A determination and analysis of preservation values for protected areas.

The premise upon which this thesis rests is that recreationists in protected areas place a value on such areas which is higher than the price they are presently paying to use them. The aim of the thesis is twofold, first to demonstrate how the value of natural resources can be quantified and the results made rigorous enough to be included in the arithmetic of decision making. The contingent valuation technique is applied in order to value protected area consumption at selected Natal Parks Board protected areas.
