These are awarded annually from the SDState Graduate School. Theyreceived 22 applications for two available awards, and students from theCollege of Natural Sciences received both of them this year. Tahmina is earning her PhD in Microbiology under the advisement of Dr.Nicholas Butzin, and Xiaoman is earning her PhD in Remote SensingGeography under the advisement of  Dr. Xiaoyang Zhang.   William S. Wadsworth Jr. and Nancy Wadsworth Research Endowment Award: Dr. Adam Hoppe,Chemistry & BiochemistryThis award recognizes outstanding researchers in the College of Natural Sciences who have made significantcontributions to their field of study by publishing work in highly ranked journals of their discipline. This endowedaward comes from the generosity of the two donors: William S. Wadsworth Jr. and Nancy Wadsworth, who havedesignated a portion of their estate for the benefit of the College of Natural Sciences at South Dakota StateUniversity. Dr. Hoppe will receive $2,000 from the endowment fund to support ongoing research activities.Shamiq Aftab won 2nd place in a poster presentation competition at the NA PRRS Symposium in Chicago! Thecategory was virus-host interactions. Shamiq is earning his PhD in Microbiology under the advisement of Dr. Xiuqing Wang.College of Natural Sciences 2021 Annual Awards Natural Sciences Teacher of the Year: Andrew Ellis, Biology & MicrobiologyThis award recognizes the teaching excellence within the College by identifying a faculty member who exhibitsstudent-centered characteristics, uses methods of instruction representing the best practices of instruction, anddemonstrates excellence through the achievements of students. Andy will receive a $500 award andcommemorative plaque. Natural Sciences Researcher of the Year: Dr. Jaime Lopez, Biology & MicrobiologyThe College of Natural Sciences Outstanding Researcher Award recognizes and celebrates exceptional researchin the college. Jaime will be recognized during the University's 2022 Celebration of Faculty Excellence, alongwith the other colleges’ outstanding researchers, scholars, performers, and artists.Allison Bjornstad received the Fall 2021 Faculty Early Alert Award for Excellence! Each semester, up to threefaculty members are awarded by the Wintrode Student Success and Opportunity Center for outstandingperformance in the program. Allison, a recent Natural Sciences graduate, is currently a temporary faculty memberfor the Department of Biology & Microbiology. "Bringing science to life for students is so important! I love inviting SDSU faculty down to present to my studentsso they can see how exciting science really is and what’s to come in their future education, if they so choose it. It’salso great for them to meet current college students who are seeking out science education as a career. Thefaculty always do a wonderful job with student engagement – the level is incredibly high and student continue totalk about what they saw the rest of the school year!"-Kellie Steinmetz, 8th grade science teacher at Harrisburg North Middle School and '03 SDState Biology alumniOutreach in Harrisburg, SD       Dr. Larry Browning, Department of Physics, and Dr. Matt Miller, Departmentof Chemistry & Biochemistry, visited Harrisburg North Middle School earliermonth. Undergraduate students Zach Douglas, Chemistry Education major,Justin Hoogestraat, Computer Science and Biochemistry double major, andCarter Koons, Chemistry Education, joined Browning and Miller for the January21st outreach trip.        "My favorite part of the experience was when we did demos and seeingthe faces of the students light up in excitement. It kind of feels like it couldbe the same as if someone in a fantasy world was seeing magic happen right infront of their eyes," Douglas said.Above:  Dr. Browning and ZachDouglas prep liquid nitrogen."Teaching may sound really difficultto start out, but when you get intothe classroom full of kids and theenvironment is just right, you willhave the time of your life seeing asthey understand more and moreinformation that you are throwingat them," Douglas said. "It was a great time towatch the kids jump as Dr. Millerand Dr. Browning exploded manythings in front of them."      "I think seeing the kid’s reactions is the best. A genuine interest in whatyou’re doing is just an insane motivational boost," Hoogestraat said. He usedskills from his second major outsidethe College, Computer Science, tocreate a simulator app.  It shows adensity column with different layersthat a user can "drop" objects into. Hoogestraat'sinterdisciplinary demo is a greatexample of how technology canenhance science teaching at all levels.Geography Alumni Named Among'Highly Cited Researchers'       Dr. Thomas (Tom) Loveland, pictured right, has beencalled "one of the world's leading land cover and land coverchange experts", per USGS. He was recently recognized onClarivate's 2021 Highly Cited Researchers list, which namesindividuals whose publications "rank in the top 1% bycitations for field and publication year in the Web of Sciencecitation index".       Loveland's journey into remote-sensing began at SDStateunder the influence of Dr. Ed Hogan. He earned his B.S. inGeography (1974) and his M.S. in Geography (1976) from Hogan's newly-established Department of Geography. Loveland went on to a 38-year career atEROS and helped approximately 70 other SDSU Geography alumni begin theirown remote-sensing careers at EROS. Notably, his leadership of the Landsatteam at EROS helped make Landsat data freely available to the world in 2008.       Over the years Loveland has received many other commendable awardsincluding the Distinguished Service Award (the Department of Interior’shighest honor), the Mendenhall Award from the U.S. Geological Survey, theAlan Scott Award from the American Society of Photogrammetry and RemoteSensing, and induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. The Geography major wasestablished in 1967, the year Hogan became faculty at SDState, and became astandalone department in 1973, with Hogan as the Head. Hogan's advising andpassion for the field impacted countless students through the years, includingLoren Hill and James Rapp. They kicked off the Geography Convention in 1969and thanks to the dedication of numerous students throughout the years, it isnow the longest-running student-organized convention in the nation!
