 23CONSERVATION SCIENCE IN CULTURAL HERITAGEEDITORIAL Cultural identity: an osmosis but also a distinction between identical and diverseSalvatore Lorusso Conservation chemistMauro Mantovani PhilosopherIdentity can be defined as the qualification of a person, a place, an object based on a set of characteristics that determines its specificity, differentiating it from all others and thus enabling its identification. Besides, philosophically, identity – consider Aristo-tle – is one of the fundamental principles, both from an ontological and logical point of view, and its correlation with the principle of non-contradiction is a guarantee not only for any type of discussion and discourse that wishes to be truly such (i.e. a guarantee), but also to protect the dignity of each reality which – in some way – it represents. This is due to the infinite originality of each reality, whatever it may be.Thomas Aquinas, reflecting on the transcendental of being, as presented in Article 1 of Quaestio 1 of the De Veritate, observes that every being, understood as entity (id quod est), can be considered, first of all, in himself. In this way, it can be acknowledged as something that is, and as an indivisum, a unum therefore, endowed with a character of inalienable and positive unitary wholeness. From this, therefore, comes the original basis of identity.The being, however, can also be considered in relation to something else: from this point of view, it is seen as a quid aliud, an aliquid, something inherently different. From here comes the original basis of alterity and diversity and for this reason the need to go beyond any equivocal and univocal perspective in one’s approach to reality.If we come directly to the themes of identity and cultural diversity, a number of spe-cific questions undoubtedly arise that open up a wider field for further reflection.Is identity something immutable? Is it something material or immaterial? Or is it the result of dynamic evolution in which “the same” continues to persist in “‘the other”? How can the “old” and the “new” be integrated without altering the cultural identity of a people, a nation, as well as that of a single person?If we apply these questions to the identity of any living being, their gradual meta-morphosis does not stop them from always being the same: despite inevitable trans-formations (the infant, the child, the adult, the elder), a person is always perceived as being the “same”. They remain themselves even though they grow up and evolve. In this case, development shows an evolution marked by accidental mutations and not a substantial change. On the other hand, it is also true that the historical, contextual and relational dimensions in which the person is undeniably inserted, strongly contribute to moulding them, to giving them a new “form”, showing them not only as something that is, but as a reality that is and that “one makes”.24 S. Mantovani - EditorialEthical thought that is attentive to the profound meaning of action, in compliance with a law that exists both inside and outside the being, confirms this almost “meta-physical” plasticity of human action and relationships for us. It highlights the fact that we ourselves enter into almost symbiotic connection with what (people, environment and property) moves our affections, desires, thoughts, relationships.Absolutizing, therefore, never helps to understand: identity is not something stat-ic or uncontaminated, as some proponents of identitary purity would like and are against any form of change and / or contamination with the “other”, but a complex set of mutations and permanence, a continuous osmosis between the identical and the diverse.Applied to cultural heritage, this concept of identity justifies Cesare Brandi’s theory of respecting the patina of time, the work of art, in that, far from modifying the work’s identity, it testifies to the changes that have taken place over time, despite essentially remaining faithful to itself: a reflection of life in its historical and evolutionary path. It is into this more general framework that a consideration on the concept of “beauty” fits, and is seen as the most precious legacy that our history has left us.It is well known that no country in the world is so full of artistic treasures, cities and squares as Italy – though alas, it is also threatened by earthquakes – which represent a wealth of beauty, of artisan traditions that are able to produce wonders, of sun, sea and mountains. This positive image of our country can be traced to a distinct feature that characterizes it, to beauty: where else can our demand for identity be satisfied? But this is not enough, especially in a time such as the present where, in a world that has shrunk in size, in other words, has become global, there must be something more to offer: a reason to be different. It is beauty itself that can represent this distinctive feature.However, it is not to be considered merely and solely as offer and availability. Beau-ty, in fact, can only become a resource in a society that does not enclose itself in restrictive standards, is able to escape rigid and repetitive patterns and go beyond the dull particular and the occasional happening.A society, consequently, that knows how to see growth as a process that invests in all the dimensions of an individual, including their changes and evolution, following the path of beauty with an idea of integral growth and does not neutralize the more creative human dimensions, but sees them as part of a multidimensional idea of value. In this perspective education becomes truly “vital”, particularly in the education of values and beauty. Giving life to and nourishing a model of growth that is not repetition and stand-ardization, but the continuous widespread creation and generation of cultural identity that achieves interpenetration, exchange, mutual influence.And in this context – especially after the event of emergency situations related to the recent earthquakes – alongside the necessary initiatives related to people’s health and accommodation, the reconstruction of the houses and the restart of economic ac-tivities, there is also an urgent need to set up and establish a “Civil Protection” for our artistic heritage to protect them from degradation.In this way, their beauty will be well guarded, preserved, promoted, enhanced and transmitted, as an authentic bonum commune, to future generations. Hence, a civil commitment, so that our culture does not die, that the beauty we have received is not destroyed. If it is the task of the “technicians”, particularly in these situations, to pay special attention to artistic heritage that is ‘at risk’, including the provision of more  25CONSERVATION SCIENCE IN CULTURAL HERITAGEstreamlined and less bureaucratic procedures and regulations, it is everyone’s respon-sibility to promote, not only when there are emergencies, a “culture of beauty”.Obviously, here we are referring especially to what genetically or naturally exists (the person, the location, the environmental object), including what is anthropically conceived and realized (the artifact of historic-artistic interest) or to what, as previously indicated, is subject to change and / or modification, and definitely not to inertia, much less degradation.In witnessing this process, we can thus find satisfaction and reason for our exist-ence and acceptance in our request for cultural identity as a fusion of the identical and the diverse. It is true that a clear distinction, though problematic, is that between the authentic and the diverse, understood as being reproduced, in the case of a work of art. In fact, among the various terms that distinguish the origin of a work of art when speaking of its attribution (authentic, original, replica, copy, attributed to, signed by, school, follower, fake), one finds the term “reproduced”, that is, a work produced by means of digital reconstruction and reproduction: one acknowledged example is the oil painting on canvas, “The Wedding at Cana” by Paolo Veronese, reproduced in 2007, clearly representing something totally “new”, but later followed by other works similarly reproduced over the years.Thus, through computerization it is possible to obtain a work that is identical to the original, in which shape, color, and even “materiality” are identical, and consequently, very difficult to distinguish, in the case of both a subjective evaluation (historical, artis-tic, aesthetic, stylistic, iconographic analyses) and an objective evaluation (through the use of diagnostic and analytical technologies).At this point a number questions arise that are ethical rather than aesthetic: – where is the principle of unicum?– where is its unrepeatability?– where is its cultural identity?– where is its inevitable market price?The computerized reproduction of a masterpiece might be judged lawful, as long as what it is, is clearly indicated.The easiest way to respond to these objections might be to rely on a serious and scientifically complete analysis, to be integrated with the above-mentioned evalua-tions. However, as has been previously pointed out, the question has remained unre-solved by the experts, giving rise to an aspect that seen in a broader vision, refers to dimensions and limits ranging from real to virtual. Virtuality and reality: two dimensions that are in contrast, two worlds which can, however, explain something about each other and open themselves to multiple interpretations.If we talk about virtuality, our first thought is of the Internet, whose contents are able to influence and to question the choices we make in our real everyday life, because the virtual dimension of the network and its power can influence our tastes.According to some, the influence of the media – in particular social networks – in our lives, makes it difficult for us to understand what it is we really like: the desirable object can become a tedious cliche in a very short time. And, in conclusion, how do we keep in mind that the world of the media also puts before us a problem of authenticity and, therefore, the inability to distinguish the genuine from the reproduction?Yet, as Pope Francis wrote in his Encyclical of 2015 in N.103, dedicated – as is known – to the “care of our common home”, the Laudatosi’: «Technoscience, when well directed, can produce important means of improving the quality of human life, from 26 S. It can also produce art and enable men and women immersed in the material world to “leap” into the world of beauty. Who can deny the beauty of an aircraft or a skyscraper? Valuable works of art and music now make use of new technologies. So, in the beauty intended by the one who uses new technical instruments and in the contemplation of such beauty, a quantum leap occurs, resulting in a fulfillment which is uniquely human».

 27CONSERVATION SCIENCE IN CULTURAL HERITAGEEditoriale L’identità culturale: una osmosi ma anche un distinguo fra identico e diversoSalvatore LorussoChimico conservatoreMauro MantovaniFilosofoL’identità la si può definire come la qualificazione di una persona, di un luogo, di un oggetto sulla base di un insieme di caratteri che ne determinano la specificità, distinguendoli da tutti gli altri e rendendone possibile il riconoscimento. Filosoficamente, peraltro, l’identità costituisce – si pensi ad Aristotele – uno dei principi fondamentali, sia dal punto di vista ontologico sia da quello logico, e la sua correlazione con il principio di non-contraddizione diventa garanzia non solo per ogni tipo di confronto e di discorso che voglia essere veramente tale, ma anche per la stessa tutela della dignità di ogni realtà che – in qualche modo – è. Ciò, proprio per l’inesauribile originalità di ogni realtà, qualunque essa sia. Tommaso d’Aquino, con la sua riflessione sui trascendentali dell’essere, così come ci viene presentata nell’articolo 1 della quaestio 1 del De Veritate, rileva che ogni essere, assunto nel suo significato di ente (id quod est), può essere considerato anzitutto in se stesso. In tal modo viene colto come qualcosa che è e come un indivisum, un unum dotato dunque del carattere di inalienabile e positiva unitarietà. Di qui dunque il fondamento originario dell’identità. L’ente, tuttavia, può essere considerato anche in rapporto ad altro: da tale punto di vista, si rivela un quid aliud, un aliquid, qualcosa di intrinsecamente distinto. Di qui il fondamento originario dell’alterità e della diversità e la necessità di superare per questo ogni prospettiva equivocista e univocista di approccio al reale.Se veniamo direttamente al tema dell’identità e della diversità culturale, si pongono senz’altro vari interrogativi specifici, che aprono un vasto campo di ulteriori riflessioni. L’identità è qualcosa di immutabile? È qualcosa di materiale o di immateriale? Oppure è frutto di una dinamica evoluzione in cui “lo stesso” continua a persistere nell’ “altro”? In che maniera il “vecchio” e il “nuovo” si integrano senza alterare l’identità culturale di un popolo, di una nazione, oltre che di una singola persona? Se applichiamo questi interrogativi all’identità di un qualsiasi essere vivente, la progressiva metamorfosi non gli impedisce di restare sempre lo stesso: malgrado le inevitabili trasformazioni (il neonato, il bimbo, l’adulto, il vecchio), la persona viene percepita sempre la “stessa”. Si rimane sé stessi pur crescendo ed evolvendo. In questo caso, lo sviluppo mostra un divenire contrassegnato da mutazioni accidentali e non da un cambio sostanziale. D’altra parte è vero che le dimensioni storica, contestuale e relazionale, nelle quali la persona è innegabilmente inserita, contribuiscono fortemente a plasmarla, a darle nuova “forma”, a mostrarla non soltanto come un qualcosa che è, ma come una realtà che è e “si fa”. Una riflessione etica attenta al significato profondo dell’agire, in conformità ad una legge sia interiore all’essere sia esterna, ci conferma questa plasticità quasi “metafisica” dell’azione e della relazionalità umana. Questo mette in luce il fatto che noi stessi entriamo in connessione quasi simbiotica con ciò (persone, ambiente e cose) che muove i nostri affetti, desideri, pensieri, relazioni. Assolutizzare dunque non aiuta mai a capire: l’identità non è qualcosa di statico o di incontaminato, come vorrebbero alcuni fautori della purezza identitaria, contrari ad ogni forma di cambiamento e/o contaminazione con l’ “altro”, ma è un complesso insieme di mutazioni e permanenze, di continue osmosi fra l’identico e il diverso.Applicato al bene culturale, questo concetto di identità giustifica la teoria brandiana del rispetto della patina del tempo sull’opera d’arte, in quanto essa, lungi dal modificare l’identità dell’opera, ne testimonia i cambiamenti nel corso del tempo pur nella sostanziale fedeltà a sé stessa: specchio della vita nel suo fluire storico ed evolutivo. È in questo quadro più generale che va inquadrata una riflessione sul concetto di “bellezza”, quale eredità più preziosa che la nostra storia ci ha consegnato.È ben noto che nessun Paese al mondo è così ricco di tesori artistici, di città e piazze – pur minacciati ahimé anche dagli eventi sismici –che sono veri e propri scrigni di bellezza, di tradizioni artigiane capaci di realizzare meraviglie, di sole, di mare e di montagne. Una immagine positiva del nostro Paese, quindi, è da ricondurre ad un tratto distintivo che lo caratterizza ovvero alla bellezza: dove 28 S. Lorusso, M. Mantovani - Editorialaltro può trovare soddisfazione la nostra domanda di identità? Però ciò non basta, soprattutto in una epoca come quella attuale, in cui, in un mondo che si è fatto piccolo ovvero globale, occorre avere qualcosa in più da offrire: una ragione di distinzione. Proprio la bellezza può rappresentare tale tratto distintivo. Essa, tuttavia, non è da considerare semplicemente e unicamente offerta e disponibile. La bellezza, infatti, può diventare risorsa soltanto in una società capace di non rinchiudersi in standard ristretti, di sfuggire a schemi rigidi e ripetitivi, di andare al di là del particolare ottuso e dell’episodico occasionale. Una società, quindi, che sa pensare la crescita come un processo che investe in   tutte le dimensioni dell’umano con i suoi cambiamenti e con la sua evoluzione, percorrendo la strada della bellezza con una idea di crescita integrale e che non elide le dimensioni umane più creative, ma le consideri nel quadro di una idea pluridimensionale di valore. In questa prospettiva diventa davvero “vitale” l’educazione, e in particolare l’educazione al valore e al bello. Alimentare e dare vita, quindi, ad un modello di crescita che non è ripetizione e standardizzazione, ma creazione e generazione continua e diffusa di quella identità culturale che realizza una compenetrazione, uno scambio, una influenza reciproca.Ed in questo contesto – specie avendo davanti a noi le situazioni particolari di emergenza legate ai recenti fenomeni sismici – accanto alle iniziative necessarie legate alla salute e alla sistemazione delle persone, alla ricostruzione delle case e al riavvio delle attività economiche, sarebbe urgente istituire e dare stabilità anche ad una “protezione civile” per i nostri beni artistici per evitare che siano soggetti al degrado. La loro bellezza verrà così custodita, preservata, promossa, valorizzata e trasmessa come autentico bonum commune alle future generazioni. Un impegno civile, quindi, perché non muoia la nostra cultura, non si estingua la bellezza che ci è stata consegnata. Se ai “tecnici” spetta senz’altro, specie in questi frangenti, dedicare un’attenzione speciale proprio ai beni artistici “a rischio”, anche prevedendo procedure e normative più snelle e meno burocraticamente ingessate, è compito di tutti promuovere, e non solo in momenti di particolare emergenza, una “cultura della bellezza”.Ovviamente qui ci si riferisce soprattutto sia a quanto geneticamente o naturalmente esistente (la persona, il luogo, il bene ambientale), sia a quanto antropicamente concepito e realizzato (il manufatto di interesse storico-artistico) ovvero a quanto, come precedentemente indicato, è oggetto di trasformazione e/o modificazione, non certo di inerzia e tanto meno di degrado. La testimonianza di tale processo può trovare così soddisfazione e motivo di esistenza e accettazione nella nostra domanda di identità culturale come fusione di identico e diverso. È pur vero che un distinguo netto ancorchè problematico è quello fra l’autentico e il diverso, inteso come riprodotto, nel caso di un’opera d’arte. Infatti, fra i diversi termini che contraddistinguono l’origine di un’opera d’arte nell’ambito della sua attribuzione (autentico, originale, replica, copia, attribuito a, firma di, scuola di, seguace , falso), per quanto qui compete, vi è anche il “riprodotto”ovvero l’opera realizzata mediante la ricostruzione e la riproduzione digitale: ne è un esempio ben acclarato il dipinto ad olio su tela “Le nozze di Cana” di  Paolo  Veronese, realizzato  nel  2007, che  rappresenta  decisamente  qualcosa di totalmente “nuovo”, ma che ha già avuto seguito con altre opere riprodotte nel corso degli anni. Così, attraverso la computerizzazione è possibile ottenere un’opera identica all’originale, nella quale forma, colori e, persino, “matericità” degli stessi sono identici e, pertanto, molto difficilmente distinguibili a seguito di una valutazione sia soggettiva (mediante analisi di carattere storico, artistico, estetico, stilistico, iconografico), sia oggettiva  (mediante l’impiego di tecnologie diagnostico-analitiche). A questo punto si pongono alcuni quesiti di ordine più etico che estetico:– dove è finito il principio dell’unicum?   – dove la sua irripetibilità?    – dove la sua identità culturale?– dove la sua immancabile quotazione mercantile?Si potrebbe nel caso giudicare lecita la riproduzione computerizzata di un capolavoro purchè sia indicato chiaramente di che si tratta. Il modo più semplice per rispondere a queste obiezioni potrebbe essere quello di affidarsi ad una analisi seria e scientificamente completa nell’ambito di una integrazione delle suddette valutazioni, ma, come si è sottolineato in precedenza, ciò risulta tuttora insoluto da parte degli esperti, dando luogo all’aspetto che ne deriva di conseguenza e che si riferisce, in una visione più lata, a dimensioni e limiti fra reale e virtuale. Virtualità e realtà: due dimensioni che si contrastano, due mondi che tuttavia possono spiegare qualcosa l’uno dell’altro e aprirsi a molteplici interpretazioni. 29CONSERVATION SCIENCE IN CULTURAL HERITAGESe si discute di virtualità, il primo pensiero ci porta a internet, i cui contenuti sono in grado di influenzare e mettere in discussione le scelte che compiamo nella vita reale di tutti i giorni, poiché la dimensione virtuale della rete e del potere può influenzare i nostri gusti. Secondo alcuni, l’influenza dei media – in particolare i social network – nelle nostre vite rende difficile capire che cosa ci piace veramente: l’oggetto desiderabile può diventare un noioso clichè in un intervallo brevissimo di tempo. E, concludendo, come non far presente che il mondo dei media ci pone inoltre di fronte ad un problema di autenticità e, quindi, all’impossibilità di distinguere il vero dal riprodotto?Eppure, come scrive papa Francesco al n. 103 dell’Enciclica del 2015 dedicata – com’è noto – alla “cura della casa comune”, la Laudatosi’: «La tecnoscienza, ben orientata, è in grado non solo di produrre cose realmente preziose per migliorare la qualità della vita dell’essere umano, a partire dagli oggetti di uso domestico fino ai grandi mezzi di trasporto, ai ponti, agli edifici, agli spazi pubblici. È anche capace di produrre il bello e di far compiere all’essere umano, immerso nel mondo materiale, il ‘salto’ nell’ambito della bellezza. Si può negare la bellezza di un aereo, o di alcuni grattacieli? Vi sono preziose opere pittoriche e musicali ottenute mediante il ricorso ai nuovi strumenti tecnici. In tal modo, nel desiderio di bellezza dell’artefice e in chi quella bellezza contempla si compie il salto verso una certa pienezza propriamente umana».
