and two plasticizers were studied as materials for sensor coatings. For each polymer–plasticizer combination, the influence of the mixing ratio of the blend on the sensitivity to benzene was measured and compared to commercially available polymers that were used for BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) detection in previous work. After optimizing the coating parameters, the highest sensitivity and lowest detection limit for benzene were found for a 1.25 μm thick sensor coating of 17.5%-by-weight diisooctyl azelate-polystyrene on the tested acoustic wave device. The calculated detection limit was 45 ppb, with actual sensor responses to concentrations down to 65 ppb measured directly. Among the sensor coatings that showed good sensitivity to benzene, the best long-term stability was found for a 1.0 μm thick coating of 23% diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate-polystyrene, which was studied here because it is known to show no detectable leaching in water. The present work demonstrates that, by varying type of plasticizer, mixing ratio, and coating thickness, the mechanical and chemical properties of the coatings can be conveniently tailored to maximize analyte sorption and partial chemical selectivity for a given class of analytes as well as to minimize acoustic-wave attenuation in contact with an aqueous phase at the operating frequency of the sensor device
Further implications of the Bessis-Moussa-Villani conjecture
We find further implications of the BMV conjecture, which states that for
hermitian matrices A and B, the function Tr exp(A - t B) is the Laplace
transform of a positive measure.Comment: LaTeX, 8 page
The coagulopathy of liver disease: a shift in thinking
The coagulopathy of chronic liver disease causes derangement of the results of traditional laboratory tests. As such, there is an expectation that when undergoing invasive procedures patients with cirrhosis are at increased risk of bleeding. Standard practice is to optimise laboratory values with prophylactic transfusions of platelets, plasma and fibrinogen to reduce perceived bleeding risk. There has been a shift in thinking regarding coagulation in patients with chronic liver disease, whereby a rebalancing of haemostasis occurs with reduction in both procoagulants and anticoagulants. Guidelines for the preprocedural management of patients with chronic liver disease are inconsistent and may not account for this new paradigm. The risk of prophylactic transfusion should be measured against the risk of bleeding while considering the rebalancing of haemostasis. Future management may be guided by whole blood viscoelastic tests or use of thrombopoietin receptor agonists to optimise patients in these scenarios. </jats:p
Gas loading of graphene-quartz surface acoustic wave devices
Copyright © 2013 AIP PublishingGraphene was transferred to the propagation path of quartz surface acoustic wave devices and the attenuation due to gas loading of air and argon measured at 70 MHz and 210 MHz and compared to devices with no graphene. Under argon loading, there was no significant difference between the graphene and non-graphene device and the values of measured attenuation agree well with those calculated theoretically. Under air loading, at 210 MHz, there was a significant difference between the non-graphene and graphene devices, with the average value of attenuation obtained with the graphene devices being approximately twice that obtained from the bare quartz devices.Royal Societ
Rumah Gadang menunjukkan unsur penting pembentuk budaya Minangkabau
bercerminkan kepada apa yang ada di alam. Salah satu ukiran pada rumah gadang
yaitu kaluak paku.
