Increasing globalization, decentralization, and networking among companies have created a basis for virtual teamwork. Virtual teams are teams who work decentralized and communicate primarily through online communication tools such as videoconferencing, e-mails and instant messenger. In this context, virtual teams are characterized by factors such as geographical dispersion, different time zones and work practices, cultural diversity, and innovative organizational structures. In order that the virtual team achieves its current work goals, an effective leadership- and communication style has to be provided. Therefore, the researcher examined the consecutive factors of authentic leadership and information and communication management. Using a theoretical framework, the researcher determined the potential relationships between team virtuality, authentic leadership, information and communication management and the outcomes, employee trust, and virtual team effectiveness. Data to support the hypotheses were collected via an online questionnaire from 102 respondents who already worked or are currently working in virtual teams. The results confirm that the combination of authentic leadership with information and communication management leads to effective trust relationships among the virtual team members as well as effective team performances. Implications for future research and managerial practices are discussed
