Synthesis and characterization of Co(II) and Ni(n) complexes of 2-substituted benzimidazoles

Abstract

463-465Thiocyanates of cobalt(ll) and nickel(ll) react with 2-alkyl substituted benzimidazoles to give complexes of the type M(NCS)2(R-BzlH)2 (where M = Co or Ni; R = Et, n-Pr, i-Pr or n-Bu). Perchlorates of the above metals also react with benzimidazole and its derivatives to yield Ni(i-PrBzIH)2)(CIO4)2, M(R-BzIH)3(CIO4)2 (where M = Co or Ni, R = H or Et; M = Co, R = i-Pr) and M(RBzlH)4 (CIO4)2 (where M = Co or Ni, R = Me or n-Pr; M = Ni, R = n-Bu). On the basis of elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, magnetic moments, infrared and electronic spectral studies, the cobalt complexes have been assigned a distorted tetrahedral stereochemistry and the nickel complexes, a square-planar geometry. Thermal studies of a few thiocyanate complexes have also been carried out
